Coldplay in Rock in Rio: some news

Featured Replies

Here are some brief articles the local news agencies wrote after press conferences with Coldplay in Rio:

Coldplay claim to be looking for a song to make a tribute to Rio

Used to accomodating quite unconventional songs in their set, Coldplay are looking for a song to make a tribute to the Rock in Rio crowd this Saturday. “We like to play covers to connect to the crowd. We’re going to pick one for Rio, any suggestions?”, asks drummer Will Champion during a press conference in a hotel in Rio this Friday (30).

He says Chris Martin may quote some lyrics from “I go to Rio”, by Peter Allen, sampled in “Every teardrop is a waterfall”, first single off their fifth album, which will be released in October 24th. However, one would rather not wait for “Garota de Ipanema”

“We played ‘Girl from Ipanema’ once. Stevie Wonder played it last night? No way, then...”, jokes the musician. “Another possibility would be that one from Duran Duran: ‘Rio, Rio...’ (sings some lyrics).

Besides hit singles such as “Fix you”, “Viva La Vida”, “Yellow” and “The Scientist”, the English band recently played “Rehab” (a tribute Amy Winehouse, who recently passed away) and “Everybody hurts” because of the end of the band REM, announced last week.

We’d like to do something with Shakira, says Coldplay frontman

Chris Martin wants the Colombian Singer on the stage, but he doesn’t intend to sing in Spanish

After recording with Rihanna for the yet unreleased album Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay now dream of sharing Rock in Rio stage with Colombian Singer Shakira. “We’d like to do something with her”, says Chris Martin this Friday, 30, in Rio de Janeiro, sitting in a conference room in a hotel in Ipanema that overlooks a beautiful beach. “But we don’t know whether she’ll be here. I think she will already have left. At least we can go watch her”. The British band take the stage on Saturday, October 1st, on the main stage (Palco Mundo).

If that unlikely partnership really comes to life, do not expect Martin to sing in Spanish or any other language. “I admire people like Shakira and Ricky Martin, who can sing in many languages”, he says. “It’s impressive. We can’t do that. Every time we tried to sing in any language other than English, we were laughed at. It’s terrible. I always think that we’re lucky to have been born in an English-speaking place and that there are people who sing in that language. Had we been born in Hungary or Sweden, the challenge would’ve been completely different. We would love to sing in Spanish, but that would be horrible”.

Coldplay first shared the stage with Jay-Z, with whom they recorded “Lost” in 2008. “I think that would be an obvious collaboration, wouldn’t it? But he had to call it off. I don’t know what happened”, says Chris. “Rihanna would’ve been cool too, but she left. How long would it take for her to come back? If you bring her back, we can do it!”, he jokes, hinting at the recenly recorded track “Princess of China”.

The singer explained that this kind of collaboration, on stages, usually comes up spontaneously. “We’re just there having dinner and we decide to do it. “Much for the misery of the other band members: “Then I have two hours to learn a song”, retorts guitarrist Jonny Buckland, who seem to be joking rather than complaining.

Mylo Xyloto tracklist will be well represented in the Saturday concert: there Will be six news songs in the setlist, among them “Every teardrop is a waterfall” and “Hurts like heaven”. “Every time we record a new album, we know that it can take some time before people understand where we [musically] are. It’s not always immediate, explains Martin on playing new songs before 100,000 people when the album hasn’t been released yet. “And we always play our hits, we never let them out”. The guitarrist adds: “We don’t want to rely on nostalgia. We want to give people what they want, but we would also like to deliver something new, fresh”.

I'll try to post some more afterwards.

“It’s impressive. We can’t do that. Every time we tried to sing in any language other than English, we were laughed at. It’s terrible.

:D :D :D

thanks!

We wanted to put some happiness in the album

Coldplay, tonight’s headliner in Rock in Rio, will play six tracks off their upcoming release, their 5th Studio album, Mylo Xyloto. It is Chris Martin who guarantees that during an interview at Hotel Fasano, Rio de Janeiro, where they are staying.

Coldplay has already made history in Rio. For the first time, fans camped in front of their hotel to wait for their idols, something that may cause some fuss. One of the biggest pop acts nowadays, the band say that the new album is a spinoff of the last one, Viva La Vida, 2008. “When we finished Viva La Vida, Brian Eno said that we hadn’t finished our job yet. So we carried on, experimenting with different sounds and styles", said Jonny Buckland, the band’s guitarrist. “We tried to put some happiness in the new album”, claims Martin. He says that one of these Dionysian ingredients is Rihanna’s collaboration. “It was a big step for us”. They met in Las Vegas. Martin was looking for something to counterbalance the band’s style. “It took us a lot of time to sum up the courage and invite her. We English people get very nervous when approaching someone we don’t know”.

[...] According to Chris Martin, the title of the new album doesn’t mean anything. “It sounds like Greek, but it’s just a word we made up. Our intention was to use something no musician has ever used”.

