The classics or modern?

Featured Replies

We are asks this in school really often.....and I sometimes wonder it aswell:

What do you consider as more important:

To read the classics of literature in school (in your mother tongue and in other languages for example)?

Or to read modern, maybe scientific texts (like about genetic engineering or techincs)?

For me I'm not sure....I think I like more the classics.....but the modern texts are also important......nowadays!

well.... the modern texts obviously to me are more important than classic texts by far... I mean if you're comparing science to literature obviously science is more important.

Ok.........my question is a bit wrong....I mean maybe this is better:

Do you think you should read more scientific texts in school?Or more classics?

Both are important. I like to read but I'm just so lazy that I don't really read nowadays... maybe languagewise the older classics are harder and not so entertaining, but once you've got the hang of it they're great :) there are also newer classics, or "future classics" that I'd always like to read but in the end I don't ever have time to actually start reading them (excuses, I know..) I think I just have problems in concentrating to one thing for a long time :D

There are so many texts that are important and useful, and it's good that nowadays even the modern, informative texts are made so that even a layperson can understand them :)

I don't think that what you presented is comparable.

If you are talking about literature, I prefer modern.

You ought to read a balance of the two. The classics are your literary heritage, and most of the time they are classics because they are still relevant however many years later. To read both means that you have a basis for comparison.
