OJ Simpson 'is facing time' over Las Vegas armed robbery

Last updated at 10:37am on 17th September 2007 OJ Simpson faces the rest of his life behind bars if he is convicted for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery at a Las Vegas hotel.

The former American football star, who was acquitted in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife, was arrested and held without bail for robbing a sports memorabilia seller of what he claims were his personal belongings.

Handcuffed and dressed in a golf shirt and jeans, Simpson, 60, was led away from The Palms casino hotel by plainclothes officers after the arrest of a friend who police say accompanied him with a gun during the hold-up on Thursday night.

Clark county district attorney David Roger said: "He is facing a lot of time."

The arrest marks the start of a new legal saga for the fallen sports star turned actor who was sensationally cleared of killing his former wife and her friend after a televised trial.

Simpson spent the night at the county detention centre and was charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime and burglary with a firearm.

The incident is thought to have happened after an auctioneer friend of Simpson's alerted him to items being sold from a room at the Palace Station hotel in Las Vegas.

They included his Hall of Fame certificate and a photograph taken of him with the former FBI director J Edgar Hoover.

Simpson then went to the room with several friends - two of whom were allegedly armed.

According to witnesses, the situation rapidly descended into chaos. The auctioneer, Thomas Riccio, said: "OJ got really emotional and things got kind of nutty."

Simpson claims that he and friends were retrieving items that belonged to him and that there were no guns involved.

Speaking to a reporter at the Palms hotel on Saturday evening, he said: "I'm OJ Simpson. How am I going to think that I'm going to rob somebody and get away with it? This is somebody going to get his private [belongings] back. That's it. That's not robbery."

He added: "I don't hang out with gangsters - I hang out with golfers."

Simpson also said that he did not call the police to help reclaim the items because he has found them unresponsive to him ever since his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, were killed in 1994.

"The police, since my trouble, have not worked out for me,î he said. Whenever he has called the police "it just becomes a story about OJ".

Police said they seized two firearms involved in the robbery and sports memorabilia, mostly signed by Simpson.

This is not his first time the star has had a run-in with the law after his acquittal in 1995.

He has been accused of assaulting a photographer, received a speeding ticket for driving his speedboat too fast on a Florida waterway, been investigated in connection with the pirating of satellite television signals, questioned by police after a domestic incident reported by his girlfriend and investigated in connection with a money-laundering scheme and a drugs ring.

The latest arrest came as the Goldman family published a book that Simpson has written under the title If I Did It. It tells how he would have murdered his ex-wife and Goldman - had he actually done it.

i hope he goes to jail for life and finally admits to killing his wife
