ATHENS 1896

The 1896 Summer Olympics were celebrated in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Officially known as the Games of the I Olympiad, they were the first modern international Olympic Games. Athens was chosen during an 1894 congress organized by Pierre de Coubertin in Paris, which also established the International Olympic Committee. The Games were held between Monday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 15, 1896.

 

Against all odds and despite bad weather, the Olympics were a great success. In spite of the absence of many of the time's top athletes, the Games had the largest international participation for any sports event to that date. Panathinaiko Stadium, the first big stadium in the modern world, overflowed with the largest crowd ever to watch a sporting event.The athletic highlight for the Greeks was the marathon victory by their compatriot Spiridon Louis. The most successful competitor in terms of victories was German wrestler and gymnast Carl Schuhmann.

 

After the Games, Coubertin and the IOC were petitioned by, among others, Greece's King George and some of the American competitors in Athens to hold all following Games in Athens. However, the 1900 Summer Olympics were already planned for Paris and, barring the Intercalated Games of 1906, the Olympics did not return to Greece until the 2004 Summer Olympics. ;)

The Games of 1900 were held in Paris as part of the Paris World’s Fair. The exposition organizers spread the events over five months, but they failed to emphasize their Olympic status. As a result, many athletes died without ever knowing that they had participated in the Olympics.

 

Women made their first appearance in Paris. The first to compete were Brohy and Ohnier of France in croquet1. The first female champion was in tennis: Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain. We are not talking of gold medals, as they were not yet awarded at the Games. Alvin Kraenzlein won four athletics events (the 60m, the 110m hurdles2 and 200m hurdles and the long jump) in three days. His record of four individual victories at one Games still stands for a track and field athlete.

 

Many countries won the first medal in their history, including Spain, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands and even Cuba and Mexico at the Games. In sports such as polo3, sailing and tennis, medals were won by teams comprising athletes of different nationalities. French athletes won many medals in the Games. Not only because there were many more of them than athletes from the foreign delegations, but also because certain events were entered by only French players.

 

Several posters were created for the second modern Olympic Games —athletics, rowing, cycling, fencing4 and gymnastics5. On one of the posters, a female fencer is holding in her right hand the three traditional weapons —foil6, sword and sabre7. However, it should be noted that women did not compete in the fencing competitions until 1924.

 

As for the medal, a winged goddess holding laurel branches in both hands can be seen on the obverse. In the background, underneath, there is a view of the city of Paris and the monuments of the Universal Exhibition.

 

On the reverse side, a victorious athlete is standing on a podium8, holding a laurel branch in his right hand, arm raised. A stadium and the Acropolis of Athens in the background complete the scene.

If you let political issues interfere with all international sporting events, they would no longer exist.

I'm sure that if you dug deep enough, you'd be able to find a reason for any country not to stage the Olympics or World Cup.

It should be up to the individual to decide whether their conscience allows them to participate or not.