Martin and Buckland defined Coldplay as a family, a family with bad days and good days and laughed when journalists commented on the possibility of Mylo Xyloto being the last album theywould record together. “It’s like a marathon. When we reach the finish line, it’s always like this: uhf! [probably a relieved ‘uhf’]. As I got older, the good things in life got better and the bad things got even worse. Writing, for me, it’s a way of organising the chaos of life”. According to Martin, one of the new tracks, Us against the world, a slow folk, was inspired by Masters of War, a song from the album Frewheelin’ (1963), by Bob Dylan. “I like all these things: Billy Bragg. Woodie Guthrie. I like everything that is good”.

He talked about how he admires Leonard Cohen, some chords of whom he used in the new album. He also talked about the antiwar manifesto he wrote in Us against the world, a verse of which is: “Don’t wanna see another generation fall” [ETIAW lyrics, actually]. He explains: “I’m not talking about young people riots on the streets. I’m talking about war, of the possibility of losing your life all too young amidst this stupidity. My dad was a soldier, I know that it is”, he claimed. He said it was a timidly conceptual album, but “there are no dragons, no wizards” in their songs.

He said that, when they released the first album, they couldn’t even imagine headlining Rock in Rio and that they didn’t have too much ambition. “Today, more than ever, it’s not possible anymore to say what’s possible and what’s not possible to do”.

There are a couple more short interviews (with Will, Guy and Jonny :))

Lovely interview with Jonny (a few pictures in the end). It's great that he did the interview :) Jonny is always so gentle.

When did you arrive at Rio de Janeiro?

We arrived today (Friday, 30), from New York very early.

Are you enjoying your stay in Rio up to now?

We’re staying in a beautiful place. It’s right in front of the sea. It’s a long way from London to here, at least for us.

You’re back in Brazil, this time, to play to 100,000 people. How did you react to the news?

Well, ten years ago, when the last Rock in Rio took place here, playing here was a dream. When we found out that the festival would be here again, we got very excited.

Coldplay are famous for concert stravaganza. What did you prepare for this festival?

There’s a festival in England called Glastonbury. It’s the most important festival for us to play our music. It’s the festival we’re most connected to and we planned our performance there for a whole year. We’ll use it as model, but we’ll make some changes.

The new songs will already be in the setlist?

We’re playing five or six new songs, I guess. Some hits from the past as well.

Talk a little bit about the new album. What changed in the recording process and how did you feel during that period?

The process always start well. Since the last albums at least, it starts with the four of us playing in a room with Brian Eno playing music and experimenting. Playing, playing, playing, playing, playing for months. Playing together. It helped us to create this sense of unity, as musicians as well. We feed off each other [Nós nos alimentamos um dos outros]. One thing we learned with Brian is that that is the way: we should enjoy the process of making albuns and playing music together and should not be in separate rooms. It’s supposed to be all about creating something that goes beyond one individual.

Nowadays many bands record one or two albums and then go solo. How are Coldplay functioning in your 5th album?

We really like each other (laughs). Oyr favourite bands always sticked together. I think we realised very early that what we had was unique: the chemistry between us. No one else had it. We’re not the best musicians in the world, but together we’re something unique. We realised that before money was involved. One of us left the band for a short period. It was before we released any album, before any external pressure could tear us apart. Fame, money ou anything. We felt right in the beginning that what mattered was unity.

Talking about pressure, we can see from here that the British press can be quite invasive.

To be perfectly honest, we don’t feel famous when we’re at home. We go to the studio every day, we see our friends and don’t consider ourselves famous.

Isn’t it part of your routine?

No, not at all. When we go to do interviews, it’s always a surprise that people are willing to check what we’ve done.

Recently, it was published a Portishead member complained about your fireworks. How did you react to that?

I didn’t know about it. But you know... I love festivals where bands are not playing at the same time. We recently played in Scotland and Sweedish House Mafia were playing too. They did a remix of one of our songs, Every Teardrop is a Waterfall and we thought “What the hell is going on? Are we playing the wrong song?”.

But you will not give up on the fireworks?

No, not yet. We’re sorry for Portishead.

Have you watched Foo Fighters’ Walk video? There’s a scene where Dave Grohl is stuck in the traffic and he gets mad seeing Justin Bieber and Coldplay stickers on the cars.

We love Dave Grohl, so we’re perfectly fine with whatever he does.

What did Coldplay prepare for Rock in Rio?

We’re going to play new songs light a lot of fireworks. Sorry if Portishead play too [they are not anyway :P]. We’ll sweat a lot and face it as if it were our last concert. We’re very excited to be here and to play in Rock in Rio.

What are you expecting from the fans in the festival?

Whenever we’re in Brazil, the crowd response is always good. We love playing here. We hope it’s the same.

That sounds like Chris' words! :P
