an idea that came to mind when I realized I hate this situation

Featured Replies

this situation: school

more specifically I hate my major. I don't neccessarily hate school because I love some classes. I love learning about some things and being around other people in a social atmosphere. But I hate my major because whatever I make will not make people happy as an engineer, especially myself. I'm not going to look at what I made and obsess over it. For those that do I am sooo glad they are there, but it's not me.

So now that I've explained what it is that I hate my conclusion is that I should move on to do the things that I want. Otherwise I am hurting and in turn hating myself. If I can't do things for myself then I'm not loving myself. Loving everyone is important and I also believe loving yourself is very important. If you don't love yourself and you don't make sacrifices for yourself (in this case the sacrifice I would be making is all the previous years of work) then you are proving yourself weak and... I believe that's what I'm doing is proving myself to weak to even love myself... I just want to know what people think about this and possibly have a nice philosophical discussion

You have to be true to yourself. For me, choosing my major (anthropology and french) came down to passion (not money, not what anyone else wanted me to to do). If you don't feel passionate about engineering then maybe you should take some time to explore the subject areas you do get really excited about. It's not the end of the world if you have to go back and take a bunch more classes to graduate, if in the long run you are going to be happier. Sadly we do live in a world that runs on money, so of course you have to have realistic goals in mind...but you shouldn't limit yourself either. I wouldn't go as far to say that you're being weak. Change is difficult and scary. But keep in mind that the average college student changes their major like 3-5 times, so you're not alone. Instead of changing my major, I just refused to declare mine for 3 years because I couldn't make up my mind....physics, aerospace engineering, french, anthropology, environmental science...yeah, I was confused. :P Best of luck to you! I'll leave you with this tried and true advice: Just follow your

:D

Eric sometimes you need to think about the stuff you are doing. There is people that take a break to have sometimes for herself or himself.

Thinking about future could be scary, but the things we decide now would make easy the things in our future.

One of my advices, would be in case that you decide to change your major or take a time for yourself,is try to do something. One of the worse things in this world is don't do nothing.

Do anything you want.

Don't make the mistake of giving up on something you want just because it seems difficult. And don't let other people make you feel like you can't change your mind because it's your life, not anyone else's. I really have issues with college as well because I find most of my classes to be pointless, and with tuition costs skyrocketing year after year, it pisses me off that I have to pay for electives as well as what is in my major.

But whatever...those are my issues. The truth is that none of us know what the hell all this work is going to amount to in the end, so it's hard to keep a positive attitude about any major. I am constantly wondering if I should have stuck with biology as my major (instead of psych) because it might make for a more lucrative career later on...but it is kind of late for me to consider trying bio all over again. I say do what you're good at, but make sure you like it because there are tons of things out there to try.

heh, I really didn't expect so much advice, guys I really appreciate it soooooo much. I feel so much pressure all around from people who want to know how my classes are going and I don't want to talk to them about it. I'm cutting them out of my conversations because I hate talking about how I'm doing in engineering. I know they assume that I am doing so well and I like it or something so it helps a LOTTT to hear this from you three

If you don't feel passionate about engineering then maybe you should take some time to explore the subject areas you do get really excited about.

ah, yes (sorry, what's your name? I'm eric) I want to study philosophy... well... it's the first thing that caught my eye. I would also like to write, but not to be a reporter. Honestly what I really want to do is write, but I want to get a nice major that's going to get me a real job and I'm not sure what either one of those would get me. I am really picky as to what job I want now though because of a co-op I did as a mechanical engineer... I found out how much I hated it... before that co-op I really thought I would love engineering, but now I hate it with a passion.

I seriously didn't know that ... and thanks for the advice. it really means a lot

Thinking about future could be scary' date='but the things we decide now would make easy the things in our future.[/quote']

I totally agree with you alfredo... I guess I should add that I would change this major right away with little second thought about it if I had my parent's support. I feel like I'm disappointing them but... I guess it's not about them... It seems almost childish or... too dependent or something that I say that

I find most of my classes to be pointless' date=' and with tuition costs skyrocketing year after year, it pisses me off that I have to pay for electives as well as what is in my major.[/quote']

heh, I'm totally with you on that... the government really loves to waste it's money on putting us in school. it really doesn't make sense, and then they waste our money in college. School should be more like training and take wayyyyyy less time. I really think the people who put schools together make a lot of mistakes for people that just want to get a major in a specific degree... I mean, if someone wants to take those classes, more power to them... but our governments waste a lot of money and time and stress and everything to put people in school for 16 years before they get a job...

