Posh and the Spice Girls disappoint fans by lip-synching at reunion gig

The Spice Girls took to the stage together for the first time in almost 10 years - but disappointed fans by miming their songs.

Despite masses of hype surrounding their reunion, the Girls had clearly not prepared enough to sing live at the Victoria's Secret fashion show at the Kodak Theatre, Hollywood, last night.

They performed two songs, the first was a rendition of their classic Stop, dressed in military clothes and with male dancers. The second was their new Children In Need track Headlines.

While Stop had some ambitious choreography, Headlines had no dancing - making the lip-synching unacceptable.

One person at the show said: "It was amazing to see them back on stage again.

"They obviously put a lot of work into their dance routines, but it was disappointing they didn't sing live."

"The girls kick off their world tour on 2 December in Vancouver, but it's unclear whether they plan to sing live during any of those shows.

But Ryan Seacrest, the host of Simon Cowell's American Idol show was more than happy. He said after the show: "I'm in love with Victoria Beckham, which is probably an issue for David."

"They could have stood there and done nothing and I'd have been happy," he said of the group's performance.

"They were fantastic," said one fan. "It's like they've never been away and they all look simply stunning."

Did the girls enjoy themselves? "It's very emotional to be back on stage together, it evokes a lot of memories," said 31-year-old Emma Bunton.

Meanwhile the Spice Girls most recent greatest hits album is being trounced by X Factor winner Leona Lewis in the charts, and after last night's performance, some people may be regretting the hundreds of pounds they've spent to see them live.

Great costumes and energetic dance routines are guaranteed. But will we get the chance to hear their voices a decade on?

Tonight the girls will do a live link from LA during the Children In Need event, but one person who's not overly excited about seeing them is Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips.

She told us the girls should have moved forward with their sound, and that their new single is stuck in the past.

She said: "I think they are Spice Women now, and not the Spice Girls. I think their whole attack should have been about not what they were, but where they are now."

Nearly a decade after the five-member group became four — when Geri Halliwell left Mel C, Mel B, Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham — the Spice Girls reunited for a greatest hits album, released this week, and a world reunion tour, starting in Vancouver on Dec. 2.

Mel C admitted the girls were "nervous".

She said: "It's quite surreal, but everything has come flooding back, all of the songs, and being with each other and rehearsing together, it just feels very comfortable.

"We have got nothing to prove. We just want to come back and live out the good old days."

Mel dismissed rumours of diva-like antics and in-fighting as a "load of c***."

She said: "We've never been divas.

"Our reputation in the business is that we all work very hard and we know that we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for everybody who was involved in our project."

Earlier this week LA-based Posh posted a new message on the girl group's official blog giving fans an update on the reunion tour preparations - and a glimpse of how husband David and the boys are coping with her hectic schedule.

Posh wrote: "I'm currently sat in our rehearsal studio and I am about to have another fitting with the Cavalli team for our costumes.

"The other girls will kill me if I give anything away and I don't want to ruin any surprises... but they look amazing! Roberto and his team have done us proud.

"Rehearsals are going really well, I can't believe that there are only a few weeks until the first show in Vancouver.

"It's really scary but exciting at the same time. "David and the boys have been laughing at me because I've been wandering around the house listening to my iPod and practising the routines.

"We are including some parts of the old routines but bringing them up to date a bit.

"All of the kids have been down to rehearsals. We have an area where they all hang out... its a Spice creche!"

spicegirls8AP_468x326.jpgHardest working: Mel C said the Spice Girls have never been divas and that they all work very hard

She said: "Ugly Betty was shown over here in the US on Friday, I had such a laugh filming it. If you're in the UK then you will be able to see the episode on Channel 4 at 9pm on Friday 23 November.

"Friday is BBC Children In Need day in the UK and we will performing from LA. We will be doing two songs, our new single Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) and also Stop - which is going to look fantastic.

"I can't give too much away but it's definitely going to be worth watching."

And in other news, Scary Spice was voted into the final four of the US version of Strictly Come Dancing, and is one of the hot favourites to lift the Mirror Ball trophy.

She is joined in the last four by singer Marie Osmond, actress Jennie Garth and Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves.

Mel, 33, showed she hadn't lost any of her scary ways when asked what she would do if she didn't get through.

She jokingly said: "I'm going to beat them all up!"

Besides the spectacle of the reunited Spice Girls, there was plenty to see onstage at the Kodak Theatre, home of the Academy Awards.

The Victoria's Secret models, who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week, sported a series of animal-inspired lingerie looks, as barely there bras and panties were accessorized with plumage, skins and antlers seen usually only in the Serengeti.

While the Spice Girls were pretending to sing last night, model Heidi Klum and her husband Seal wowed the audience with a LIVE duet. The German stunner showed up the girls as she belted out Seal's song Wedding Day with her soul-singing husband.

One onlooker said: "The Spice Girls were trying to be models, while Heidi was just relaxed and actually has a great voice."

Seal, outfitted head to toe in glittering silver, crooned, "You're my angel, you're my girl," in a duet with wife Klum that culminated in a lingering kiss at the base of the catwalk.

The Black Eyed Peas' William Adams, also known as will.i.am, started the show with the fitting rap hook: "Baby, where you get your body from?".

Adams was a last-minute stand-in for hip-hop star Kanye West whose mother died earlier in the week.

Prime time mime? Spice Girls back in black for Childen in Need

Last updated at 12:23pm on 17th November 2007 commentIconSm.gif Comments (14)

The Spice Girls appeared on TV screens last night for the first time in nearly ten years but their performance left viewers wondering if they had mimed their way through it.

The girl band performed their new single Headlines and former hit Stop for the Children in Need marathon TV event - but it was unclear whether they were singing or miming.

The five stars wowed the audience in their glamorous black evening wear and sexy sailor outfits via videolink to the show.

A spokesman for the band said: "The girls were never asked to perform live as their performance was recorded for the TV show.

"But rest assured the girls will be fully live for their opening tour date on December 2."

Earlier this week the group performed together for the first time since 1998 and they mimed throughout.

The girls were earlier criticsed for miming at a fashion show for lingerie brand Victoria's Secret on Thursday.

Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm squeezed into tight-fitting 1940s military outfits to play at the Hollywood fashion show.

The two-song gig, on Thursday, was a warm-up for the girls' sell-out world tour, which starts in Vancouver on December 2.

But while the crowd certainly heard the music to 1998 hit Stop and current single Headlines, they were left to wonder about the girls' vocals. Disappointed fan Amanda Peel, 20, said: "They should have used their own voices. It is the least fans deserve."

A band spokesman said the girls had mimed because the show was being recorded for TV.
