Handball world cup in Germany

Featured Replies

It wasn't me who said it was fixed!!

My point about Iceland stands, and I've now found out that handball is almost exclusively played within Europe (with a few exceptions, e.g. Tunisia because of its connection with France).

So world cup or championships is actually a total misnomer as far as handball is concerned.;)

Russia has always been counted as a European country for some reason (it has always been included in European championships of various sports).

Tunisia, Angola, Morocco and Egypt presumably only play it because of their historical French connections.

Does anyone actually live in Greenland??:P

Qatar and Kuwait aren't exactly massive countries, are they?

That leaves Australia, Brazil, Argentina and South Korea, which are admittedly sizeable nations, but I'd be interested to know how "big" handball is in those countries.

However - there are hardly any Asian teams, no African teams other than those with strong links with France, no USA or Canada, and no members of the Commonwealth other than Australia.;)

You say Russia has always been counted as a European country, but it isn’t situated in Europe.

The reason why you hardly don't find any Asian teams is that except South Korea no other teams were qualified for this tournament.

Honestly, I guess in relation to Qatar and Kuwait you were running out of arguments…

So countries like Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt aren’t countries of another continent, because they were former colonies of France?! Come on… So if I would have named the USA you wouldn’t accept it, because there have been former British colonies in the East of America? It’s completely unnecessary for me to continue this discussion…

PS: Angola was Portuguese not French.

it's not a FIXED sport, it's just a sport where judges have a lot more important role to play.nothing more. don't generalise or twist my words.you're doing it all the time on this board.

anyway..Larry and Julia don't get mad at me please..... :(

I don't make the rules............................

Or maybe because they don't really take the sport seriously.

In terms of global team sports, they're insignificant, like Iceland.;)

I was merely pointing out why handball probably came to be played there.

Come on… So if I would have named the USA you wouldn’t accept it, because there have been former British colonies in the East of America?

Completely irrelevant.

Still influenced by a European colonial power.;)

Well that isn't good for any sport, as it means there's more chance of decisions being "influenced".

well...you have that in every single sport, more or less. should we all stop watching and supporting sport?

You're the one who brought it up, not me!!

no, i brought up one case. you're the one who generalised it all the way.

GERMANY IS WORLD CHAMPION 2007!!! a049.gifa049.gifa049.gif

Ahhhhhhhhhh, I can't believe it! 29:24 win over Poland! What a game, what a brilliant game, although it was absolutely not as exciting as against France. The atmosphere in Cologne is incredible! :nice: And we're also qualified for Olympia next near in China!

1938, 1978, 2007

:)

Well done Germany!

It was a good final game. I'm enjoying the ceremony thing atm..

Yay......we woooooooooooooooooooooooooon....

Congratulations on winning a meaningless, insignificant competition.:dozey:

Russia gets counted as a part of Europe, because it's capital city (Moscow) is in Europe.

It's a similar story with Turkey.

It's a similar story with Turkey.

It's still daft for the whole of Russia to be considered within Europe, though. Some of it is farther east than China, for Pete's sack!!

As for Turkey, that's a difficult one to categorise.

loool.

i knew it.

i think everyone knew it.

don't wanna sound all stuck-up, but everyone thought we were gonna win...

however... YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!

loved mr Köhler wearing the poland scarf though :D

Russia is counted as both in Asia and Europe.

It's a transcontinental country:

An example is Russia, which has its historical core as well as most of its population (75%), economic activity and political institutions (such as its capital city) in Europe, yet geographically most of the territory (75%) is actually in Asia. By most definitions, Russia straddles in Eurasia.

Thank you so much!

Congratulations for winning completely nothing! :smug:

The atmosphere is incredible! Nearly every tv-channel here has mentioned it with special shows. I will definitely watch the celebration in Cologne in a few minutes. I guess tomorrow everyone will have his German flag on his car again.
