Abortion

Featured Replies

you said it's mother's body and she decides and i said it's innocent baby's life and we should not decide whether or not s/he should live.. that's all brother

i see your point.

apparently the woman will have to make the final decision as its her who'll be looking for the kid, especially if she isnt in a relationship with the child's father. however its an issue for the man as well because he's the father after all. if he wants the child to be born this can be very disturbing for him too.

i know a woman who aborted a child when she was 23. she was at uni and becoming a mother wasnt quite what she wanted at the time, she also didnt have any support from her unborn kid's father at all. shes in her forties now and she's still suffering from that now.

so some people do see things different once they get older. i'm not saying abortion should be forbidden but i do think some people dont really know what it means for someone to abort a child. this can seriously be psychologically disturbing for the child's mother.

yes, you're right.. in fact there may be some possible solutions to that "unwanted" babies for example society/state may take the responsibility to take care of the child or as i said before, it would be acceptable if the foetus hasn't developed enough to become a living creature..

i can feel the difficulties that a mother/father (especially mother) can experience, but there are consequences of some faults (yes i meant that- they did a wrong thing and they may suffer)

i pretty much agree with you. i mean theres still a very low cance to get pregnant if you use contraception. i personally still would feel guilty if i aborted a child, i dont i'd have the right to decide about my unborn child's life. and also how can we know when the foetus has develped enough to be a living creature?

but i think that everyone has to make their own decision, so i dont think there should be a law which forbids abortion.

... and also how can we know when the foetus has develped enough to be a living ceature?

experts, i think, have idea when its time it becomes a living human.. it was 12 / 22 weeks or so, i can't remember now

i'm still undecided in this issue.. i don't know.. if i said there shouldn't be laws about it, then i would say something conflicts with my previous opinion (i said its murder in the case that mother does not want the baby and aborts it)

so i put a blank here :)

you know, i'm only 21 now and i have some time :P kidding..

i feel the same. but thats my personal view and i dont wanna judge people who have different opnion on this. but i personally could never do it. unless if i was raped maybe, not even sure about that.

haha! i'm 21 too and i'm not planing to have a child any time soon. but its something everyone (especially women apparently) should think about because theres a low chance to get pregnant if you have sex.

agreed!

i voted for the first time yesterday and voted yes...i don't want to see women judged and abortion treated as a crime...these women would go to court and answer to a lot of personal questions, dealing with a difficult situation at the same time....we didn't have any women in jail due to abortion but these judgements were embarassing for women in my opinion...also the current law didn't work, abortion was a crime but no judge put these women in jail...so the law didn't work, period.

also, in portugal we had about 18000 abortions a year...these abortions were done in the most awful conditions...damaging the women forever...i heard one doctor saying he was shocked by the state of some women who went to the hospital after...some even died. and simultaneously we had people rich enough to go to spain and do an abortion in safe conditions...4000 portuguese women every year i heard.

so to say "yes" yesterday would mean giving all women the same right and also to make sure that if this is what they wanted, then it would be done with all the possible dignity.

i'm also convinced that some of these women that want to abort, going to a hospital and listening to a friendly voice may even reconsider and not doing it...women were alone before, feeling completly lonely because it was considered a crime so they couldn't even go to a hospital to get advice on whether they should do it or not

like sally said: i think i would never do it but that's my personal belief...everyone should do what they think it's best for themselves

agreed!

Couldn't have put it better myself. Well done!! That's what people forget - just because they're declared "illegal" it doesn't stop abortions happening. They are just forced "underground", as you said, and that can carry great risks for the women concerned.

Therefore people need to get "real", and fortunately, the Portuguese have.

i think it depends on the individual and the situations involved, personally I wouldn't have an abortion, but then again, how do I know how I would feel then, would be how I feel now?

Abortion should be a womans prerogative.

Period.

I disagree, but that doesn't matter. what if the guy doesn't want a baby and the girl does? should he have any responsibility to take care of it? Why is it only the girl's decision? And vice versa, what if the guy wants a baby and he can't have one because the girl aborts it? What gives her the right to tell him no? Sure, she carries it, but that's not the guy's fault that girls are the ones with wombs. It's not a decision we made, so what makes it a girl's right to take advantage of that?

abortion may only be acceptable -in my opinion- if the baby is a danger for the mom's health or foetus is not yet developed enough (i dont know the exact time when its enough)

if mother does not want the baby i cannot see any difference if it weren't a baby but a 12 year-old(for instance) child.. its murder..

I agree with this, but I wouldn't compare it to a 12 year old. I would compare it to a 1 year old. People don't have memories from when they're 1 year old because at that stage in life they have the learning capacity of a chimpanzee. But murdering a 1 year old is somehow (obviously) wrong unlike killing an under-developed baby who may simply have less capacity.

If a person was fully grown and all someone had to do was press a button to bring them to life from complete unconsciousness, but they had the choice to either kill them or press the button and the person with the choice chose to kill them, it would be murder. If it's a baby who can't comprehend just yet, but will in a few years, then it's not murder. I don't see the logic there.
