Timberlake wins at MTV Europe Awards

US pop singer Justin Timberlake and hip hop duo Gnarls Barkley have emerged as the big winners at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards, taking home two prizes each.

Timberlake, 25, who also hosted the 13th annual event in Denmark, collected best male and best pop act.

Gnarls Barkley won best new act and best song for Crazy at the Copenhagen ceremony.

Also competing for best male had been Robbie Williams, Kayne West, Pharrell and Sean Paul.

And Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Shakira and Williams had been on the shortlist for best song.

Gnarls Barkley beat off competition from the likes of Rhianna and Nelly Furtado to land the best song accolade.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, who had nominations in four categories, picked up just one award, the best album prize for Stadium Arcadium.

Aguilera was named best female artist, while The Killers were crowned best rock act.

The Kooks picked up the best UK and Ireland act and Kanye West won the best hip hop act award.

Other winners on the night included Rihanna for best R&B artist and Depeche Mode for best group.

Despite picking up three nominations, US pop star Madonna failed to land a single award.

The awards ceremony was held in Copenhagen's Bella Center Convention Hall.

The winners were chosen by music fans across Europe.

Last year's big winners were US rock band Green Day and British group Coldplay, who both picked up two prizes.

The 2005 event was held in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

Likable Timberlake gets lost in the round

200-6LAKE.108575.embedded.prod_affiliate.2.jpg

That's a question I often ask when listening to Justin Timberlake's heavily layered but likable recordings because his voice is usually buried in the mix.

That's a question I also often asked Saturday at Xcel Energy Center at the pop supernova's likable but underwhelming second solo concert tour.

His ambitious in-the-round spectacle could have proved that Timberlake, who turns 26 this week, is the most well-rounded entertainer of his generation. (Sorry, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, John Mayer and Eminem.) But it was one of the most poorly conceived and executed in-the-round arena concerts I've ever seen.

The biggest problem was finding the star amid all the busyness onstage. He surrounded himself with 12 musicians/singers and nine dancers who usually performed on the same tier as he did. With a multitiered stage, why not elevate -- or isolate -- the star more often? Why not focus more spotlights prominently on him on this dimly but artfully lit stage? Why not try to work all 360 degrees of the crowd?

To compound the visual problems, there was no conventional big-screen video action. Rather, Timberlake opted for artful scrims that hung from the riggings above the circular stage. Thus the stage on which he was performing became largely obscured, but the 15,000 fans could sort of see him projected large on curved, gauzy scrims.

Arrrrgh!

All this was frustrating (I was in the front row on the side of the ice rink) and unfortunate because when we could see Timberlake, he was a dazzling dancer and a charismatic presence. Moreover, he showed that he's a soulful singer as well as a skillful pianist and acoustic guitarist.

During the first hourlong set, Timberlake proved himself on "My Love," his recent smash. As he skittered onto one of the stage's runways, the scene was all girlish screams, flashbulbs exploding and his falsetto. The song may not have been the symphony that the lyrics promised but his dancing was dynamic -- locking and popping, slipping and sliding in the spirit of vintage Michael Jackson.

Another smart move in the first set was bringing producer/rapper Timbaland onstage to join Justin for a spirited "Chop Me Up." But then the resurging momentum was butchered by turning the stage over to Timbaland for a 20-minute DJ set of snippets of hits by the Fray, Kelly Clarkson, Coldplay, Nelly Furtado and Jackson.

After this overlong interlude, Timberlake returned like a new man in brighter lights, with less stage clutter, more forays around the ramps and runways -- and more big hits for 75 minutes.

Finally, we found Justin, without his suit but with a fedora, a loose tie and those dance-happy white tennis shoes. He strutted on "Rock Your Body" and crooned a reenvisioned "Gone" by 'N Sync, his old group. He got in fans' faces for "Love Stoned," and "SexyBack" was, of course, sexy. And, after tipping his hat musically to Jacko and Prince, Timberlake saluted Stevie Wonder on the encore with the original piano ballad "All Over Again." What a well-rounded performance in the second half!

Opening was Pink, who prudently did more with less, using her great voice, great middle-finger-to-you attitude and daring-doo (twirling above the stage Cirque du Soleil-style) to overcome the limitations of the stage and the datedness of her bubblegummy rock/pop sound.

