I thought Christian saying You can go now Michael meant that Michael could now die. This was the reason he couldn't die earlier.

I hope Desmond stays a main character next season. But with the Ben vs. Widmore storyline becoming even more important I can see him playing an important role (protecting Penny). I really like the character of Ben, but if he's gonna kill Penny, I hope Des will kill him to prevent it. And Lockes "death" doesn't mean anything. There is a lot more behind that story.
