Montenegro independence

Featured Replies

Montenegro has narrowly voted for independence from its union with Serbia, unofficial projections show.

Indications are that 55.3% of voters elected to secede from Serbia, just above the 55% required for victory. Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic claimed early on Monday that his drive for independence had been successful. But official results are not expected for several hours. If confirmed, the independence vote would erase the last vestige of the former Yugoslavia.

The question of independence has deeply divided Montenegro, with its opponents arguing that it will damage economic, family and political ties with Serbia. Mr Djukanovic argued that an independent Montenegro will have a stronger economy and will be a better candidate for admission into the European Union.

Any comments about it? anyone from Monenegro?

I don't know very much about the old conflict in the Balcans but definitely Serbian politics in its approach to the EU and world economy haven't been good. Serbia keeps its isolation so I understand why people in Montenegro want to get independent. That might be good for them.

Not many people interested, eh? :P

I'm neither interested at all, just thought it was important enough for a thread.

I just heard their national anthem and it sounds like the Magic Roundabout theme tune!!:P

Montenegro anthem? you already see how divided things were, since they had their own national one!

Well, i aint very knowledgeable about things going on in the Balcans.

i'm under the impression that Yogoslavia aint a stable country. And i really feel sorry for the people there, they gotta face numerous conflicts!

LOL ultracold you're some 15 years in history eh?

That's when Yougoslavia has broken down, it was only Serbia and Montenegro left of that country in a union, and now they're separated, though I think there'll still be problems with Kosovo in future...

Okay Tulac, you're Croatian, surely you know a lot more about the Balcans than i do!:) But in China, there're still loads of guys calling it Yougoslavia, and there're quite many Yougoslavian football players and coaches here!;)

That's no surprise really, most people do so, after all it's just small part of Europe that goes to war every now and then. And only then people hear about them.
