Michael Owen's World Cup is in doubt after the striker was stretchered off in the first minute of England's match against Sweden in Cologne.

The Newcastle forward twisted his right knee as he played a pass to Ashley Cole near the right touchline and was replaced by Liverpool's Peter Crouch.

Ice was put on the knee and it was reported that a brace was also applied.

Owen will have a scan on the injured knee in Cologne on Wednesday according to the Football Association.

England skipper David Beckham said he believed Owen's injury was serious.

He said: "I think it's a bad one. We are going to have to wait to see what the doctors say tomorrow.

"It's sad - Michael's one of those players you need in big tournaments. It's unfortunate for him and for us."

He was substituted in England's opening two World Cup games, having looked less than fully fit. Owen only returned to action a month ago after breaking his foot on 31 December playing for Newcastle.

that was a very nasty looking. poor fella. with the FA saying its only a twisted knee, sounds like they haven't sorted him with strong painkillers either.

I know they need to show these things, but I really didn't need to see his knee popping quite so many times

yowzzzzaaaaaaah! :stunned: reading that just made my knees ache.

I think it's more a case of "almost certain" to miss the rest...........................

I missed the first 5 minutes so I didn't see the injury.

noooooooooooooo! it looked pretty painful/funky when he went down. poor thing!

That man has suffered enough. Now the WC is a bit less fun
