Wireless router networking connection problem!

Featured Replies

I just bought a D-Link DIR-600 Wireless Router and have already installed it to a normal modem. I'm using an XP Desktop (because my laptop is on service).

It stated there that the router has been configured successfully. However, when I try to connect it to the Internet, I received Error 678: The remote computer did not respond. :veryangry2:

But, it works fine if I plugged off the router and connected the Internet directly to the modem (that's why I can use the internet now :D).

Can anyone help me find out what is wrong with my router? :\

What type of internet connection do you have?

Connect your router to the modem again and establish a connection to the router (via ethernet cable or wLan, whatever you have). If you're successfully connected with the router, do the following:

- Go to the Start Menu and select Run

- Type in the command cmd and hit return

- In the new window type in ipconfig -all hit return and copy'n'paste the resulting text into some text file.

Then come back here and post the result in here, please.

he's in Malaysia, so i guess he's on Streamyx...which is an ADSL connection.

@rudy_o : did you just connect the router directly to the modem? as in you didn't do any tweaking to your modem's settings? cos you may need to set your modem's to "bridge" mode in order for the modem & router to work together to connect online.

the other thing would be to make sure your router's set up to connect with PPPoE, DHCP is enabled & "Obtain IP Address Automatically" or "Dynamic IP".

but i think it's your modem's current mode that's the problem...

Thanks for your attention, guys

Sorry for the late reply, by the way. I was scanning my whole computer because I couldn't access the command prompt just now.

@Winnie:

I'm using ADSL, like kimgan said. Here's the command prompt details. :nice:

@Kimmi:

Yeah, I'm using Streamyx. ADSL. I connected the router directly to the modem without any bridge connection. I'm a beginner in networking though :disappointed:

And yes, I was thinking the same, but I have no idea on how to work it out except for checking the "Obtain IP Address Automatically"

hmmm...i may be wrong on this...but i think your DHCP Server shouldn't be the same as your Default Gateway if everything was set up fine.

btw, it's just a hunce of mine that it might be the modem's just not set to the right mode cos i had a similar problem in Singapore when i connected a router to my existing ADSL modem.

anyway, in order to change the modem to bridge mode, you need to be connected directly to the modem 1st & access the modem setup page, which you can access by just typing "192.168.0.1" (or something similar...it should be mentioned with your modem documentations in any case) into your browser's address bar, if you've never done it before.

these settings pages tend to differ between modems/companies, so i can't really guide you. but if you can click around on it, you should find 1 particular section/link/page that will let you change the mode (i think the choice is between "modem" or "bridge" modes).

hope this works for you...or maybe winnie might have a better solution for you.

I've tried accessing the setting page, but nothing showed up.

Should I press the reset button on the modem first?

actually it's the best solution to have the gateway and the DHCP-Server on the same device (gotta be the router in this case)

Your network settings seem to be okay, rudy_o, so the problem hast to be with the modem settings like kimgan said before.

Care to tell me the manufacturer & type of your modem?

How's the WAN-LED (that one that looks like a globe) behaving when your router is connected to the Modem?

It could be, that your Modem is having an IP conflict with your router (like kimgan said). Can you connect your PC directly to the modem and run the IPCONFIG again? Maybe we can help you then...

Care to tell me the manufacturer & type of your modem?

The modem model is Billion BIPAC-5112S.

Just realized that it's written down there ADSL2+ Router below the modem. Shouldn't it be modem instead of router, I bet?

How's the WAN-LED (that one that looks like a globe) behaving when your router is connected to the Modem?

The LED lights up normally, green in color.

Can you connect your PC directly to the modem and run the IPCONFIG again?

Here it is:

ipconfig_all_direct.jpg

By the way, I have asked the same question in TechGuy.org and this is what a moderator there has replied: link.

Okay, thanks!

This might help:

connect your PC directly to the modem, open up a browser window and type in:

http://192.168.1.254

after entering the correct username and password you reach the setup-interface of your Modem. Choose Advanced Setup > LAN.

- In the dropdown-box "DHCP" choose none

- Change the IP-Adress to 192.168.0.254

>Apply<

Then go to Advanced Setup > WAN.

Click on Profile 1.

- Change the Mode from Routing to Bridge.

>Apply<

Now restart all devices (plug out and in the power cable of the router and modem), connect your router to the Modem and connect your PC to the router and see if it works.

Tell me the results, please!

I've changed the IP address and DHCP status, but once I click SAVE, the page disappears and I can't access the page anymore. :disappointed:

This is my latest command prompt IPCONFIG/ ALL screenshot when the modem is connected directly to the computer (without router):

This is my latest command prompt IPCONFIG/ ALL screenshot when the modem is connected to the router and then, to the computer:

:uhoh:

And I realized that my LAN connection shows no/limited connectivity after I applied the change.

I tried to connect the modem and router to the PC back, but now the LED shows orange color instead of green.

So you weren't able to change the modem mode to "Bridge" because the page dissappeared?

Okay, we have to set your IP manually to get you back to the configuration wizard...

Follow these instructions: http://www.home-network-help.com/set-ip.html

And set your PC's IP to: 192.168.0.222

And the default gateway to: 192.168.0.254

Connect your PC then directly to your modem and try to access the config-page once again by opening http://192.168.0.254 - then try to set the Bridge mode.

Hope this helps!

Ah, you're here! :awesome:

How about the subnet mask?

EDIT: Okay, it's automatically being filled in. :embarassed:

This comes out:

oh well then try 192.168.0.223 instead ;)

& i think DHCP should be enabled on the D-Link router only (i.e. disabled on the Billion modem).

the router should also be the one handling the PPPoE stuff for going online on Streamyx.

& i think DHCP should be enabled on the D-Link router only (i.e. disabled on the Billion modem).

yeah that's what I meant. Should be enabled on the Router by default, though.

Seems like it's already in bridge mode, I guess?

Okay... this is a bit... surprising, but nevermind.

Well, you said the WAN-LED's orange when connecting the router to the modem? Do it again and when you're connected to the Router, go to it's configuration page: http://192.168.0.1

Choose Setup > Internet Connection and have a look if your Internet Connection is set to Dynamic PPPoE and your Username and Password are set..

  • Author

It's originally set as Dynamic IP. But there's a PPPoE option.

dlinksetup.jpg

since it wasn't working when it was on the Dynamic IP (DHCP) option, i'd suggest to give it a try on PPPoE this time.

  • Author

Still doesn't work. :bigcry:

So far this is what I've done:

1. Changing the modem to the bridge mode.

2. Changing the Dynamic IP to the Dynamic PPPoE for the router.

The globe LED is no longer orange in color, it's now in green.

What if I try to change the Bridge Mode option from 1483 Bridge IP LLC to 1483 Bridge IP VC-Mux? :P

And I've googled for solutions, and some said it's related to VCI and VPI? :wtf:

You can try and look if it works...

Can you also go to the Device Info > Status-Page inside your router's control panel and take a screenshot of it? Maybe this helps us a bit...

also a copy of the device's log would be great! (just below the "Status" entry in the Device Info menu)

Thanks! :nice:

Okay your router is now connected to the Internet... that's good so far... now I need another IPCONFIG log from you when connected to the router, if you don't mind ;)
