Love is the End – Keane

Song Analysis

Now is the time of our comfort and plenty

These are the days we've been working for

Nothing can touch us and nothing can harm us

No, nothing goes wrong anymore

Singing a song with your feet on the dashboard

A cigarette streaming into the night

These are the things that I want to remember

I want to remember you by

They won't come again, because love is the end

Oh no my friend, love is the end

I took off my clothes and I ran to the ocean

Looking for somewhere to start anew

And when I was drowning in that holy water

All I could think of was you

Oh my friend love is the end

So best not pretend, because love is the end

Take it back, don't let it die

Oh rage against the fall of night

Because I still do depend on you

Don't say those words that wrung me through

Oh love is the end

So let’s not pretend, because love is the end

And so I tread the only road

The only road I know

Nowhere to go but home

Nowhere to go

Maybe our time is up

But still you can’t abandon

All the principles of love

Don’t say those words

Oh, don’t say those words

Don’t say those words

Don’t say those words

“Love is the End” is the eleventh and final track on Keane’s third album, Spiralling, at a length of 5:38 minutes. The name is taken from the chorus where Tom Chaplin shouts out expressively, “Oh my friend, Love is the end”. The song is told like a story, progressing through similar stages to a narrative, telling of a man who is experiencing a fleeting relationship with a girl before she severs ties with him causing him to go into denial about love and life.

The song follows the structure of opening with two four-line verses, each with an ABCB rhyming pattern. It then enters into a couplet for the chorus and is continued with another verse-chorus. This formation changes when the song flows forward into a bridge where the rhyming pattern changes to AABB. It finished with a 13 line outro bringing the song to a climatic ending.

“Love is the end” begins at an andante pace with a piano melody softly playing to the beat of hushed cymbals, introducing the song steadily to the listener. Two stanzas subsequently ‘orientate’ the listener lyrically to the current chapter in the singer’s story. It tells of a flourishing relationship he is experiencing with his girlfriend and all joyful memories being made in the time he shares with her. A positive tone is conveyed through words that are prominently used to describe happiness like, “comfort and plenty” and “nothing goes wrong anymore”, illustrating that they have reached the bliss stage they had been building up towards, “These are the days we’ve been working for” and together with her he feels invincible, “Nothing can touch us and nothing can harm us”. The repetition of the phrase also shows confidence in the singer and where he is heading. Throughout the verse the music is used as a quiet background ambience to allow the listener to focus solely on the words that entice them into the song.

Visual imagery is used at the beginning of the second stanza to paint a picture of being carefree and light-hearted, causing us to reminisce on our own past memories, “Singing a song with your feet on the dashboard / cigarette streaming into the night”. Alliteration of the ‘s’ sound is present to enhance the aural qualities of the verse. The word choice of cigarette also could pertain that this scene of ecstasy is fuelled by the adrenaline rush of nicotine and as a metaphoric symbol that ill side-effects could follow for the relationship. The stanza is summarised with more closing repetition; the singer expressing that he wants the memory to live forever, with the person beside him, “These are the things that I want to remember / I want to remember you by.” This is also demonstrated with the singer holding onto the last note, symbolising the adherence to the person and the memory.

The chorus creates a strong turnaround because he will never be able to relive those memories, producing a ripple of emotion for the listener as the violins sound saliently and the powerful piano melody resumes. Careful word choice is used referring to the person the chorus is projected at as “friend”. The line, “Love is the end,” outlines his feelings that there is nothing left in his life.

The third verse shows how much pain and sorrow the singer is experiencing from the breakup. “I took off my clothes and I ran to the ocean / Looking for somewhere to start anew”, shows that after losing his ‘love’, he is stripped of everything he has, leaving nothing left. He wants to go someplace where he can leave his past life behind and forget all that has happened. Alliteration applied to the words “somewhere” and “start” demonstrates an underlying relationship between them and highlights the statement that contrasts to the chorus. The route the narrator took is clear in the next line as well as his despair, “When I was drowning in that holy water”, as he intended to commit suicide. Through using “holy water” as a metaphor for the ocean, he believes that he will be cleansed of the torture of heartbreak by taking his life. However he aborts his attempt, not being able to let go of the thoughts of his love, “All I could think of was you”. After each line a strident succession of piano chords is applied, with increased volume, creating a build up of tension and emotion supported by a deeper and sombre cello. A modified chorus gives the advice that pretending to deny that love is the end is pointless, “Best not pretend, because love is the end”.

A bridge then begins, signifying the struggle for turnaround of circumstances as he begs his former partner to reconsider and to keep the love alive, “Take it back, don’t let it die”. A new instrument is introduced, a musical saw, which creates a sonic sound similar to a vocal harmony, adding to the overall momentum of the verse. The next line possesses a deep metaphoric meaning as he tells her to “Rage against the fall of night”, insisting that she needs to fight against the feeling she has no control over, like the inevitable “fall of night”. He wishes her not to say the words that mean it’s over because it will be the end of him and he needs her more than ever, “I still do depend on you / Don’t say those words that wrung me through”. Another slightly modified chorus is presented before the outro, this time more definite, with no “friend” being address and changing the words from “best not pretend” to “let’s not pretend”, indicating that his pleas were ignored.

Spanning a total time of 2 minutes, the outro is presented with epic proportions to craft an ending that will dwell constantly the mind of the listener. It is also the most moving part of the song as the musical and lyrically vectors combine for a dramatic climax. The backing vocals harmonise with the leader singer to a crescendo and the both the piano chords and melody are applied quite forcefully. The singer doesn’t know where to go anymore, “So I tread the only road / The only road I know”, and the only place he can go is home where he might be accepted. This could also be a subtle sub-theme related to the story of ‘The Prodigal Son’. On his philosophical journey he contemplates that maybe they weren’t meant to go on forever, though they shouldn’t “abandon the principles of love”, meaning that he has hope that he will find someone else. The song ends with the repetition of the line “Don’t say those words” like it was a semiconscious muttering on his walk back home. The singer pleads for his love not to say it’s over, leaving him in trek despair.

The music that accompanies the song greatly helps to influence the feelings felt through the lyrics. The song follows the style of piano-driven soft rock and characteristically has a slow rhythm that complements the deep and sad effect produced. From the beginning, a simple yet delicate piano arrangement can be heard, along with a hi-hat drum beat and a soft cello in the background which together make a sound that evoke memories of a rainy day, supporting what eventuates for the singer. The chorus introduces the violin that creates a saddening and weepy tone. The bridge and outro are supported with a musical saw, an instrument that sounds like a cross between a synthesiser and a violin, and is used to highlight the change in atmosphere from desperation to pleading.

Overall, I gained a lot from listening to this sad tale about the power of love. It evokes many passionate emotions through the combined use of deep and meaningful lyrics and slow and momentous music. It admirably achieves the purpose of a touching closing track, leaving the listener tranquil and serene, though thoughtful and sympathetic with the character in the song. The song relates to the theme of “The End” lyrically with the heartfelt melody about how love really is the end of everything and that it can make or break someone’s life.

Sounds like you're really busy.
