Why did Guy do the London Marathon?

Respect to Guy for doing this and the money he raised for charity.

I am interested as to what motivates people to put themselves through so much suffering (there are other ways to raise money for charity :))

Isn't Guy on record as saying he hated sports at school? Given this, I would have thought it was the last thing he wanted to do..

I have run the London Marathon four times to date (next April's will be my fifth) and it's a truly amazing experience - one of the best things I've ever done.

With all those tens of thousands of people taking part, the hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the route, and all the famous London sights you see along the route, the atmosphere is superb.

In terms of atmosphere and colour (owing to all the costumes), London is undoubtedly the best marathon in the world, and it's a target for anyone who takes up running seriously.

Running past Buckingham Palace and along The Mall and then crossing the finish line is a phenomenal and euphoric experience, as is crossing Tower Bridge at the half-way point.:D

It's great you get a buzz from the event and people who do this clearly love it.

I guess I'm more of a sprinter than a marathon runner, I *hated* endurance sports at school (like Cross Country) and still do.

Short, sharp bursts of exercise are my limit! I'm baffled by self-imposed abuse and suffering! :)

:stunned: are you saying you ran the marathon while Guy ran the same one?

LOL, no the city is well over 200k in population these days! :)

Still it's not as daft as it sounds, I once met a colleague who had spent the Millenium Evening in Sydney who happened to stay with a mutal friend (I didn't know at the time when I asked him where he stayed in Sydney, it was like "do you know X in Sydney?" and he did! :))

Where in Italy are you? Beautiful country been there twice now!
