The Pope has previously denounced rock music as the Devil's work but in a surprising change of tune, the Vatican has published a list of top 10 albums.

 

 

The article in the Vatican's official newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, recommends Oasis, the Beatles and U2 as bands the public should tune into.

 

The authors of the piece describe Oasis as the "enfants terribles of the working class" but say they were chosen because the Gallaghers gave the world a "jewel produced by torment" in their 1995 album (What's the Story) Morning Glory.

 

The Beatles' album Revolver from 1966 was apparently chosen because it represents a "point of no return in contemporary pop music".

 

Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, Santana, David Crosby and Donald Fagen have all also been approved for the Catholic faithful's ears.

 

The list will come as a surprise to many because the Vatican has been quite outspoken in the past in its views of modern culture.

 

 

The Twilight book and film series was recently described as a "moral vacuum with a deviant message".

 

The hugely popular film Avatar was described last month as a "sentimental and facile, anti-imperialist and anti-militarist parable".

 

However, it is thought the editor of the L'Osservatore Romano has been making an effort to shrug off the Vatican newspaper's previously old-fashioned image.

 

Last year a similar list was published with recommendations of films to see, including Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings.
