Cheryl Cole has sent a text message to husband Ashley telling him their relationship is over.

The betrayed singer sent the message after reading of her footballer husband's five mistresses, according to reports.

Cheryl intends to return to the UK this week to announce the split, with a draft statement regarding the divorce already drawn up.

It's over: Cheryl Cole, arriving at a recording studio in Hollywood yesterday, has sent a text message to husband Ashley telling him their marriage is over

A close friend of the star told the Sun that when she headed to Los Angeles following her performance at the Brits she was still deciding her future.

But she is now clear that the marriage is over and is said to have consulted divorce lawyers.

'The time for any more excuses or promises is over. She wants to have put a statement out by the end of the week so she can start moving on,' the friend said.

'She has no desire to humiliate Ashley further and wishes to proceed in a dignified manner.'

Even bookmakers were last night declaring it was 'inevitable' Mrs Cole would soon be filing for divorce.

A spokesman for William Hill said: 'In our opinion, it is a done deal and we are happy to hand over winnings now.'

Close: Cheryl's friend Derek Hough, who has been comforting her in LA

Yesterday one of Cole's alleged one-night stands - the fourth to come forward - claimed he had sobbed down the phone to her that he would die if he lost his wife over their fling.

He is said to have pleaded with U.S. political aide Ann Corbitt to keep quiet about twice having unprotected sex with her in a Seattle hotel last July when Chelsea was on a pre-season tour.

A fifth alleged flame, Alexandra Taylor, also came forward to say she had sex with Cole on the night he 'went public' with Cheryl in 2004.

Yesterday, Miss Corbitt told the News of the World she had no idea Cole was married until she looked him up on the internet.

Meanwhile, Miss Taylor, a 27-year-old glamour model, claimed in the Sunday Mirror that she bedded the player just hours after he and Mrs Cole danced at the National Television Awards in 2004.

Cole was exposed as a love rat in 2008 for sleeping with hairdresser Aimee Walton.

Last week, it was revealed X-rated pictures of him were sent from his phone to Page Three girl Sonia Wild.

Just days later, Mrs Cole was again devastated by claims he had slept with Vicki Gough, a 30-year-old secretary.

The news comes as Cole faces a fight for his future at Chelsea Football Club in the light of the scandal.

He faces a suspension or 'meaningful' fine from Chelsea after claims he hoodwinked the club into covering up his philandering.

Yesterday, it was revealed that Steve Atkins, Chelsea's head of media, told Cole and his lover Ann Corbitt how to silence allegations of a tryst.

However, he insists the pair misled him, saying claims of an affair were 'false'.

Sportsmail has learned Cole is to be hauled before Chelsea's board as early as Friday to explain himself.

The club decided to act because the defender's alleged affair occurred while he was 'on duty' during a tour.

Billionaire Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has already threatened players with disciplinary action, telling them to stop dragging the club's reputation through the mud.

One insider said: 'Ashley might be the best left back in the world but the players were told on Wednesday that nobody is above the law. A line has been drawn in the sand and the owner has had enough.'

Last night a club spokesman said: 'This is a private matter for Ashley Cole.

'Where anything is alleged to have happened on Chelsea FC time is an internal club matter and will be dealt with internally.'

In trouble: Ashley Cole's future at Chelsea football club is in doubt

But Chelsea are taking a very dim view of Cole's actions, not least because of the embarrassment caused to their highly regarded head of communications Steve Atkins.

Atkins was embroiled in the saga when Cole asked him to give advice to Ann Corbitt.

Cole is said to have claimed that he had not had an affair with the girl, but she now alleges that a liason took place.

While in LA, Mrs Cole has spent time with Derek Hough, a 24-year-old U.S. dancer. The pair have watched a romantic film together and dined at upmarket restaurant Katsuya.

However, Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli - who introduced the pair last October - said: 'Cheryl is going through hell. Derek is a gentleman and he's being a good friend to her. She is not the type who would do tit-for-tat.'

Cole's solicitor said the player had no comment to make. A spokesman for Mrs Cole also declined to comment.

My depraved son deserves to be dumped

ASHAMED: Ashley Cole's father Ron Callender

By Frank Thorne & Tom Latchem, 21/02/2010

CHEATING Cole deserves to be dumped by his wife, according to his DAD.

Ron Callender said: "This is as though Ashley is asking for Cheryl to divorce him.

"I can't say I'd blame her if she did. Cheryl has been shamed by what Ashley has done.

READ: Heartbroken Cheryl Cole 'dead behind eyes'

"People may be nice to her face because she's a famous singer, but they will be looking at her and thinking she's a mug for sticking by him after all he's done."

Factory worker Ron, 52, split with Ashley's mum Susan Cole when his son was three but has always kept in touch.

Speaking from Melbourne, Australia, where he moved seven years ago with wife Karen, Ron added: "Even though he's my son, I can't condone what he's done. His excuse to Cheryl last time when he had a one-night stand with another woman was that he was so drunk he didn't know what he was doing. Well he can't have been drunk again. That's a pathetic excuse.

"I hope they stay together. But Ashley has to realise he's not a silly teenager any more.

