Legend Agassi makes tearful exit

Andre Agassi's 20-year career ended in a 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 5-7 defeat to German qualifier Benjamin Becker at the US Open on Sunday. The 36-year-old was clearly affected by the chronic back injury which hastened his decision to retire.

Backed by a fiercely patriotic crowd, Agassi battled throughout but Becker's power proved too much.

The American legend fought back tears as the Arthur Ashe crowd, along with Becker, rose to applaud him.

Still crying, Agassi paid a sentimental tribute to his fans.

"The scoreboard shows that I lost today, but what it doesn't show is what I found," he said.

"Over the last 20 years I have found loyalty, you have pulled me through on court and also in life.

"I have found inspiration - you have willed me to succeed - and I have found generosity.

"I thank you and I wiill take you and the memory with me for the rest of my life."

Becker kept his nerve brilliantly in front of a crowd who were virtually silent whenever he won a point.

The German afterwards paid tribute to Agassi's contribution to the game.

"He's one of a kind," said the 25-year-old.

"He gave so much to tennis. He's such a gentleman and this is a great moment for him.

"Whatever they do for him he deserves it. I wish him all the best - I know he will be very happy in life."

It' s a sad day for who loves tennis......ANDRE I'LL MISS YOU!!!!!!!!!:bigcry:

Man' date=' i wanted him to win![/quote']

You and pretty much the whole of the States!! But unfortunately his age caught up with him. It wasn't the Andre of old out there.

Still ironic that his career should end at the hands of a "B. Becker" with a booming serve, however.......................... spooky!!:stunned:

Farewell, Andre! The world will miss you!

Maybe he'll return to play some mixed doubles with Steffi one day.;)

Great Andre!!!!

I cried..I wanted him to play vs. Andy..it would have been the best end!

YAY.......The german won...I can't believe it....great...

Yes - it happens so rarely nowadays.;)

However, Agassi was on his last legs, so I wouldn't start celebrating too much if I were you!!:D

Well....I'm sorry for Agassi of course....

but wow....I mean german tennis was not the best the last years...and now that.....a great day for german tennis I'd say...;)

No - I think you'll find it was a fluke. He'll probably lose in the next round, unlike Andy Murray, who's going all the way to the top!!;)

Well......I didn't say that B. Becker is THE top player now....but it was nice to see him winning against a top player...

Well it doesn't really count because Agassi was past it!! Beating him a few years ago would have been a different matter!;)

However....people see Agassi as a legend......so now Mr nobody comes and beats him...I think that's just cool....fact!

I only follow tennis marginally, so, sorry for asking such an ignorant question, but why is it ironic that Agassi lost to a B. Becker?

All anybody was interested in was that it was the end of Agassi's career. Just who beat him was irrelevant.

If this new "Becker" ever beats any top player in his prime, it will be a different matter. I'll be waiting........................... ;)

Andy Murray on the other hand has already beaten Federer, Roddick and Hewitt.;)
