Singing Tips?

Featured Replies

So I'm interested in starting singing. For a number of reasons (money, time, ect.) I will not be able to take voice lessons. I have almost no experience in this field. Where do I start? I know some warmups (lip rolling scales). I am not sure if I have a naturally good voice (I doubt it). I've never heard a serious recording of me singing. I'm not sure what my octave range is, I think it's that of a typical adult male. I'm 15 years old, so is it too late to start?

It's never too late to start! I was 15 when my first band started and 16 when I got a vocal coach!

I'll come by and give you specific tips later...I g2g right now.

Well, I just made a random recording of me singing Yesterday by The Beatles. I used that cheap software, and I hadn't done any warmups, and put almost no effort or emotion into the song, and it sounded half decent. I think that's a good sign.

Yeah, but you'd be surprised how if you listen to that a year from now you'll probably think it's utter shit. Happens all the time. :laugh3:

My first big tip for you: ALWAYS WARM UP. Think of your vocal chords like a balloon. You want to stretch a balloon out before you expand it so it expands easier and lasts longer. Your vocal chords are very much the same, the more you warm them up, the better and farther they will go. Plus if you warm up just past your comfort range every single day, that comfort range will grow vastly and you will be able to hit high and low notes you never could before.

Does it work in a way that if I sing properly with warmups and that stuff on a regular basis, my voice will improve?

Depends what you mean. Will your voice magically change and you will sound like Josh Groban? No. Will your range increase and will you learn better breathing technique and will your confidence and overall sound improve? Yes, if you work at it and know what you're doing.
