To answer some of your question:

Viva La Vida: basically tells the story of a king who falls from grace and wonders where it all went wrong.

Lovers in Japan: I personally think it's just a beautiful love song

Violet Hill: Rebelling against authority.

The Scientist:....

My short opinions:

VLV: a song about a king who has fallen from grace and wondered where it all went wrong

LIJ: Chris was inspired by a visit to Japan. He said "the sunset was very sexy". I remember that from an interview before the album came out

VH: somewhat anti-Bush, a song about war, and the suffering of people while some do not suffer at all

Scientist: about a break-up "It's such a shame for us to part"

The Scientist is a love song.

Something like "Okay guys... We're in the world, there's all this stuff going on... But all that matters to me is someone I fancy."

Yeah I've always seen The Scientist as a regretful break-up song. Like when you know a relationship isn't going to work but you feel fucking horrible about that person not being in your life anymore.

If you watch the video for the scientist it's not describing a break up, but basically chris was driving in the car with whom one can assume was his loved one, and the car swerved to avoid a truck and crashed. he wants to go back to the start because his girl died.

Really? For me Lovers in Japan has always been a cryptic reference to makind's struggle for a purpose:

"Dreaming of when the morning comes." or "One day we're gonna get out..."

Maybe I'm looking too much into it.

One song I really don't get is Chinese Sleep Chant. Is it about an insomniac?

Really when you think about it, it's about a guy who crashes his car, goes for a little walk into town and has a nap.

Yea, but you have to remember that most bands don't make their music videos to match the actual meanings of the song. A lot of times Coldplay will make a strange video like that because they want the listener to interpret their own meaning.

:laugh3:

Like Chris says: it means whatever you want it to mean.

Still, most songs are written with a certain meaning in mind. We can only guess what a song is supposed to be about.

except Swallowed in the Sea, that one is too obvious. It's so obvious it's about an old sea captain who's ship sank;)

Yeah, some songs are rather obvious :P
