OAP couple who scooped £2.4m on Lottery are going to buy... new knees

An OAP couple who scooped £2.4m on the lottery plan to celebrate their win - with knee replacement operations.

Retired cabbie Tony Dodds, 67, and his wife Greta, 69, have both decided to use their windfall to pay for private surgery.

The couple, from Wallasey, Merseyside, also plan to buy a new house - and won't have to worry about struggling up the stairs.

Golf fan Mr Dodd said he was already looking forward to bounding up the dunes of nearby Royal Birkdale next year when the course hosts the 2008 Open Golf Championship.

The Dodds scooped a share of the Lotto jackpot in Saturday's Rollover draw.

Their winning numbers of 3, 10, 21, 25, 29 and 49 were a combination of birthdays and house numbers.

Mr Dodd said he planned to buy a new house but wanted to stay in Wallasey.

"We are absolutely delighted with the win and it means we can really enjoy our retirement. We haven't really thought about how we are going to celebrate," he said.

"But it's a wonderful feeling knowing that we can do what we want whenever we want. If I want to go and watch the Golf Open Championship, I can."

He added he didn't realise he was sitting on a fortune until Monday.

"Greta and I had been to see our daughter Jane, and when we got back home, I remembered we had the Lotto tickets in the car, so I thought I would take them inside and check them.

"We were sat in the kitchen and I put Teletext on to check the numbers. I said to Greta 'I think we've won'. She didn't believe it at first so she had to check the ticket herself.

"The news has not really sunk in yet for any of us."