"He's a man of 29, married to the most beautiful girl, who he says he loves, and his wife is talking about quitting work to have a baby.

Depraved

"I would say to Ashley if you want to behave like a depraved womaniser, then DON'T get married or have kids. But it seems nobody can tell him what to do. Maybe someone should. I'd like that someone to be me."

Ron told how Cole's mother would be embarrassed by his antics.

He said: "Ashley was brought up by his mum, my ex-partner Susan, to respect women, not send naked pictures of himself in a state of arousal to girls he doesn't even know. His mother will be mortified by his behaviour.

"Susan was the driving force behind his soccer career. He's owes her everything.

"Ashley loves his mum. He's a real mummy's boy, so I'm baffled by his behaviour. I don't understand how he can treat women this way.

"I don't want to be down on my boy, but sadly, to me, Ashley's now in the same league as Shane Warne or Tiger Woods."

Since moving to Australia Ron has followed Ashley and Cheryl's life together closely and he still speaks to his son on the phone.

He said: "I have been proud to watch Ashley rise through the football ranks with Arsenal, Chelsea and England. My proudest moment was being in the crowd to see him play for England against Brazil in the World Cup in 2002."

He told how his son had not always been a womaniser. Ron added: "Ashley used to be a bit shy. For years when he was a teenager, Ashley had the same girlfriend. She was a lovely girl.

"He was a one-girl boy up until he started at Arsenal. The relationship ended soon after."

So now we know what Cheryl's "three words" were: You are dumped.:P

Of course he does! You think he has some sort of life to occupy his thoughts?

You spelt it 'Charyl' to pretend you're too cool to know how to spell it :nice:

Personally I couldn't give a fuck about Ashleigh Cole or whatever the fuck.

It's like he tricks himself into thinking that by copying and pasting articles from the Daily Fail (see what I did there Mark?) onto a Coldplay forum and coming up with 'smart' puns for the titles, he qualifies as some sort of freelance journalist, here to spread the fear and ignorance that has made him the 'man' he is today.

Cheryl Cole has announced that she is to separate from her cheating husband Ashley Cole.

The X Factor star, who has been left devastated by the Chelsea football star’s string of betrayals, has called time on her three-and-a-half-year marriage.

The 26-year-old this afternoon released a statement which read: ‘Cheryl Cole is separating from her husband Ashley Cole. Cheryl asks the media to respect her privacy during this difficult time.

‘We have no further comment to make.’

She's back: The star left LA in grey denim, but arrived in London all in black

The Daily Mail first broke the news of their impending split last week.

Mrs Cole had spent the past week in Los Angeles and flew into Heathrow Airport this morning.

The star wore large black sunglasses and a trilby hat as she was ushered through the airport by two police officers. Tellingly, she was not wearing her wedding ring.

Official statement posted by Cheryl's people, Supersonic PR, on Twitter:

The singer’s silver Mercedes arrived home at 12.18pm, while just hours before, crocked Chelsea and England player Ashley left the mansion in a black Mercedes, with his crutches clearly on display – while he was believed to be hiding in the back seat.

Another source revealed: ‘Cheryl now just wants to move on. She’s had enough.’

Before returning to the UK, Mrs Cole viewed a number of properties in Los Angeles.

These included a stunning Spanish-style five-bedroomed, six-bathroomed villa in the Hollywood Hills, which is on the market at £2.1 million.

It has its own 800-bottle temperature-controlled wine cellar, outdoor barbecue and kitchen plus a stunning swimming pool and lies above the legendary Hollywood Bowl concert venue.

The star also visited a house in Beverly Hills but rejected that because she, ironically, believed it was too much like a ‘footballer’s wives’ home.’

Meanwhile, her close friend and confidante Derek Hough has told a friend he is eager for Mrs Cole to move to the US as he revealed she is ‘wonderful.’

Mr Hough, 24, was first introduced to Mrs Cole last October.

He then appeared on her one-off TV special at Christmas and also appears in the video for her forthcoming single Parachute, which is released next month.

He told the friend: ‘Cheryl is wonderful, simply wonderful. It’s terrible what she’s been going through.’

‘I hope she moves out here. That would be great.’

He also revealed that Mrs Cole would be coming back to support him during the new series of Dancing With The Stars, in which he is one of the main dancers.

He continued to the friend: ‘She’s certainly making time to come back and support me in the series.’

Thumbs up: Derek looked rather pleased with himself as he stepped out in Los Angeles following his hotel visit

PR guru Max Clifford tonight told Skyy News that Cheryl's decision to split with Cole would have been a 'career and business decision' as well as a personal one.

Clifford, who is representing two of the women alleged to have had an affair with the footballer, told Sky News: 'When you are a star everything you do, private and public, has an affect on your career.

'Cheryl is only doing this for one reason, because of what's gone on.

'But when you've got two big stars then everything is played out in the public and obviously the public will have their very strong feelings and I'm sure that would have also played a part in her decision.'

He added, career wise, Chelsea and England fans will still 'love Ashley Cole' so long as he manages to perform well on the pitch once he recovers from his ankle injury and gets back on the pitch.

