Where to draw the line...

Featured Replies

Okay, I'm in a really... thoughtful mood right now. Sorry for the pointless rant. You don't have to reply or anything. I just feel like laying out all my thoughts. Excuse me if I contradict myself, haha. It's a process.... lol.

I know it's a rather large body of text for a message board, but reading it... could be useful, haha.

I was just thinking--is there ever a definitive place to "draw a line" with some issues? Or, is right and wrong "undefined" often?

People debate about things like politics, business, gay marriage, terrorism, whatever....... people have set beliefs about things--people are stubborn bastards.

Thing is, though, that things change... constantly--what you thought before might not be exactly as applicable as the other day, but people will hold on to their pride continue to believe what they believe. That's both good and bad--when is it right or wrong to do that? Do you give up your faith just because something might go against your belief? No. Do you continue to live in ignorance just because you're not willing to believe or understand something else? No............ which brings me to the next thing I was talking about. I was thinking--people want things to be black and white for them, but it's not. It's like getting a bunch of grey paint and trying to separate the black paint and the white paint that it was originally made of--that's kinda... hard... right?

Excuse me for quoting my favorite TV show, but... "I’m sure this goes against everything you’ve been taught, but right and wrong do exist. Just because you don’t know what the right answer is – maybe there’s even no way you could know what the right answer is – doesn’t make your answer right or even okay. It’s much simpler than that. It’s just plain wrong."

This sounds kinda cheesy, but the black and white paint do exist, but sometimes you have no way of finding out what it is if it's all mixed up into a bunch into a bunch of grey matter.

So you can't draw the line dividing black and white when it's all mixed up into a bunch of right and wrong mush. It's beyond our power. We'll continue to debate about things--politics, religion... but no one will find an answer. So... what's the purpose of a debate?--I think a debate isn't about convincing people that you're right and they're wrong, but learning about or gaining someone elses point of view about a certain thing. You might prove a point, but the more important thing is learning something. If you impress your beliefs upon other people, it's only fair to give their beliefs a chance to impress upon you...

The answer to everything exists, but who's to find it out? People? Nah.

I don't know, but that's one of the reasons why I believe in God.

Oh god. I didn't use ANY smilies at all in that last post!

I'm so proud of myself! :laugh3:

congrats then! lol

^hahaha. i spose there are lines for some things, otherwise there would be no such thing as legality.

i think with debates its also about standing up for what you believe in, rather than trying to imprint your views on someone else. thats just my case...

I have a weird approach with debates sometimes.

I'm not trying to condemn then or anything, but I want them to take some of my thoughts into consideration. Really stubborn people aren't fun to debate with.

It's like meeting someone at a fork in a road, and they usually go some way and you go another, but you invite them to walk the other path with you. Really stubborn people won't even try taking the other route. If you do, though, you might find that you love the trail--it's nice and scenic, shady, whatever... you might find that it's much like the path you walk all the time, or you might find that you hate it--you might have a reason and you might not. As an individual, it could just not be appealing to you, or, it could just suck in general--it's challenging, tiring, full of thorns and shiz--why would someone ever want to walk this path? You don't know. Most people would pick the nice and easy route, but a few people have their reasons for going down the not so great route--we call them extremists. It not might be the right path to take in the end, but they've got their reasons... sometimes it's hard to comprehend, but.... yeah.

I don't know what's up with me and the metaphorical language or whatever tonight.

I reckon I could seperate black and white paint from grey if I really had to, but it'd take at least 1000 years.

Friendly debates are about learning different points fo view.

Political or religious or economic debates are about forcing your opinions onto others, which never works, you can gain the majority vote, but not the whole.

And I like debating with stubborn people, coz it is all the sweeter when you win.

^^I love debating, and I feel that I could make some very good points, but the reason why I stay away from debating now is the stubborn people. They are just never considerate of anything and...dear I say it 'big-headed.' There's always the people who are good at debating and will consider some ideas, but the stubborn people always ruin it...and it's not even a debate anymore, it's like a catfight.