but it is kind of late for me to consider trying bio all over again.

hmm, I don't know... right now (technically) although I still probably have 2 years left of school and I feel deep too, but I REALLY want to change this before I leave college and feel like crap doing a profession I hate. It doesn't sound like you would really hate a profession in psyc though so... you're not so bad off I guess if you like it. My dad was a psych major but... he makes artificial limbs for amputees and stuff :P ... I have no idea how he got that job  really it looks like a pretty decent job to me... and random

eric, do what YOU want to do. the worst mistake ppl make in thier lives which they regret is doing something they hate...

hehe well.........I think your major is similar to the three mahor subjects I had to choose in school since class 11......

So i chose English (becuase I like it),german (because I was not that bad at it and liked it).......and then there was the third one....it had to fit in my combination......so I chose history(I said ok it's an interesting subject....).but music....yeah....music is my life and so my favourite subject...I want to study it etc.....etc.........

BUT:

1.My school doesn't give us the chance to choose music major course (not enough people i think)

2.There wasn't any combination that would have fit to my interests (every combination with music also included scientifc subjects or maths)

So it was impossible for me to choose music.....

Yeah and now I have it as a minor course.....

I'm not relly satisfied with it....but i have to live with it....

So I don#t know what a major is in America and how you have to deal with it(if you can choose another one just because you don't like your current subject....

If you can I would do it......I hate nothing more than doing things in school I don#t like and I don't have a connection with.....

I think it's the same with chosing a job:

Do always what your heart says and not what your portemonee says!

I think if you do something in life you do not really like then stop it.....

You only live ONCE and you have to make the best of it!:daisy:

wow, you can't just pick one? that seems rather dumb.. what do math and science have to do with music ????? and I'm starting to realize what I really think I want to do is study writing in an artistic sense...

i would choose Music and Art as hobby,Eric

i think if you have a chance and talent in other important subjects - choose them...even if they "bore" you sometimes,i would think first with my brain and care about my future and after "ask" my heart

  • Author

I understand, but some things are more than a "bore" I would rather not exist than be bored for the rest of my life like a bird in a cage. I wouldn't say that's ignoring my brain. But my happiness is more important than my wealth unless wealth brings me happiness, then they would coincide. But logically I would rather be happy than rich and as long as I can support a family I will be happy if I'm also happy with what I do. I could also get a job as a teacher if I couldn't find anything else. Right now I do have an associate's degree :stunned: I don't know if I can get anything with that

No....we have to pick threee....and in one year I have to take my last exams in the three major subjects....and es I know the thing with the combinations sucks....if I chose music as major i ad to choose biology, physics, chemistry or math as a major course aswell.......I got rid of chemistry and physics......and math and biology re minor subjects and my worst subjects!

Oh erm.......a question:

When you have finished the thing with the major, then you are educated for a job and can have a job?

Because this is different here.....when I've finished school I can go to university and there I can choose whatever I want......my majors in school are not that relevant then anymore.....

So I'll choose music there as my subject!

  • Author

yea, if I finish this degree I can get a job as an engineer after that as long as people are still looking for engineers. And with my previous job experience I don't think that would be much of a problem. However a lot of engineers don't get hired right after they graduate because they have no job experience in their field.

Oh....then it's different to my situation....it's just at the moment that I can't choose music.....in a year I can.....

and then I understand that your situation really sucks!

But why did you choose engineering at least?

ah, yes (sorry, what's your name? I'm eric) I want to study philosophy... well... it's the first thing that caught my eye. I would also like to write, but not to be a reporter. Follow up time! :P Made any decisions regarding your major yet? Sounds like that ME coop internship, or whatever it was, must have been pretty awful! However I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss engineering (since you've already invested so much time into it) based on that one bad experience. If you think you could still have a little space in your heart for engineering, go talk to an advisor and tell them how you're feeling. Maybe they can help direct you to an aspect of engineering where you can put your writing skills to use! Maybe get another internship that is more exciting. But if your gut is still telling you, after all that, to do something else, then do somethign else! (btw, my name is Nadia) ;)