Clifford also said he has heard other rumours in recent weeks about other Premiership footballers having affairs, with the John Terry scandal promoting more and more women to come out of the woodwork. He predicted more revelations in the weeks to come.

Ashley was first exposed for cheating on his wife in 2008 with hairdresser Aimee Walton.

Earlier this month, it was revealed explicit pictures of him were sent from his phone to Page Three girl Sonia Wild.

And last week, Mrs Cole was left devastated when allegations emerged claiming he had slept with Vicki Gough, a 30-year-old secretary at Liverpool FC.

Why Ashley Cole's lucky it's only his assets Cheryl will chop in half

Home fixture: Cheryl and Ashley Cole appeared happy before it all went wrong

And then there were five. At the last oiled body count, that was the number of young women claiming to have had sex with serial cheater Ashley Cole.

No wonder his poor wife Cheryl has finally dumped him - by long-distance text, a nicely brutal touch.

Particularly considering that was the medium he used (complete with naked pix) to 'romance' his conquests. After Cheryl generously forgave him for his first sexual indiscretion - or at least, the first one made public - the little wretch deserves nothing more.

For those who haven't been following the twists and turns of this tawdry saga or celebrity soap opera (depending on your point of view), claims of Ashley Cole's first alleged affair surfaced in 2008, when a hairdresser called Aimee Walton said she had slept with him after they met in a nightclub.

Cheryl stood by her man, telling Vogue magazine later that year: 'It was horrendous. But look, Ashley's young and he's got a young mentality - for his age anyway.'

What did she mean? I think we all know now. Following the latest revelations, it is clear that Ashley is barely past the Andy Pandy stage of emotional intelligence.

First, we heard that Cole had sent photographs of himself 'in all his glory' to Page Three model Sonia Wild.

He came up with an excuse about giving the phone to a friend with the photos still on it, but that began to look threadbare when secretary Vicki Gough piped up to say she'd also been treated to lurid sex pix of Cole.

Then this weekend, U.S. political aide Ann Corbitt chimed in to say that she'd slept with the footballer at a Seattle hotel last July, swiftly followed by a glamour model called Alexandra Taylor.

Perhaps most hurtfully of all, she claimed to have slept with Cole on the very night he 'went public' about his relationship with Cheryl in 2004.

Racy: Sonia Wild (left) had text sex with Ashley while Aimee Walton described him as 'wild'

No wonder that Cole, the Chelsea and England footballer seen by many as the best left-back in the world, has now been left back at home, probably for good.

He has been ditched like an incontinent puppy on heat; a soggy creature who, in the end, couldn't be trusted and refused to be house-trained. Ashley has been kicked into touch by a size-three Louboutin, to the surprise of no one except himself.

'I can't lose my wife over this. If I lose my wife, I don't want to live,' he panicked last week, when news of his latest romp threatened to become public. It was too little, too late.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles this week, a heartbroken Cheryl went about her business exuding the kind of brave determination a romcom scriptwriter might describe as hurt but feisty.

Marching around with her tiny feet in their tiny sandals, wearing an Alexander McQueen dress and big, hide-the-pain sunglasses, she looked like Minnie Mouse in mourning. Completely irresistible.

Waiting in the wings: Vicki Gough (left) said of Ashley Cole that he was 'not raunchy' while Alexandra Taylor described him as 'lousy'

Just look at Cheryl go. Already she has made a record, worn a slogan T-shirt to semaphore her emotional status to the world (it read: 'I left my heart in Beverly Hills') and even been on a date. With a dancer. Called Derek Hough. He was spotted emerging from her Beverly Hills hotel at 4.15am yesterday, having been cloistered with her for eight hours.

Cheryl, I hate to sound a shrill note of caution so early in the proceedings, but you have to know that a diva dating a back-up dancer almost never works. Madonna, Scary Spice, Britney and J-Lo have all been there, done that and lived to regret it. Although they probably all enjoyed the two-step rumba at the time.

Back in London, Ashley Cole is coming to terms with his sleazy new reputation as the low life, big bad wolf who humiliated the nation's favourite Snow White. Five women?

Why, it was only five minutes ago that the clod was - after being caught and forgiven for being unfaithful the first time - expressing a wish to renew his wedding vows with Cheryl.

At that marital flashpoint, we should have known that the relationship was doomed. The fact that Cole felt the need to renew his vows after only four years of marriage said it all, really.

The thing is, the question that most people are asking is, why would he even want to stray with a wife like Cheryl at home? Is she fantastically boring?

article-0-0860FEB0000005DC-98_233x423.jpg

Ann Corbitt: Called Ashley 'creative' and said she was unaware he was married

Perhaps she doesn't make his scrambled eggs and soldiers just the way he likes them. Recently, the couple have not looked particularly happy together in public, while he seemed increasingly jealous of her fame, her focus and her application for hard work.

Also, Cole's casual wantonness appeared to thrive and flourish in the macho, licentious, sex-obsessed world of Premiership football.