TIMBERLAKE’S INTERPOL INSPIRED MUSIC PRODUCES ‘COLDPLAY’

The album, however, is legitimately adventurous in other ways. It doesn’t touch on biological daddy’s bluegrass, but it does have the feel of a Southern jam session, one that just happens to be a digital overdub hootenanny as well. Timberlake told Rolling Stone that the trio he forms with Timbaland and Nate “Danja” Hills (Timbaland’s current aide de camp) works like a garage band. That’s just spin, but the album is loose and somewhat freewheeling, especially on its various preludes and interludes, which range from clever variations on the core material to nearly realized songs. Best of all the ‘ludes is “I Think She Knows,” a sweetly droning orchestral guitar tune reportedly inspired by Interpol. As it happily turns out, when a Michael Jackson devotee looks to Interpol, the best ever Coldplay song results. Whether or not Timberlake, Timbaland, and Hills are the world’s richest garage band, the looseness recedes when the trio is separated. Ironically, the least “organic” sounding tune on the record is “Another Song (All Over Again),” an uneventful Al Green-y ballad produced by famous naturalist Rick Rubin.

A Diamond for Justin Timberlake

a7899.jpg

Lighting designer Bryan Leitch has specified Avolites to control lighting for Justin Timberlake’s extensive Future Sex/Love world tour – one of the hottest shows of 2007 - which kicked off in the US and Canada to rave reviews and much excitement.

As soon as Leitch won the design contract - his innovative and creative approach impressed the artist and his production management team - his company Siyan immediately purchased two additional Diamond 4s from Avo. (Siyan’s three existing D4 consoles were already committed and spec'd onto other tours running during the same period.)

"There was absolutely no question of anything other than a D4 when it came to choosing a console,"

states Leitch adamantly. "It's the only desk for the job."

Leitch co-designed and developed the Future Sex/Love show with programmer Nick Whitehouse, who is out with it as lighting director. The two had worked together on Coldplay's seminal 2003/04 ‘Rush of Blood To The Head’ tour - also utilizing a D4 - and are one of the UK’s most successful live music ‘visual teams’.

They needed a console with the power and flexibility to run a large show and the D4 is once again proving to be the perfect creative and practical instrument.

Fixture wise, the D4 is controlling over 120 Vari*Lites (a mix of VL4s and VL3000 spots and washes plus 12 VL1000s), 120 ColorKinetics ColorBlasts, 20 Syncrolites (eight 1ks and 12 3ks), 40 Atomic 3k strobes with colour changers and 40 4-cell Moles.

Leitch asked PRG to supply the rest of the tour’s lighting kit other than the front-end control.

The spectacular Future Sex/Love trussing architecture was custom made by Show Rig in Las Vegas, and is based on a series of elegant spiraling curves and spheres, mirroring the industrial-styled, multi-layered, in-the-round stage set below.

The tour kicked off in San Diego in January and hits the UK and Europe in April and May.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE religiously listens to music by COLDPLAY before he performs on tour, claiming it enhances his stage performance. The SEXYBACK singer says he plays the band's song CLOCKS and also does mild exercise before every gig. He says, "It turned into a superstition because, after I heard that song, I felt like it would be a good show."

I'd heard that too. At least he has taste when it comes to other people's music.:P

I think I'll let Nadia handle that, lol. I'll stick with stalking Coldplay's space for adds. The lmusic is much better!:D

Timberlake: 'I Called Britney'

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE has confirmed reports he reached out to his ex girlfriend BRITNEY SPEARS after learning she had checked into rehab in February.

The Cry Me A River singer admits his heart went out to the troubled Toxic singer after he heard she'd hit rock bottom after a series of headline-grabbing antics, including shaving off her hair and arriving at Hollywood parties without underwear.

Timberlake says, "I called her because I worried about her.

"She's a great woman. I'm rooting for her. (It) seems like she's getting everything under control now."

Timberlake tours with Avolites

008112BD78.jpg

LD / operator Nick Whitehouse at the D4 console.

UK - Lighting designer and operator Nick Whitehouse is using an Avolites Diamond 4 Vision console on Justin Timberlake's Future Sex/Love world tour, which is currently playing its UK and European sections.

