Amsterdam?

Featured Replies

Hi, I hope this is in the right section, I ran a search but did not find anything relating to this question.

Anyway, I was wondering, has Chris or anyone ever mentioned the meaning behind the lyrics of Amsterdam in any interviews? I'm not sure, but I was just wondering what the meaning could be. I know the meanings of most songs aren't really revealed but I was just wondering if the band has talked about this song. Thanks!

I've never heard them mention anything about Amsterdam. I would like to know too! It's a great song. I always thought it was about drugs. That's how I interpret it...

Interesting that you see it as being about drugs. I always thought it reminded me of being saved by something, like a person, love, or religion? I guess the meaning of the song depends on who is listening. That's why I was wondering about what meaning Chris intended for it. :)

I've been dying to know- Amsterdam's my favorite Coldplay song.

Amsterdam

According to the words, as for me they're related to drugs :

"And I swerve out of control

And I swear I waited and waited

I've got to get out of this hole"

"Of this ball and chain

And I'm on my way back down again

Stood on the edge

Tied to the noose

Sick to the stomach

You can say what you mean

But it won't change a thing

I'm sick of the secrets

Stood on the edge

Tied to the noose

But you came along and you cut me loose

You came along and you cut me loose... (x3)

In Amsterdam, people can get drug very easily. It's renowned.

i've always thought "Amsterdam" was about someone who is really really desperate.

someone who does not see a way out of their problems.

so... he/she wants to commit suicide ("stood on the edge...") and eventually gets saved by someone. someone who does care. someone who does love the person.

doesn't amsterdam have the highest suicide rate compared to other european cities or is that just an urban myth?

sure, the song's called "Amsterdam" because it was written there...

[btw. it's my favourite coldplay song!]

Yeah but if you think about it it's not like Chris had problems with drugs!!

i don't think it's about drugs either.

i bet chris had some pot in his younger days, but i highly doubt he was addicted or something like that.

WOoW.... Congratulations for that interpretation. everybody knows Amsterdam is a city very influence for all drugs. well I congratulate to you for that ^^.

now that you say I think the same

I find it's one of those songs that's both vague and direct enough to have multiple valid interpretations.

The way I always interpreted it was that someone got themselves into some trouble and someone else could have walked away but came back to save them instead.

Looking really closely at the lyrics, and going with the assumption that like most of the songs written during that particular point in time it was about breaking up with his girlfriend, I end up with something quite different, though. I think I may have something on that actually... I'll check.

its only named Amsterdam because Chris wrote it while he was in Amsterdam. Otherwise it has no bearing on the meaning of the lyrics.

Amsterdam

Thank's, Ryan, i didn't know that.

The rate of suicides in Amsterdam are not higher than anywhere else, it's a gossip. I have lived in the Netherlands two years.

i don't think it's about drugs either.

Oh BS. Coldplays contract specifically says that any member who uses cocaine will be kicked out of the band.

For them to single out a particular drug, you know there was a problem at some point.

its only named Amsterdam because Chris wrote it while he was in Amsterdam. Otherwise it has no bearing on the meaning of the lyrics.

According to Debs, that is the official reason.

Yeah, I heard that too.

i'm interested too:) i love amsterdam, why? because it's very coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooold:)

well... this is just me, but i interpereted it as...

this guy did something really bad, and he ran away from it, so they thought he was the causer of what happened, and he's going to get executed. but instead, a witness of the accident comes along and tells what really happened at the accident or scene, or whatever.

i absolutley love this song, it's one of my favorites, so if anyone finds an interview or something, please post itt!

well in my opinion its about someone who had a great loss or felt really lonely and depressed, you know how that can take over you and it shows how hard it is to get well again, might get to a point when you feel useless and abandoned until this special person came into his/her life and changed everything, someone nice and caring who got to love him and he felt this warmth which finally helped him out becuase he trusted this person.

thats what I think.. maybe im wrong, hope we can find out someday it'll be interesting.

It's a myth...this song was written in Iceland (probably Reykjavik, as that's the only big settelment on Iceland as far as I know)

The drugs idea might be right, especially abroad our capital (I am Dutch) is renowned for its policy towards drugs.

Actually, many foreigners misinterpretate the Dutch drugs policy. Using soft-drugs is officially forbidden, the Dutch government does nothing about it though. Using hard drugs or trading any kind of drugs IS prohibited and you can be caught for that. (Sorry if I just blew up someone's dream)