In that sweaty culture, packs of young men regularly travel away from home together and are - we now discover - encouraged and enabled to do their worst. More than one of the girls Cole is reported to have slept with claimed that their trysts were facilitated by Chelsea FC officials escorting them to and from Cole's hotel bedroom.

Questions need to be asked about this seedy, shadowy world where wives are treated with little respect and grown men are exhorted to take advantage of the willing, starstruck girls who throw themselves at their feet of clay. Again and again, in Ashley Cole's case.

And what are they like, this quintet of sex texters, trampy nightclub opportunists and wannabe WAGs?

Most of them knew that Cole was married when they met him, but so what? In fact, he slapped one so hard on the bottom that, she reported, his wedding ring left a mark on her buttock.

You know, he could have plunged a red hot branding iron on to any of these random, fake tanned cowhides and it still would not have made any difference. The girls would still be tripping over their Miss Sixty boots for the opportunity to sleep with him - and tell the world about it later.

More from Jan Moir...

Today, Aimee, Sonia, Vicki, Ann and Alex are all singing like lipsticked canaries about their nights of empty lust with the Chelsea player. Now there seems to be nothing we don't know about sex with Ashley, his white mini-pants, his needs, his arrogance, his idiocy. It is not just Cheryl who is cringing. We all are.

It is hard to know what is the most dispiriting; his serial infidelity, or the girls who were prepared to be used like slippers by him, even though they knew there would be no Cinderella ending.

They were slipped on, tried for size and comfort and then discarded. Oddly enough, the match reports still varied, proving that sex is always a game of two halves.

'I was very taken aback by how intimate he was and how needy he was. He was a creative and adventurous lover,' said Ann Corbitt.

'It was lousy,' said Alexandra Taylor. Miss Gough said: 'It wasn't raunchy stuff, more like relationship sex. I thought he would be throwing me all over the bed.'

Meanwhile, Aimee Walton's verdict was the opposite: 'He's wild, really rude in bed.'

In looks and temperament, these girls appear to have nothing in common, except that they were earthgirls and they were easy. Most of them would do and say anything for the opportunity to sleep with a footballing star. And they would put up with anything too.

Aimee the hairdresser had a particularly grisly experience. Cole threw up before and during their coupling, but told the 22-year-old she should be honoured by his celebrity effluvation.

Sonia Wild said they had text sex during which he sent her explicit photographs of his naked body.

Few of the girls baulked at having unprotected sex with him. They said he was persuasive and made intimate comments about his body. And they say romance is dead.

The thing is, it all started out so well! Cheryl and Ashley, two young people as cute as buttons, married in the summer of 2006. It was a deeply personal and private event, which they sold to OK magazine for a sum not unadjacent to £1.5million.

Remember the pictures? They looked like two beautiful Oompa Loompas marrying in an all-white heavenscape designed by Barbara Cartland.

There was one spectacular outfit; a rich roll of silver silk, pinned with a dashing white rose and accessorised with diamond earrings the size of peanuts. That was Ashley.

There were seven bridesmaids in peach satin and white net petticoats - including all of Cheryl's Girls Aloud bandmates. And there were tears and emotion, too. Also from Ashley.

'My eyes welled up when I saw my bride-to-be coming down the aisle. I was so touched. She was a princess marrying me. I can admit I cried,' said Ashley after the ceremony. Well, now we all know why Mr Pantsley was crying so hard.

Despite Cheryl's neck tattoo - a large 'Mrs Cole' in pretty, cursive script - her assertion that 'this is the man I am going to have my babies with' and her promise that 'he's learning, he has a beautiful soul, he's a really nice guy', the curtain has come down on their goldfish bowl marriage.

Apparently, Cheryl is returning home shortly to consult lawyers and chop their assets in half. If that is the only thing chopped in half, then Ashley Cole remains a lucky man. For the time being. This soap opera isn't over until the small lady sings.

Ashley Cole is blaming the breakdown of his three-and-a-half year marriage to Cheryl on his mother-in-law.

The 29-year-old England defender says their problems began when Cheryl's mother Joan Callaghan, 49, moved into their nine-bedroom £6million Surrey mansion two years ago.

As the couple line up for a divorce battle over their £22million fortune, the Daily Mail reveals his anger as he tells friends: 'How could our marriage stand a chance?'

It's over: Cheryl Cole, pictured here arriving at London's Heathrow airport yesterday, has announced she is separating from her husband Ashley

After enduring more than a week of humiliating revelations about her husband's serial betrayals, the X Factor judge finally declared their union was over yesterday afternoon.

His bitterness over Cheryl's 'interfering' mother emerged as it was revealed today:

  • The couple are squaring up for a £22million divorce battle
  • Ashley offered to go into sex rehab like Tiger Woods
  • He was calling Cheryl every ten minutes begging for a reconciliation
  • Cheryl's parting words were: 'You have lied and lied and lied. I'll see you around.'
  • She is already looking to buy a £2.1m villa in Hollywood

Cheryl, 26, confirmed the split hours after arriving home from a week in Los Angeles, where she had been counselled by close friends including Simon Cowell and dancer Derek Hough.

