A REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION! (WITH NO SILLY ANSWERS PLEASE!)
No the laws are set at national level, but are policed by regional forces... Each town has a mayor... they normally lead the regional councils, but don't have any political power as such. Councils set things such as local taxes and amenities. Councils are elected locally. The National voting system is set according to parliamentary districts. There are 600+ in England/Scotland/Wales/NorthernIreland. The person with the highest votes in each district is elected to parliament. The government is a 'first past the post' system where the party with an overall majority is the government, not proportional representation as in other european countries. The prime minister is the leader of the winning party. The parliamentary districts are in all 'countries'. Scotland also has it's own parliament with it's own elections. So a scottish mp elected in the general election can sit in london, and in scotland. But english mp's can't... peverse eh!! :)

A REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION! (WITH NO SILLY ANSWERS PLEASE!)
Nations normally refer to a collection of peoples under a flag (sometimes of convenience) which is why Palestine could be called a nation state and why some call Scotland a nation - of Scots! :) The United Kingdom is a country that consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In fact, the official name of the country is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." Great Britain is the name of the island northwest of France and east of Ireland that consists of three somewhat autonomous regions: England, Wales and Scotland. Therefore, England is part of Great Britain, which is part of the United Kingdom. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are not strictly speaking countries but nations, but the United Kingdom is. The remaining portion of the island of Ireland (that which is not the U.K.'s Northern Ireland) is an independent country called the Republic of Ireland (Eire). So England is not country, but a Nation. Try telling that to the general xenophobic population! On another note. England is split into counties ~40 e.g Lancashire, Cheshire. Which are somewhat autonomous. Scotland and England have had a common government since the English routed the scots and King James VI was made king of England &Scotland. The 'countries' are fiercly independant though and have recently started having 'devoluted' parliaments with their own laws. Hope that clears some things up!!

FOR EUROPEANS!
the Euro has got some benefits over individual currencies... strength in numbers being one. But it also depends on further integration... political/economic....etc and that people is a different kettle of fish!! I still HATE economics, but not as much as politics (f**** egocentric charlatans!!) :)
-
FOR EUROPEANS!
the dollars weak at the moment... the euro has been getting stronger as a result of other european currencies... sterling is stable-ish I hate economics.... :)
-
FOR EUROPEANS!
The euro was set at a certain ratio of mark:euro franc:euro lira:euro etc for all member countries using it. This doesn't change. The euro fluctuates in value against competitor currencies sterling/dollar being the most important. nFrance and Germany are the 'power' currencies of the euro (which is why they;re so f**** jealous of sterling, cos it's better, and why uk has not gone into the eurozone, cos the euro hasn't fullfilled all the required criteria for stability)... so, if germany or france suffer economically then the euro suffers and vice-versa. here endeth the lesson... :)
