I still think Steve's going to come home, says Irwin's widow

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's wife Terri told for the first time today how she still expects him to walk in through the door from one of his adventures, revealing that 'every day he was my prince charming.'

 

 

Mrs Irwin said in an interview to be aired on Australia's Channel Nine network tomorrow: 'There never has been before and never will be again another Steve Irwin.'

 

 

And she revealed how she first learned the news of his death while she was on holiday in Tasmania with her two children, Bindi, eight and Bob, two.

 

Close family friend and Irwin's manager John Stainton – who tried to revive the 'wildlife warrior' after he was stabbed through the heart by a stingray earlier this month - rang her and said: 'There's been a diving accident with Steve.'

 

 

She added in the interview that she thought: 'Don't say it, don't say it, don't say it – and he said it. He said those three words "and he died".

 

 

'I'm still at the stage where I think he's going to come home. And it didn't really happen.'

 

 

Mrs Irwin said she has found it hard to cope but considers herself lucky to have received such support and thanked the public for their 'thoughts and prayers.'

 

 

Referring to the emotionally-charged memorial service last week, when Bindi described Mr Irwin as 'my hero’, Mrs Irwin said: 'He would have said "Crikey, mate, I can’t believe this."’

 

 

Millions of fans across Australia and New Zealand are expected to tune into the hour-long tv special today.

 

 

In a separate interview for America’s ABC to be screened later today, Mrs Irwin tells Barbara Walters how she is coping 'one minute at a time – sometimes an hour at a time with great faith, great determination.'

terri's exclusive interview is on tonight in australia, channel 9. it's the first time she will publicly talk about it. if you can watch it, definitely try.

 

after last week's emotinal memorial service, i feel a sense of closure and freedom to move on. it's what everyone should start doing, just like his dad said: let's stop morning steve, just mourn for the animals who have lost the best friend they ever had.

(btw, this is only my opinion but if it's possible, could we keep all croc hunter threads to just one thread, because we've got a lot going and it's frustrating to keep up with, but again, just my personal opinion.
