My Life Without Me

Featured Replies

OMG! This movie had so many moments where I wanted to just break down and cry!

If you haven't heard of this movie, My Life Without Me (MLWM, currently at your local art house, probably) stars Sarah Polley as a young mother of two (about 23 years old) and wife who is diagnosed with an aggressive form of ovarian cancer. The illness is not treatable and she is given two months to live. The movie is about what she does in he final days.

I goes without saying that there would be a lot of touching moments. I'm going to put those aside and just stay that they were pretty well done. There are two problems I had with the movie that, when I put the sentimental moments aside, lef tme with an overall negative impression of the film.

Spoilers from here down.

I found the whole affair with Lee unrealistic. You can say she wanted to experience another man. You can say that she was just acting out on an internal curiousity regardng her life. Fine, fine, fine. There is no way you can reconcile that with the love she's supposed to have for her husband. When she make sher list of things to do she has two items devoted to what at the time is a potential affair ("Make somebody fall in love with me," and something like "Sleep with another man") and only one item devoted to her husband ("Find Don another wife"). I just find it difficult to believe that a person with two months to live would think like that and the fact that the relationship between Lee and Anne was such a large part of the movie was disappointing.

Secondly, the movie really drew on. There was a part in the movie, where she goes to visit her father, when I said to myself "When is she going to die?" It's hard to carry a movie when people know the ending because they're always going to be looking for it, but the fact that I was looking or it so soon was not good. The story was just told really early on and I felt the last set of interactions she had with people was superfulous. I thought that her last exchange with Lee was exemplified this.

Overall, I thought this ended up being a movie that I was glad to see but still below average, if only slightly. I thought Sarah Polley and Scott Speedman were both good, though.

i saw a trailer for this, it looks quite good - i haven't seen alot of films like this.

the only thing that would put me off seeing it is the total depressment of the storyline - i would most likely pass out from saddess!!

thanks for the review though!

You don't know how happy I'm seeing this thread, Richard!! :D

I saw that film months ago and I love it!! I think you're right about the things you explain but, in a general view, I think it's a sweet film, very touching, and make you think about your life.

The film shooting was in Canada, but do you know that the director is a girl from Barcelona? :smug: Her name is Isabel Coixet.

And one of the actress (the new neighbour of Anne) is also spanish, Leonor Watling.

I saw the name of the director, didn't recognize it and didn't realize she was Spanish.

I thought the movie was below average, but at the same time I would strongly encourage others to see it. yes, it is sad, so make sure you're willing to put up with that befor eyou see it (for Hayley). But like Noni mentions, it really make syou think about your life.

For me, it was one of the best movies I've seen this year. Not because it will be a clasical, just for the feelings and the sensibility...

Who can help to cry when she's recording the tapes for their daughters? Awwww, pleeease... :(

That was the most heart-wrenching scene ... and the worst pat: The whole movie you know it's coming. You prepare yourself for it. But when it finally arives are you propared? Hell no.

Polley was really good.

Really!! She was fantastic!!

The most I like from this film is that it's deep touching but not because the director only use dramatical scenes. It's hard just for the situation and the feelings. I don't know if I can explain it well... :/

Yeah, it is an interesting film, Ren. I recommend you 'cause it makes you think about a lot of things.

When we went out of the cinema me and my friends were really touched.

I hope you like it, if you decide to go finally... :smug:
