Viewing figures for the current series of Big Brother have hit an all-time low.

The series, which ends this week, is attracting an average audience of 3.8million - almost one million fewer than last year.

When the reality show made its debut on Channel 4 in 2000, around half a million more were tuning in.

The station has already decided to cancel the spin-off series Celebrity Big Brother following this year's damaging race row involving contestants Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty.

The latest figures fuelled speculation about the future of the original show.

Even among its hardcore audience of 16 to 34-year-olds, it has plummeted in popularity this summer.

It has fallen from a 40 per cent share in 2006 and a high point of 50 per cent in 2002 to just 30 per cent of viewers in this age group.

Big Brother's profitability has also been hit by the broadcaster's decision to stop making money from phone-in votes, which was taken after the recent scandals over TV competition scams.

Insiders claim Channel 4 is so reliant on the programme to attract young viewers that it may hang on to the show for as long as possible.

But there has been talk of it moving to its smaller digital channel E4.

A Channel 4 spokesman said: "Big Brother remains one of our most popular programmes and, like any long-running series, its audience varies each run.

"It consistently beats its slot average and attracts a huge number of young, upmarket viewers.

"It is evidence of Big Brother's enduring appeal that this series is watched by almost 4million viewers - an audience all broadcasters would be thrilled with."

It's tired and crappy and needs to be put to bed!!

^You shouldn't need a reason not too watch it!
