Has Hollywood run out of ideas?

Featured Replies

Yes, Hollywood is indeed in a deep lack of ideas. I mean, have you guys seen the movies they've been taking out these last years?

In my own opinion, cinema was much better a decade ago, when the special effects weren't as good as today, which lead people to think hard enough for a good movie idea.

Today all the movies we see have perfect special effects, and that's where the ideas get lost. Everything is about destruction, explosions, scenes of violence and good-looking people. And making movies out of books is quite popular too, even if it rarely works out...

I blame Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Both boring as hell film adaptations that were box office successes. YAWN.

You sir, are an idiot.

One of my favorite "chick lit' books is being turned into a movie right now, and they have sold out and cast people who do not fit the characters just to make a lot of money at the box office. It makes me not even want to see it.

which one?

I agree for the most part about adaptations ruining the book, but not always. I could never get into the LOTR books, but loved the films. Loved The Beach both as a book & a film. shopaholic was destroyed when it was made into a film.

I haven't been to the cinema in ages, mainly through lack of interest. The only cinema I can go to in my neck of the woods tends to only show the big-budget blockbusters, most of which are a waste of money, time and effort.

However, it now looks like I'll be going next week.;)

its good to get out of the house sometimes and away from the computer! Fresh is a beautiful thing! :p

i think the studios are playing it safe also given the bad global economy...they want movies that are guaranteed successes to make sure they have the money to make more movies at the end of the day. so that means less risks as far as movie genres/stories go.

hmmm interesting point... it very well may be the case. And in most of these instances, its been proven right.

they are also doing a lot of remakes. :\

ugh! I know! I find this annoying... leave the originals alone! Take Nightmare On Elm Street for instance... why oh why are they ruining this? Its a cult classic! Its like remaking The Rocky Horror Picture Show!!!!!! Sacriligious!

my downtown Indie theater here is the only place I've been able to find anything somewhat unique or intriguing, and even then it's fifty-fifty.

this is what I LOVE about NYC... we've got a few indie theatres to choose from all around the city (mainly downtown as well)-but I completely agree!

Same. I never read the books, saw the movies and was intrigued to read the book but I couldn't get into it. I think some of the adaptations do 'enhance' the book/reader experience like The Lovely Bones. I enjoyed the movied because it added to my book experience, but take Twilight for instance. What a disgrace! AND I wasn't even into the series as much as I was HP!!!

will these Hollywood producers ever get it right?? :\

Well they want to change a bit , give it a tweak from the book. Not base it entirely well it sucks for the avid readers of the book that was converted to movie but for plain viewers its more understandable for them
