Jay-Z Confirmed For Glastonbury 2008

Michael Eavis has confirmed that the mystery “black American” headliner of Glastonbury will be Jay-Z.

Speaking to BBC Somerset Eavis revealed that he had booked the Rap star in an attempt to break with Glastonbury tradition.

He said: "He will appeal to the young people and under-25s for sure, so that's a big pull for them.

"It's not like the traditional one we do, like Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse and Oasis."

Jay-Z joins Neil Diamond on the bill for the festival which takes place over the weekend of June 27-29.

Registration for Glastonbury tickets opened today (February 1) and fans have until March 15 to lodge their interest before tickets go on sale on April 6.

O Really?

I remember the days when I actually wanted to attend Glastonbury.

This year ain't lookin' too good, to be honest.

But then, even if you don't like the main headliner, you can always go to another stage.

Prince replacing Jay-Z at Glastonbury?

160x120_Prince.jpg

Prince may replace Jay-Z at this year's Glastonbury Festival should the rapper drop out, The Sun claims.

Festival boss Michael Eavis was close to getting Prince to headline the festival in 2004 and has seen both Kylie Minogue and Coldplay turn down the chance to top the bill at this summer's event, held from June 27-29.

Rumours surfaced yesterday that Jay-Z was unhappy with organisers for blaming him for a decline in ticket sales.

Glastonbury was thought to be the rapper's only UK festival appearance this year but he is now playing the O2 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park on July 3.

Some ticket holders are upset because they wanted to attend Glastonbury specifically to see Jay-Z.

An insider said: "Obviously they [the organisers] still hoped it could be sorted out, which they still do. But there will be people who bought tickets for the festival because they wanted to see Jay-Z.

"If the Glastonbury organisers let people do that while knowing there were doubts then that seems unfair.

"When he does announce he is not playing, those people should be entitled to full refunds."

Mirror.co.uk exclusive: Jay-Z WILL play Glastonbury

Glastonbury Festival organiser Emily Eavis has called Mirror.co.uk to quash once and for all the rumours surrounding Jay-Z headlining this year’s bash.

Despite what her dad Michael Eavis has branded “malicious gossip” that the hip hop legend was considering pulling out of the festival, Emily insisted Jay, real name Shawn Carter, was still on the bill.

She told us: “I spoke to his production people yesterday and everyone is gung-ho and totally upbeat about Jay’s appearance here. Obviously, there’s been a lot of hoo-ha about it elsewhere, but the response we’ve had from the public has been incredible.

“We’re just so excited that we’re having a legend on the farm and the overwhelming reaction we’ve had has been really positive, there’s a real buzz. But we’ve been coming up against some underlying ill-feeling from certain quarters that we don’t really understand.”

She insisted: “Who wouldn’t want the greatest living hip hop artist playing? When he comes onstage and sings 99 Problems the whole place will go absolutely mental.”

“If we’d just had Radiohead or Coldplay or whatever on again there would have been criticism that we hadn’t moved on.”

Reports began surfacing that Jay-Z might scrap his appearance at Glastonbury when it was announced that he would also be playing this year’s Wireless Festival on 3 July, but Emily states categorically that they are completely unfounded.

Emily also revealed that ticket sales for Glastonbury were well underway again following the re-opening of registration for tickets yesterday afternoon.

Emily said: “It’s been a really great response, quite overwhelming. We think some people just didn’t know about registration, or they just thought they didn’t have a chance of buying a ticket even if they did.”

She continued: “I think as a result, what we’re going to end up with is the most amazing Glastonbury crowd ever who really want to be there.”

Some 30,000 tickets were still available when they went on sale again at 4.30pm yesterday and Emily is confident they will sell out within the next couple of weeks, or when the full festival line-up is announced on 1 May.

She also revealed that work had already started preparing Worthy Farm for the event, which takes place 27-29 June near Pilton in Somerset and also features other confirmed headliners The Verve and Kings Of Leon.