The singer - who has 'Mrs Cole' tattooed on the back of her neck - and the 29-year-old England defender now face an acrimonious struggle as they divide up their estimated £22million fortune.

The Daily Mail has learned that Cole has already told his glamorous wife she will have to battle to get any of his money.

A brief statement issued by the singer yesterday said: 'Cheryl Cole is separating from her husband Ashley Cole.

'Cheryl asks the media to respect her privacy during this difficult time. We have no further comment to make.'

Last night it was reported that Ashley bombarded his wife with desperate phone calls begging her to save their marriage and even offered to go to rehab to tackle his sex problems.

He was said to have left a string of emotional voicemails begging the X Factor star to reconsider their separation, but she refused to answer the calls, according to the Sun.

Cole's last ditch attempt to save his marriage mirrors that of Tiger Woods, another sports hero who has fallen from grace, who went to rehab.

A close friend told the paper: 'Ashley was calling every ten minutes or so and leaving messages. He was still very emotional and in distress.

'He suggested they could go for counselling and that he could try therapy. He admitted for the first time that he has problem.

The official statement posted by Cheryl's people, Supersonic PR, on Twitter

'Cheryl refused to answer any of the calls and they went straight to voicemail. She was with Derek at the time talking about her future.

'Cheryl was talking constantly and talking everything through. One minute, she was really upbeat, feeling strong and positive about a new life on her own,' the friend said.

'Then she would come crashing down and feel sorry for Ashley and think how much she loves him. But in the end she decided that she has to stay strong and stick to her plan.'

Cheryl is now expected to take up Simon Cowell's offer for her to appear on the new U.S. version of The X Factor - a far cry from her plans to try for a baby next year - and has already looked at a £2.1million Spanish-style villa in the Hollywood Hills.

Mrs Cole had told her husband she wanted a divorce before flying to Los Angeles for work and wanted him out of the house by the time she got home.

A source claimed in the Daily Mirror that her parting words to him were: You have lied and lied and lied. I'll see you around.'

The couple did not sign a pre-nuptial agreement before their wedding in 2006, with Mrs Cole famously saying: 'I think that's defeating the point.

'We're getting married because we're committing ourselves to each other to spend the rest of our lives together. No ifs and buts.

'We're a work in progress, we're going to build our married life together not thinking about if it ever ends.'

A source close to Mrs Cole said last night: 'This was a terrible decision for Cheryl to make, it's the worst thing she's ever had to do, but enough was enough.

'She is resting at home with her mum Joan and all her friends around her. Her Girls Aloud bandmates are supporting her.

'Yesterday was just exhausting and she just spent the evening relaxing with a plate of beans on toast.'

But a source close to Cole, who is paid £82,000 a week by Chelsea, said he blames their marriage woes on the fact that her mother Joan lives with them.

The friend said: 'Cheryl told Ashley she wanted out of the marriage last week, he's in a terrible state.

'He loves Cheryl with all his heart and never wanted it to come to this. But now that Cheryl has pulled the plug, his love has turned to anger and he told her, "You'll have to fight for any of my money".

'He blames everything on Joan living with them, but Cheryl insisted on it after he cheated on her. But he keeps saying, "How could our marriage stand a chance?"'

Daily Mail online revealed in April 2007 that Cheryl's mother was moving down from Newcastle as a lodger 'to take care of Ashley and their two dogs'.

At the time, he was reported to be 'delighted' with the arrangement.

In an interview last October, Mrs Cole said she had been left heartbroken by Cole's infidelity with hairdresser Aimee Walton in 2007, which was made public in 2008, saying: 'I've come to the conclusion that I don't trust anybody in life except my mother and my dogs.'

But she went on to insist she had a 'happy' marriage, describing Cole as 'a genuine nice person'.

Cole's cheating was exposed this month after it was revealed that explicit pictures of him were sent from his phone to Page Three girl Sonia Wild.

Last week Mrs Cole was devastated when allegations emerged claiming that he had slept with Vicki Gough, a 30-year-old secretary at Liverpool FC.

One of Cole's alleged one night stands - the fourth to come forward - then claimed he had sobbed down the phone to her that he would die if he lost his wife over their fling.

He is said to have pleaded with U.S. political aide Ann Corbitt to keep quiet about twice having sex with her in a Seattle hotel last July when Chelsea was on a pre-season tour.

A fifth alleged flame, Alexandra Taylor, also came forward to say she had sex with Cole on the night he 'went public' with Cheryl in late 2004.

The mother of cheating Ashley Cole has stepped in to try and act as peacemaker in a desperate bid to try and save her son’s marriage to Cheryl Cole.

As the crocked Chelsea player undergoes intensive therapy for a broken ankle at a sports clinic in France, his mother Sue Cole is acting as a ‘go-between’ between the couple.

But it seems that Mrs Cole’s valiant efforts may be in vain as friends of the X Factor star told how she had been left furious after Cole blamed his marriage woes on his mother-in-law, Joan Callaghan.

Worried mum: Sue Cole has been acting as a 'go-between' between Cheryl and Ashley in an attempt to save their marriage

Mrs Callaghan, 50, has been an almost permanent presence at the Coles’ £6 million mansion in Hurtmore, Surrey, and friends of Cole told how their sex life ‘dwindled to virtually nothing’ with her in the house.

