TraceOddity
You guys know I'm not a fan of negative, critical threads, but it's a forum where we can tallk about ALL aspects of Coldplay, so I'm going to put this out there...Not wanting to cause an argument, just a discussion. Like everyone else, I'm REALLY looking forward to the new stage/light show, so don't get me wrong here. But this HUGE AMBITIOUS tour is NOT even remotely 'carbon-neutral', when you take into account all the vehicles needed to haul it around the globe, and all the OHMS it takes to power it at each venue. (And the fact that tix are going to more expensive than ever, though the band want to keep the price low) Not finding fault, just starting a discussion. Would you trade the big show for a 'greener' show, or would you rather have the hugeness? (I'm not going to critisize you answers, and I hope no-one else does either, so be honest!!:D)
mc_squared
Much as I would much prefer smaller shows in more intimate surroundings, I can also appreciate this is nigh on impossible for a band of Coldplay's stature. I think the only possibility would be for them to do the occasional "unofficial" surprise show as other bands sometimes do. It's sad, but that's the way it is unfortunately.;)
TraceOddity
I remember seeing Tracy CHapman years ago when the ACC first opened, and although it was a 'big ticket' show, it came down to hert and her band with a single soptlight each...and the music spoke for itself...had to be one of the cheapest arena shows I've ever seen in terms of lighting and tech...but still VERY powerful.:)

I'm not really interested in lighting and tech myself. I would enjoy watching Coldplay just as much if they had a very basic set-up. Some of the best concerts I've been to were like this. It's the music that counts, after all.....................................

I think it CAN be done in large venues, but it has to be subtle. But if you haven't noticed, I haven't even voted in my own poll yet...I'm really torn on the issue...AND I want to know what Magic Balls are, lol!! Amazing atmosphere, and basic stage set-up!;)
Jenjie
I wouldn't log it as a negative thought. You've not gone into a rant or moan, just asked a question. One which wouldn't really have crossed my mind, but now you've put it out there is quite thought-provoking. i've not voted coz I'm still thinking. Do the two have to be exclusive? Can you have the huge show and yet still have a small carbon impact?

As for Becks's Magic Balls, I'm not going there...er...except to say that I hope Sticktoria doesn't have a hand in (or on) Coldplay's,lol!!

The best discussions for me are the ones where I don't think I have an answer. And yeah, I don't think it's really 'negative'. I should probably change the thread name. I don't think green/huge have to be mutually exclusive either, but it takes some real planning. (again, when you think about the money/fuel/vehicles/manpower it takes to put a tour like this on the planet, it ain't cheap, baby!)

TraceOddity
They would probably need to also discourage people from driving to the shows, which would be pretty much impossible to do. When I first saw them, it was an older, slightly less affluent crowd that went to the shows, so, imagine my surprise to see the ACC parking lot full of SUVs in 'o2,lol. You can't expect miracles, I guess (although, even though Chris owns an SUV, he still does the public transit thing when he can...credit for that where it's due!:))
StarsKay
Hmm, interesting question Tracie. Haven't actually thought about that side of things. I guess I'm just wrapped up in the whole new album and tour that, yes, it actually is something worth thinking about. I voted for a more greener approach but at the same time I feel it would be difficult to achieve. Smaller venues to Coldplay, just seems a contradiction in terms. They would also have to hold many shows to accomodate for the larger number of people wanting to see their shows, and that could put a strain on the guys as well as extend the period away from their families etc. I'm sure if they wanted to take a greener apporach (which we can't really cancel out at the moment because they probably are doing something to minimise their impact during all this), they could. They just need to consider a lot of other things that would add to the time and cost of setting up these shows, that those less concerned with the environment would otherwise ignore. Still though, an interesting question to think about  lol

Just to make people think and talk...and if the guys or 'team Coldplay' happen to read it, maybe it'll make them think too. Never a critisism, just a dialogue...great post!:D
