Whens the last time you rode a bike?

Featured Replies

^that sounds like it would be great! i would use it if they had it.

but i live in a pretty rural area (well, it's on the line between rural and suburban), so unless you want to bike for hours and hours, you can't get ANYWHERE but to more houses and more trees. and i didn't go to a public school, so my friends didn't live in my town, even. most of my friends were over 10 miles away, and my school was 12 miles from my house. even if there were nice bike paths, there wouldn't be anywhere to feasibly get to on them :(

last time i rode a bike was about .5 of a mile down the road this summer to my neighbor's house (a husband and wife who also happen to be my former history and english teachers...) to feed their cats while they were on holiday. a car cut too close to me and i felt like i had to bail off, so i did...and my legs were spliced open on the back by the pedals. needless to say, i still have the scars.

the time before that was christmas 2000, when i got the bike. my brother and i took our brand-new bikes out to the driveway to try them out, and i promptly broke his arm by bumping him from the back and making him fly over the handlebars. made me not want to touch the thing for a good 7 years.

Goodness, those must have been awful experiences. I have my fair share of scares due to bike riding, but I have to say they really don't compare to that. But that incident in 2000 sounds really unlucky! You must have bumped into him pretty hard for that to happen.

Its odd though, because all of my accidents were not due to any obvious causes, like riding with no hands. I managed to slice open my forearm on the edge of a neighbour's brick wall while jumping up onto the pavement at high speed, so I didn't have enough time to make a sharp turn. Haha, that was pretty painful. And then there was the time there was something wrong with the brakes and the road was quite muddy so i did a sharp brake and the back wheel lifted off the ground. I did a sort of jump to make sure i didnt land head first, and ended up hand first on the road, which cause quite a nasty gash in that fatty part of your palm. It wasn't nice trying to remove parts of the road from it I can tell you.

aw, those sound pretty awful too! mine were just more scary than painful (for me, anyway), but those sound like they REALLY hurt. the things with my legs were just obnoxious to look at really: i had bandaids (usually neon-colored ones because that's all we had ) up and down the back of my legs for months so people wouldn't see the hideous gashes, but in retrospect the gashes were probably better-looking than the electric pink and green bandaids. picking bits of pavement out of your hand...*shudder*

yes, the thing with my brother kept me off of bikes in any form for seven years. to this day everyone insists that it wasn't me that did it, but i distinctly remember hitting his back wheel...eek. i learned to ride a bike quite late though (i live in a really hilly area, so you don't see bikes too often anyway), so i don't have as much experience with them as other people do, and therefore less accidents. i'm just so accident prone that out of the maybe 8 times i've ridden a bike, 2 of them have involved accidents.

now if we were talking about ice-skating and ice-skating accidents...ooh, do i have some stories :P

Ice skating sounds a lot more dangerous than riding a bike in my my opinion, only because it involves blades instead of wheels. And I think I've only been skating 3 times in my life, so I havn't had any nasty accidents, although I've had a couple of close calls.

But do tell, Chelsea.

not to hiijack a thread, but since you asked...:P :sneaky:

well, ice hockey is HUGE in my family and i've been skating since i was about three, so i've had lots of time to have nasty accidents. i've slit open my leg with my own skate a fair number of times, torn some clothes, and gotten a bit of a skate-to-the-face on one occasion (though that wasn't too bad--i've heard worse stories). i also broke (well, seriously injured) my tailbone at my 11th birthday by being knocked over by a friend who couldn't skate properly.

my brothers and my dad have some worse stories, though, of major concussions and stitches and all sorts of stuff. i suppose that's what they get, playing hockey 5 days a week. my brother once SLEPT with his new skates in bed with him because loved them so much, and surprisingly did not end up finely minced.

but the grossest part about hockey-related injuries is that...blood bounces on ice. well, a little. it's not like a superball or anything, but it kind of skips a little on the surface before landing.

Wow didn't see you post this earlier, but your experiences sound... interesting. I suppose the danger side of it isn't enough to put people off though, until something like what you said actually happens. I know that ice hockey is practically suicide anyway, so injuries from tht sport hardly surprise me :P That story about you're brother sleeping in his skates was quite funny though.

Bouncing blood eh? Reminds me of one of those Goosebumps stories by RL Stein :P Loved those books.

hockey is not suicide!! it's the best sport there is

now lacrosse, that's suidide. more injuries in that sport than any other, at least in my experience. my friend almost died last year.

Oh shit! Nearly died? Thats awful. Lacrosse is probably worse in that case (the sport with the sticks with nets?). I was over exaggerating when I said ice hockey is suicide though, I know they always exaggerate sports in movies... I've never seen a REAL ice hockey game before, so I wouldn't really know.

I think anything taken to the extreme can be dangerous, just because we're pushing ourselves to the edge.. I once rode a bike down a steep hill, and attained a speed of over 70 mph (the speedometer was pegged half-way down) - luckily, no injuries (I had absolutely no padding on..).:biker:

Lacrosse is done without protection?? I know the sport, but can't recall..

p1_lacrosse_0425.jpg

=lacrosse. not NEARLY enough padding/protection for the amount of shit you get into. and making physically whacking another player as hard as you can with an aluminum rod WITHIN THE RULES doesn't make matters better. at least in hockey there are rules, and when you bodyslam (check) someone, you've got enough padding on and you can slide away on the ice.

my friend got knocked under the chin with the stick and his head separated from his neck. we all thought he was paralyzed from the neck down for several hours. and then in next week's game, someone was knocked unconscious and someone on the other team broke both their arms. i get very worried about my friends when i watch games. cool sport, though, i guess. i forgot its pretty much a northeast american thing. it's virtually unheard of in some parts of the country.

you have to see a hockey game someday!

Cor blimey, now that does sound dangerous. You're friend's injury sounds very serious. Has he recovered from that?

And yeah, ice hockey seems exciting, when played professionally at least. I don't think I would never play it though. I'll stick with football (which I suck at btw) ;)

he's recovered, but he's also turned into a complete asshole. i sometimes wonder if the injury was related :P

hockey's fun to play and is the only sport besides volleyball that i have any remote ability in whatsoever but that's just because i grew up in a hockey household. i'm also the most unathletic person that ever lived, so i just like watching my brother and my dad and NHL, mostly. football...i got completely addicted to the FIFA world cup two summers ago. it was ridiculous.

soooo...how about them bicycles? :D

Haha, both fortunate and unfortunate at the same time i guess. I least he's alive.

And I'd have to disagree - I'm the most un-athletic person alive, haha. the last time I played any kind of sport was 3 years ago, at least.

Back on topic:

the difference is that you were probably good at them when you did them. me, i have no skill or even motivation. i don't care who wins; just get me out of there faster so i can go read or listen to music or something.

HAHAHA! is that bird ACTUALLY riding a little bike?!

old_fashioned_bicycle.jpg

i have no idea how people used to get on these, let alone ride them.

we still ride those in finland

^Haha no idea, just thought is was amusing.

And I don't how people can even get on those things without toppling over, let alone ride them.

Edit: turns out great minds think alike. And i didn't even see that sentence under the picture haha!

you DON'T! do you?! duuuude.

i have no idea am i supposed to answer this question but yes, we really do. We're just left behind. No one ever gave us proper bikes :(

haha, your wording is almost identical to mine! :P

now THIS is a kick-ass bike:

Haha! Are you sure thats not computer generated? That is awesome though