However, last night, sources close to the Girls Aloud beauty insisted that Mrs Callaghan was not to blame, despite the fact the singer admitted their sex life was almost non-existent.

They insisted that the petite brunette, nicknamed a ‘pocket rocket’ always stayed in a separate annexe away from the nine bedroom home and insisted she did not live with them full time but would just come down for occasional extended stays.

A friend said: ‘It’s rich that Ashley’s trying to blame Joan. For starters, Joan always stays in an annex when she comes down – and she’s not there all the time.

'Cheryl is the only member of Joan’s family who lives down South. Everyone else is in Newcastle. So when she comes down, she may stay for four days at a time but then she heads back North.’

Now Cheryl's weight has plummeted again after barely eating for the past three weeks and surviving on peppermint tea.

Too heartbroken to eat and with no interest in food, she is thought to have lost 5lbs from her already slender frame.

A friend told The Sun: 'Since the latest storm broke, she has lost her appetite completely.

'All she will touch is peppermint tea. Her mum has been cooking up lovely homemade soup but she is not interested.'

They said her energetic routine and the rehearsals for her Brits performance last week also burned off the calories and contributed to her weight loss.

She dropped to 6st in three weeks after learning of Cole's affair with hairdresser Aimee Walton in 2008 and left friends deeply concerned for her health.

But, despite relations between the two sides worsening, divorce proceedings have not yet started.

The friend added: 'At the moment, it is probable the separation will eventually lead to divorce but not definite.’

Cole, who yesterday was seen at a clinic with teammate Michael Essien wearing a brace over his injured leg and sporting an unshaven face, is facing two and a half months recovery with gruelling rehab every day in a bid to get fit for the World Cup this summer in South Africa.

And his mother Sue, who brought up her sons single-handedly when their father Ron Callender walked out on her, is now desperately trying to mend the broken relationship.

Both Mrs Cole and her son Matthew have been in touch with Cheryl, with a source saying: ‘Sue is acting as a go-between and trying to calm the waters.

Plummeting weight: Cheryl Cole (L) dropped to 6st in 2008 when allegations of Ashley cheating first surfaced and she holidayed with her Girls Aloud pals

‘She has been speaking to Cheryl about trying to see both sides of the situation, but Cheryl is furious that Ashley is totally unrepentant and has refused to apologise or see it as his fault and take the blame.

‘Ashley never sees things as his fault and he feels Cheryl has neglected him. Sue Cole is desperately worried about Ashley’s state of mind and feels he is struggling to stay calm.

‘Sue has asked Cheryl to calm down and talk to Ashley and be there for him while he struggles to get well again in time for the World Cup. Cheryl is feeling calmer. She’s at least listening to Sue and Matthew.’

Meanwhile, Mrs Cole admitted her sex life with estranged husband Ashley was virtually non-existent months before they split.

The ‘Fight for This Love’ singer – who announced her three-and-a-half year marriage to the soccer player was over earlier this week following allegations he had cheated on her with five women – said she was so busy with her career the pair barely had time to see each let alone get intimate.

When asked if she was pregnant, Cheryl replied: ‘No, chance would be a fine thing. I haven’t been home. It would never be perfect timing, so I am not trying, I am preventing.’

Mrs Cole is continuing to be comforted by some of her band-mates.

Nicola Roberts was at the family home until the early hours of yesterday morning (25) – only leaving in a limousine at 1am.

Last updated at 11:22 AM on 01st March 2010

No longer wearing his wedding ring, Ashley Cole now appears resigned to the fact that his three-and-a-half year marriage to estranged wife Cheryl is over for good.

The 29-year-old Chelsea player was spotted without his diamond-encrusted band for the first time since Girls Aloud star Cheryl walked out on him last week following a string of alleged affairs.

Cole has been desperately battling to save his marriage from a rehabilitation clinic in the south of France where he is receiving treatment on his broken ankle.

Inevitable: Ashley Cole, pictured at a rehabilitation clinic in the south of France without his wedding ring

According to sources at the Centre Europeen de Reeducaion du Sportive, near Biarritz, Ashley has been bombarding the singer with calls and text messages in between physiotherapy sessions.

He had kept his ring on since arriving on Tuesday and had remained hopeful that he would be able to salvage their marriage.

article-1254506-0880F716000005DC-343_233x423.jpg

Nothing to do: The footballer has had plenty of time to reflect on his marriage while holed up getting treatment on his broken ankle

But he gave the strongest hint yet that a divorce is now almost certain after he removed the ring on Saturday.

Still hobbling around on crutches, he ventured out onto the balcony of the third-storey room - only the second time in six days that he has been outside. He only briefly stepped out into the private grounds for some fresh air earlier this week.

The rest of the time he has spent holed up in the complex alongside team-mate Michael Essien, with sources reporting Cole looks ‘miserable’.

Things got worse for the star over the weekend as he watched his Chelsea team-mates crash to an embarrassing defeat to Manchester City.

