Manchester Banned

England fans will not be allowed to watch live home matches in the centre of Manchester following arrests during the screening of Saturday's game.

To avoid future trouble with drunk and disorderly fans, the BBC and Manchester City Council have decided not to screen any England matches in Exchange Square.

Instead, a new Big Screen will be set up in Castlefield and fans will have to apply for free tickets to gain access.

All other World Cup games will continue to be shown in Exchange Square.

However, England v Trinidad and Tobago will not be shown on 15 June as authorities claim they will not be able to guarantee crowd safety.

Troublemakers

A total of 12,000 fans packed out Exchange Square in the city's main shopping district at the weekend - twice as many as were expected - and extra police had to be drafted in to deal with the crowds

City Centre Councillor Pat Karney said: "Manchester's outdoor events are very well attended and the majority of the crowd are well behaved.

"From time to time a small minority of trouble makers unfortunately jeopardise the enjoyment of others.

"Manchester will not tolerate this behaviour and will take measures to prevent it."

The Big Screen in Castlefield will be ready for England's match against Sweden on 20 June.

All future screenings of England matches will be ticket-only affairs but it is yet to be decided how they will be distributed.

Mr Karney added: "Manchester is keen to continue the world cup screenings and all partners including the police, the NHS, City Centre Management and the BBC are working together to ensure crowd safety is paramount."

I am so glad someone seen some sense... but also angry at the scum that was there on Saturday... having no respect whatsover for families with kids etc.

Smoking weed, drinking where drinking is Banned... and being plain and dam right rude, also racist... and I am sorry to say there was a singnafinent number of these local inbreds. I went home in disgust, and also fearing for my own saftey. Due to a section of the crowd thinking I was from Parurgry so flipping what, I did not tell them I was not, as the abuse I got was down to the colour of my skin.

I have long go on and said and prided myself being a mancuican due, to its very cosmo ethic..... I was quite supraised there was not more coverage about it...

I hope they all die... a very painful death

It was dam right despectful. In the past these events have all been in a great spirt

Yes I did not realise till afterwards ! slaps himselfs

I was there at the Argentina game in 02, no trouble at all. There were far more there this week, many of whom can't possibly have seen the big screen properly. If it was only a minority I think the correct decision would have been to police the event tighter. Banning big screen events benifits no-one in the long run, it simply reflects badly on the whole city. Don't let these dickheads win!

True ! ^

isn't this the same story Jen and Ian posted???

Kind of. Manchester wasn't mentioned as having trouble, and there was no mention of a Manchester ban in the national news.

Why do the ignorant yobs always have to spoil things for everyone else?
