Can you play Region 1 DVDs in the UK?

Featured Replies

Is there any software available that enables me to play a Region 1 DVD in the UK?

On a dvd player? or on your computer?

If you are using a dvd player, you need to either give it in to a store that does this for you, or you can try to search the internet. Some players are easier to make region free than others.

If you are doing it on your computer I'm not quite sure, I know that you can change the region setting in for example Windows Media player a set number of times. A question wheter you want to change the region should pop up when you insert the region 1 dvd, but I'm sure there are some programs that lets you play region 1 dvd all the time.

Of course, a good 30% of my dvd collection is region 1's, so much that I shelved out for a multi-regional dvd player (18 quid from amazon, plus a free dvd)

Yes it might only be 20 quid, but it has played everything I have asked it to play, the controller might be a bit cheap, but for 20 quid, coming with a year's warranty, for a multi-regional is good value for money, and when it comes with Pal encoding.

For the computer, you can change the settings by going into the advance menu of your dvd drive.

Generally, if the dvd player is from the cheap end of the market (under £30), so it is mass-made in a country like china for worldwide, the regional settings are only software based, then it's a simple case of searching online for the code to enable access to the "engineer" menu, so you can change the regional settings, or by searching this nifty site: http://www.dvdhacks.co.uk/

However sometimes on the more expensive dvd players and all Sony players, the regional settings is set on the hardware/advanced advanced menu settings, which can't be changed without needing a jolly big hammer.

Thanks for all your help David. Now you mention it, I think there's some way of enabling multi-region DVD playback on the DVD player we have, I'll have to check that... If not then that £20 player would be a good option - it's cheap and it does the job!

Well, I remembered that we bought a DVD player from Richer Sounds a year or so ago and for some reason we unplugged it and put it away (very odd...). So I dug it out and it enables you to change the settings so you can play DVDs from any country in the world, there's a list of codes for different regions which you enter with the remote control. So now I'm good to go :D Thanks for the advice!

Best way, the prices of dvds in this country are expensive
