Professor Peedston
First things first, tell him to buy a big chart that has every chord known to mankind, or a book or something. I've been playing guitar for years and piano for even longer and I still find myself looking up the more obscure variations every now and then. Skinned Alive
try this: http://www.supersonic.net/guitar/lessons.htm also, here's a site which lists every chord and scale: http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse hope that helps
Gas_Man
also..maybe buy a tuner. If your friend is playing chords correct, yet the strings are out of tune, they will not sound good ;) First chord i ever played on the guitar was 'A7sus4' which is one of the first chords on one of the guitars playing, in Cast No Shadow  after that!...i was playing D7s and C7s. Life was never the same  :D

mycdplayerisbroke
i dont like guitar im learning it for a class in school it'd be cool but we're learning standard notation before tab and that just doesnt fly with me
Professor Peedston
Standard notation is much more usefal than tabs. :wink3: But I had a head start when I started learning guitar because I was already playing two other instruments.
mycdplayerisbroke
i just dont understand which notes to play on standard notation. because there are like 12 different kinds of Fs... but are there 12 lines for them above or below the staff? i think not
Professor Peedston
That's why you'll usually see a position number on guitar music so that you know where on the fretboard you should be. ie., if you see a 5 above the staff then you're in 5th position, which means that your index finger will be at the 5th fret. It's much simpler than it seems sometimes.
mycdplayerisbroke
so thats what C7 and such mean? how many positions are there? i dont think i'd see any of those yet. its just a beginning class, i dont even have my own guitar its the schools and i borrow it but i never take it home cuz it looks gay walking to and from class with a guitar case