And if that wasn’t enough, the multi-millionaire defender had to make do watching Saturday’s match on a communal television screen in the canteen along with a number of other patients.

News that he has ditched his wedding ring comes 13 days after Cheryl fled to the US after four women came forward claiming to have slept with the footballer. A fifth woman says Cole had sent her lewd pictures of himself to her mobile phone.

On that occasion, she was wearing neither the £150,000 ring she received from her husband on their wedding day in July 2006 or the £160,000 square-cut diamond he famously presented her with in the wake of his affair with blonde hairdresser Aimee Walton in December 2007.

She announced she was separating from Cole less than a week later. She has prepared herself for a divorce by telling friends that she has no plans to demand any money from her husband and does not want to follow in the footsteps of Heather Mills who battled for a share of Paul McCartney’s fortune when they split.

article-1254506-088475FD000005DC-845_468x576.jpg Showing the strain: Cheryl Cole looked drained as she left her Surrey home today

A source at the clinic has told the Daily Mail that the footballer has been bombarding Cheryl with text messages and has been ‘glued to his mobile phone’ in between physiotherapy sessions.

‘He spends most of his time texting on his mobile phone and calling his family.

‘He looks miserable. But he has had an awful lot of time on his hands to contemplate what has happened as apart from exercising, eating and sleeping there is nothing to do here.

‘He is basically holed up here. None of his family or friends have come to visit. They even put a curfew on patients here and he is pretty much cut off from the outside world.

‘It can get extremely lonely. It sounds like he is doing everything he can to try and turn things around at home and is barely talking to anyone else in here. He seems like a little boy lost.’

It is understood that Cole will be staying at the clinic near Biarritz for at least another week.

Meanwhile, Cheryl, 26, was spotted leaving her Surrey mansion in the back of a Mercedes this morning looking tired and drained.

She spent both Satudary and Sunday holed up in the property being comformed by her mother Joan Callaghan, 49.

On Saturday night, when approached by a reporter, Mrs Callaghan refused to comment on reports that she had a role to play in her daughter's marriage problems.

When the allegations were put to her over the house's intercom system, she hung up straight away.

The police presence which had previously been in place outside the property ended as torrential rain battered the south east of England.

Cheryl briefly left her home on Friday night to watch Lady Gaga perform at London's O2 Arena.

Devastated: Cheryl, pictured here on her way to a Lady Gaga concert last week, has cancelled interviews and public appearances since allegations surfaced of husband Ashley's alleged affairs

Cheryl has cancelled virtually all of her TV and radio appearances she was due to give to promote her new single, Parachute, which is released on March 15. She was scheduled to be interviewed on Jonathan Ross’ BBC chatshow the Thursday before, but has now pulled out.

Over the weekend, Cheryl's home was besieged by fans hoping to lift the heartbroken star's spirits.

Three Girls Aloud fans turned up outside the star's £6million mansion in Surrey, hoping to offer the love-split singer their support.

Bournemouth University students Juliet Crouch, Verity Coles, both 21, and Charlie Jessey, 22, drew hearts around their lips with black felt-tip pens and stood outside shouting: 'We love you Cheryl.'

They also pulled their down their tops and scrawled 'Cheryl' across their chests. Verity said: 'We all love Cheryl. There's no doubt she should kick Ashley out for good. We all feel very sorry for her and just wanted to let her know she has a lot of support. Everyone is on her side.'

If a dog is a man’s best friend, then it comes as no surprise that Ashley Cole refuses to relent over custody of the two he shares with Cheryl Cole. Men may be happy to leave their children in the custody of their mother, but when it comes to their pooches, it’s a different matter entirely. The philandering footballer is so intent on seeing his pets that, according to rumours, they have their own driver for the days he is allowed to spend with them.

Did I mention the dogs are chihuahuas called Buster and Coco? A bit unmanly, no? Well, according to the latest twist in the canine world, Cole’s bang on trend.

It started on the fashionable streets of Shoreditch, where men were spotted proudly leaving warehouse conversions accompanied by – no, not a Geldof sister – lap dogs. Tiny, ratty, yappy dogs. The kind that you might step on accidentally. The breeds adored by Paris Hilton. Pugs. Handbag mutts. The dogs that, let’s be honest, are a little bit girly.

At first glance, the trend is discordant. Society expects men to be hurtling down streets with slavering rottweilers or walking on the Downs with burly labradors. One thinks of Bill Sikes and Bullseye. Of hunt masters huddled around hounds on a frosty meet. Or men goading their staffies in concrete pockets of inner cities. The Pomeranians are zipped up far away in Hermès handbags in Los Angeles, or Cheshire. Until now.

The number of men unashamed to show off their little dogs is multiplying. Indeed, the other day, I saw three men with lap dogs sitting separately in the same bar. And it’s not just the trendy streets of E1. A friend’s mother tells me that she was taken aback to see a beefy man strolling around Windsor Great Park with a chihuahua. The phenomenon has been witnessed in Bath, Manchester and Scotland – and you can’t move in Milan airport for men with their bichons in tow.