The D4 is controlling 76 Vari*Lite 3000 Spots, 32 Vari*Lite 3000 Washes, 8 Vari*Lite 1000 AS fixtures, 34 Vari*Lite 4s, 50 Atomic strobes and scrollers, 50 Molefeys, eight MX1000 Syncrolights, 12 MX3000 Syncrolights, 120 Color Kinetics ColorBlast 12 truss toners and a series of LED strips illuminating the four bars inbuilt into the stage set.

The shape of the lighting rig is based on over a kilometre of curved trussing custom made by LA-based Show Rig which mirrors the geometry of the stage below. It was designed around six moving screens which fly in and out to different positions constantly throughout the show, which is a high octane fusion of live performance, lighting and video. The lights are dotted all across the overhead trusses and are recessed into the stage set and floor.

Whitehouse and his colleague Bryan Leitch of the UK-based lighting design practice Visual Light were invited to design the show after Timberlake saw their work on Coldplay's 2005 world tour. JT artistically directs his own show in addition to starring in it, and specifically wanted lighting that was theatrical in essence. He was impressed by Visual Light's innovative, fresh and positive approach to aesthetics and stage presentation.

Whitehouse's lighting is dynamic, raw and contrasty - very much matching the style and pace of the show. Whitehouse and the video department - a combination of playback visuals created by Geodezik and a live IMAG mix cut by Steve Fatone - have also worked very closely on constructing a visual coherence for the show.

Whitehouse has always been a keen Avo user. He was also one of the first people to start using the D4 series soon after its launch, and comments, "It's the perfect console for the job, it does everything I need."

http://www.lsionline.co.uk/news/story.asp?ID=-Z7U3YG

he puts on an impressive show......

And that's all he is!!;)

must say he's got good taste in... lighting

Well he needs that and the "dance show" to compensate for the p*ss-poor music he keeps churning out!!:P

Justin Timberlake Desperate To Duet With Coldplay

2006-11-01T195537Z_01_NOOTR_RTRJONP_2_India-274576-1-pic0.jpg

London, June 27 (ANI): If there’s one band that Justin Timberlake is desperate to perform with, it would be British band Coldplay.

The Sexy Back singer insists that Coldplay are the ‘modern Beatles’, and that’s why he would give an arm and a leg to duet with them.

And, even in the band Timberlake knows just who he wants to jam with – Gwyneth Paltrow’s hubby Chris Martin.

"Coldplay are the modern Beatles, so I’d love to do a duet with them — especially Chris Martin," The Sun quoted him, as saying.

The singer, who is currently touring in Europe, got into an altercation with fans while in performing in Sweden.

The singer's patience was already stretched thin when a group of teenagers began taunting him while at Gothenburg's Hard Rock Cafe.

However, when they continued to do so at the Elite Plaza hotel where Timberlake was staying, he lost his cool, and let fly not only ping-pong bottles and strawberries at them, but also spit.

But Timberlake did manage to get over his ire, playing to a sell-out crowd the next day. (ANI)

Justin Timberlake to earn £2,888 each minute on world tour

He's one of the most talented musicians around - and he's dating gorgeous actress Jessica Biel.

But, just in case that wasn't enough to make him happy, we can reveal that Justin Timberlake is raking in a massive £35 million from his current world tour.

This payday of epic proportions is more than some of the biggest names in music earned last year - including Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Coldplay, and P. Diddy.

The 26-year-old, wrapped up the European leg of his Future Sex/Love Sounds Tour in London's O2 Arena last Tuesday and he's set to kick off the US leg in Memphis on 6 August.

He will play a total of 101 gigs and, for his trouble, he's picking up a cheque for a cool £35 million.

That's £346,500 a gig, £173,250 an hour and £2887.50 a minute for a 13-song set. Phew!

A well-placed source said: "Justin signed a deal for $70 million up front before he even started the tour in San Diego in January. He was basically handed a cheque for the amount in full and, even if he pulls out of a gig because of illness or exhaustion he still gets to keep the whole amount.

"His concert promoters banked on all 101 of his gigs selling out and, luckily for them, they did. Unlike some other artists or bands Justin isn't being paid a percentage of ticket sales.

"£35 million is a whopping payday for anybody - it's on the scale of Madonna. Justin has only two albums under his belt but this is a sign of how much of a global superstar he's become."

Yesterday Justin spent the day in a west London recording studio with Timbaland and Madonna.

Things must have gone well as the producer and the Material Girl looked in fine spirits when they emerged late last night.
