The 5-ton male named Sabu evaded his handlers at a circus as he was being loaded on to a lorry. He walked into the city where he bathed in a lake before heading up the main Bahnhofstrasse towards the railway station. He was finally lured into the back of a lorry and returned to his owners at the travelling Circus Knie. A Zurich police spokesman said afterwards: 'The elephant was walking slowly and calmly through the city. 'He didn't run, didn't chase anyone, he caused very little damage and no one was hurt. 'But it was still a frightening sight for many people, who are clearly unused to seeing such a large animal on the loose.'
