  19. Features that benefited human evolution There are several species that hominids gained over time through natural selection that enabled their successful evolution. These are mentioned in the bullet points below as well as the advantage to hominids: · Bipedalism: A bipedal organism walks upright on two legs. This enables the organism to free up two hands, which can then be used to carry tools. A bipedal stance also enables the organism to run quicker, allowing more successful hunting. It also requires less energy usage for a bipedal stance when compared to a quadrupedal stance. The position of the foramen magnum in the skull can indicate as to the stance of the organism. A foramen magnum that is forward, towards the middle of the skull indicates Bipedalism, while a foramen magnum at the rear of the skull indicates quadrupedal stance. Other apes such as chimps do not have a skeletal structure like humans that allows for upright movement. Such skeletal adaptations are a curved spine that acts as a spring, as well as an angled femur from the knee joint, chimps do not have this a consequently find it very difficult to stand on tow legs for and extended period of time.
  20. read this: it will explain... What is so special about Primates? Primates have several unique features which allow them to be the most advanced group of organism on the planet. These features are listed below: · Hands and feet: thumbs are opposable, Five digits (pentadactyl limb) · Vision: stereoscopic · Skeletons: Flexible, Rotating sockets (ball and socket joints) · Brain: Large for size compared to other animals, Large cerebral cortex enables complex thought · Social Behaviour: Primates often live in groups and are highly sociable · Gestation: give birth to single offspring, long period of gestation, long period of care after birth Types of primates There are six groups of animals that make up the primate group. These are as follows: · Lemurs · Tarsiers · New world monkeys (found in the Americas) · Old world monkeys (found in Africa and Asia) · Apes (Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Orang Utans & Gibbons) · Hominids Names, Classification and all The anthropoids are a group of primates including new world monkeys, old world monkeys, apes and hominids. Most anthropoids are able to use objects as tools or some sort of weapon. Hominoid is a term that refers to a group of anthropoids which include humans, chimpanzees and gorillas. Hominid refers to the group of erect-walking great apes (hominoid). This group includes the genus of Homo, Australopithecus and Paranthropus. Homo Sapiens (Humans) are the only hominid species alive today.
