Coachella 2012 Line Up
Back from the festival and like always, had a great time. The weather was absolutely brutal (I think it was over 100 degrees all three days!) but the amazing lineup more than made up for it. Highlights: -Pulp -Mazzy Star (Hope Sandoval ) -M83 -Jeff Mangum (other than the scary moment when a fan like fainted from dehydration) -Flying Lotus (new stuff sounds great) -SBTRKT -Radiohead -Modeselektor (Thom Yorke on Shipwreck :awesome:) -Dr. Dre + Snoop Dogg (Great trip down memory lane. Never seen so many white people dance so awkwardly before :D) Disappointments: -Other Lives (people on this board seem to like them; I think their songs all sound the same) -Neon Indian (stuff doesn't translate to a large, festival setting) -Arctic Monkeys -Destroyer -Andrew Bird -tUnE-yArDs -The Weeknd (one of the performances I was really looking forward to and I was terribly let down; off key on so many occasions :() Most overrated: -Radiohead: they sounded great but definitely needed more festival friendly songs; big WTF on House of Cards -Dr. Dre + Snoop Dogg: Much attention is given to the whole Tupac hologram thing and seeing it in person, I was just kind of baffled.)

U.S. Secret Service Prostitution Scandal
Considering the fact that in a Monday meeting with congressional investigators, the director of Secret Service himself, expressed concern that there was sensitive information in one or more of the rooms at the Hotel Caribe.... then yeah I think there's legitimate concern: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/04/congressional-oversight-leaders-say-secret-service-agents-brought-prostitutes-into-contact-with-sensitive-security-information/ I mean, the coverage of this case in the US is remarkably different than the other sex scandals. The evening news coverage focuses more on the investigations, comedians are making less jokes about it, etc. And the reason is simple: this isn't some Anthony Weiner sending his picture of his weiner to girls on twitter or Eliot Spitzer hiring a call girl. It's not John Edwards having a baby with his mistress or Larry Craig making advances in the men's bathroom.... This is a matter of people failing in their duty to be vigilant at all times and protect our leaders. Plus add the fact that Secret Service is funded by taxpayer money and you can understand why there's only outrage on both sides of the political spectrum. I'm glad you brought up the Reagan assassination attempt because then you would surely know the regulations that were enacted after the incident. Such as the formation of the Magnetometer Support Unit to ensure that all persons entering secure areas occupied by Secret Service protectees are unarmed. Personal experience: Candidate Barack Obama held a rally in the Meadowlands in Feb 2008 and had Secret Service protection. Absolutely no bags were allowed and security thoroughly made sure people going in didn't have a weapon. This is the standard.

Did you leave the Pulp set early to ensure good space for Mazzy Star? I've already seen Pulp at Radio City Music Hall so I wouldn't mind (too much) leaving early to see Mazzy Star. Brings back good childhood memories (Fade Into You ) And how far back were you after you went to Dr. Dre + Snoop after Florence? I'm not going to miss out on Modeselektor and I really don't want to see Justice + At The Drive-In just for the headliner.

U.S. Secret Service Prostitution Scandal
First off, Secret Service is assigned to other people than the President so no, this pertains to other people than the president (Newt Gingrich for example has Secret Service protection). Their primary job is to protect important figures and their actions showed a lack of responsibility and a lapse of judgement. That these lapses occurred in Colombia, a nation with high levels of violence and a history of kidnappings and assassinations, only underscores the need for a thorough and independent investigation. As the Boston Globe wrote in its staff editorial, "This is not strictly a matter of morality, marital fidelity, or following the law. A president’s personal safety abroad is a matter of national security." The good news is three people have already been dismissed and I would be shocked if that's all the dismissals. The bipartisan committee is launching an investigation to figure out the full details of what happened and to ensure that this isn't a regular occurrence. Sure, that probably has a lot to do with why this is getting so much attention. But that's not the only reason - it's a big security issue. Not only is this pure speculation, Secret Service follows the President everywhere. At the Irish pub you mentioned? Secret Service was there to accompany the President. I hope you don't think the President randomly decided to visit a pub without going over full security details. You do realize that before the President (or any person under Secret Service protection) makes a public appearance, security details ramp up 1000% right? Not only are Secret Service agents situated EVERYWHERE, they scope out the area beforehand to find + eliminate any possible threats.

What other acts did you see? I recently bought 2 tickets for this weekend and planned out a rough itinerary (assuming set times remain the same) but maybe there's an act that I definitely shouldn't miss out on?

U.S. Secret Service Prostitution Scandal
First off, there's been bipartisan outrage so you couldn't be farther from the truth that this is "only some Republican" with an "agenda." Here's the letter sent by Reps. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Elijah Cummings, D-Md (the Chair and ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform) to Mark J. Sullivan, the director of the U.S. Secret Service today: http://abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/SS%20letter%20to%20Oversight%20Committee%20on%20misconduct.pdf This IS an issue because the people assigned to protect the president, his family and many of the nation's top leaders flouted rules and engaged in misconduct that could have compromised the safety of our leaders.

Radiohead
For those who missed the stream: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZEb0ZQKaMY]Radiohead Live at Coachella 2012 FULL PERFORMANCE - Pro Shot - YouTube[/ame] It's in poor quality and doesn't even come close to recreating the sounds of the stream, probably because YouTube compresses the audio (I think there's some HD clips floating around if you guys want to look for it). But even still, you can see a band at the top of its game. If they sprinkled in a bit more festival-friendly songs (Fake Plastic Trees, Creep, etc), their 2012 Coachella set would be remembered as one of the festival's greatest performances of all-time. That's how good they were. :shocked2:

Radiohead
Especially since Thom can no longer sing the song properly. They should bring back Blow Out. :awesome: I talked a bit about this in the Coachella thread but I've been going to the festival every year since 2004, with the exception of 2005 and this year (although I think I will buy weekend 2 tickets off Stubhub after all :P). Went straight from the Franz Ferdinand set to the Sahara Tent to ensure I would get a decent spot for Daft Punk. Missed out on Depeche Mode but sooo worth it :smug: (On that note, whatever happened to Franz Ferdinand? It's like they disappeared off the face of the planet ).

Great pop song. I was actually going to include it but it's technically a 2011 release. :(
-
Radiohead
Brilliant performances of every single song so far... even Identikit and I normally don't like that song :shocked2: Radiohead is simply blowing out every other bands' performances. Edit: They faltered a bit towards the end, especially with the encores. Probably won't rank in the pantheon of transcendent Coachella performances (e.g. Daft Punk in 2006, Björk in 2007, My Bloody Valentine in 2009) but still a great performance. Really glad I stayed up to watch

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYoxBQ03wUQ&ob=av2n]Justin Bieber - Boyfriend (Audio) - YouTube[/ame] It's an ok song; at the very least, it shows a maturation of Justin Bieber's sound. He's no longer in the "Baby Baby Baby Ohhhhhh" phase. Plus it pales to the vastly superior "Call Me Maybe" :)