Dianne Lunney, a breeder of chihuahuas for 40 years, says that male attitude towards small dogs often changes. “They start by saying 'I don’t want those little rats for dogs’ but when they get the dogs home, the wives call me up and say that their husbands have taken them over.”

Graham Foot, chairman of the British Chihuahua Club and a breeder for 50 years, is not remotely embarrassed to walk his Chihuahuas in public and says that they’re more of a challenge than his German shepherds. “Small dogs can be very aggressive and lash out just as much as more stereotypically dangerous canines.”

But it’s unlikely that men are coming round to the idea of “rat dogs” because their aggression would give them street cred. Despite its unlikely appeal, it chimes with the zeitgeist.

As men sneak fingerfuls of their girlfriend’s moisturiser, wax, and wear sarongs on the beach, why shouldn’t their canine tastes encompass the feminine as well as the masculine? Man-bags remain in vogue so the question of transport is already, erm, in the bag. And for the urbane bachelor, the smaller the dog, the easier to look after.

But is machismo really so passé? Do we feel comfortable about men sauntering around town with a pair of jewelled Chihuahuas? Is metrosexuality really attractive?

Judging by the scene I witnessed the other day, the answer is “yes”. One such chap strolled into a video shop with a miniature dachshund. Like iron filings to a magnet, the women raced to get as close as possible to the dog – and by extension, his owner. He could have left the shop with a full dance card.

Perhaps Barack Obama’s choice of a foolish-looking Portuguese water-dog called Bo has made it easier for men to shun what convention dictates.

You may be surprised to hear that the first dog to have dined in the House of Commons is believed to have been a chihuahua. It was the annual dinner of the British Mexican Society in 1954 and, apparently, the dog wore a green jersey and a diamond collar.

It remains to be seen whether this trend will stick with the urban Dandies or change the way we feel about man’s best (smaller) friend. Toy dogs may escape the associations of WAGs, Taco Bell and Madonna. But will men ever really be able to stomach walking what is, basically, an over-grown hamster on a lead?

If Ashley Cole is still unsure about the state of his marriage then this photo should make things crystal clear for him.

His estranged wife Cheryl sent a blatant message to her cheating husband today as she proudly waggled her bare wedding ring finger to the cameras along with a beaming smile.

The singer was - ironically - in Paris, the city of love, but her delight at facing the single life couldn't have been more apparent.

Cheryl, 26, is in the French capital promoting her new single, and looked absolutely stunning as she left her hotel to do an interview with TV channel Canal+.

In a fitted black, white and lace dress which clung to her curves, her happy face was certainly a far cry from the sombre and woeful look she displayed yesterday.

Gone was the pale face and brave smile and in their place was a glowing and healthy looking girl who looked ready to take on the world.

Healthy and happy: Cheryl shows off her glowing skin and toned legs in a short black and white dress as she left her hotel in the French capital

Only 24 hours ago, observers couldn't help but notice a pale and thin looking Cheryl as she made one of her first public appearances since her split from Ashley.

They remarked on her worryingly thin frame as she arrived for an interview on BBC Radio 1 in London to promote her new single, Parachute, the third track off her number one album, 3 Words.

The singer's face looked sunken after she spent the past week at home in bed with bronchitis but she blamed it on a hangover after a night out with her girlfriends.

She also said she was flattered by a recent poll which placed her as the most inspirational woman in the world.

Loud and clear: A grumpy Ashley, pictured here watching his team Chelsea in the Champions League last week, is facing a divorce after wife Cheryl's blatant signal to him today

But perhaps in a veiled jibe about her marriage to Chelsea footballer Ashley, she said: 'I love inspiring other women.

'But I'm still a human being, so obviously there are going to be times I still make mistakes - a bad choice or a bad outfit or whatever, but I'm hoping that still is an inspiration to women.'

Raised the alarm: X Factor host Dermot O'Leary discovered a threatening message against Cheryl on his voicemail

Meanwhile it was revealed yesterday that detectives are investigating a threat against Mrs Cole in an answer-phone message left on X Factor host Dermot O'Leary's mobile phone.

The presenter was believed to have raised the alarm after picking up the threat on his voicemail left by an unknown caller.

A City of London Police spokesman confirmed an investigation had been launched into an 'offensive message'.

He said: 'We are investigating claims of an offensive message being left on a mobile telephone. It follows a complaint from a member of the public.'

O'Leary, 36, joined the ITV show in 2007 - a year before the Girls Aloud star's arrival as judge.

The singer announced last month that she and her footballer husband Ashley Cole were splitting following reports that the England and Chelsea star had been repeatedly unfaithful.

Earlier this month, Cole, 26, was forced to pull out of a string of singing appearances after being struck down with a bout of bronchitis.

Security for The X Factor judges was apparently increased in 2008 after a tracking device was put into Simon Cowell's car.

Cowell was left shaken when he found the device in his £140,000 Bentley after seeing a man lurking nearby.

Cole is said to have been made aware of the threat but has not listened to the phone message.

A source said that O'Leary was 'horrified' when he heard the threat.

'He thought at first it was a sick wind-up, but soon realised there was something more sinister going on,' the source told The Sun.
