NORTHERN France is seeking to cash in on the 2012 London Olympics by pretending to be English.

 

Politicians in the coastal region of Pas-de-Calais are ignoring hundreds of years of not-so-neighbourly relations to rebrand their territory “part of Britain”.

 

Dominique Dupilet, head of the Pas-de-Calais County Council, said: “We are the south of England, and because we are the south of England it’s normal that we would associate ourselves with this extraordinary event.”

 

Almost £90million is being spent upgrading hotels and sporting facilities in the region, with the aim of hosting foreign teams who will train there before the showpiece.

 

Officials say a trip through the Channel Tunnel to central London takes just over two hours.
