Helicopter crashes on Auckland's Viaduct Harbour

Featured Replies

Why on earth was he flying that close to stuff? Looked like he wasn't even restrained in his seat.

The pilot sure had a very lucky escape.

I hate to think of what the outcome would have been if the helicopter had crashed nose first instead of tail first.

My computer won't quite play this video properly, but from the gist of it, maybe this was a bit too risky from the get-go? I wonder why they decided to try installing a tree with a helicopter and not a crane?

Apparently helping put up a Christmas tree was the bit I heard, but perhaps some tasks are best left to slower, less risky methods. I know cranes do break and crash as well, but that's infrequent and usually from extreme loads. The problem with any aircraft is it only takes one hard-to-see cable and whamo!

Yes it was helping with the Telecom Christmas tree.

There's been more footage shown on tonight's news and it showed a worker pulling on one of the cables only seconds before the helicopter crashed.

wasn't it the existing mast of a tower crane that the chopper collided with?

Well there is a structure nearby and the helicopter's tail was sliced off on impact. This may have contributed to the crash, but I also think the worker was partly responsible. When he pulled on the cable, it got caught round the rotor blades.

In December the investigations confirmed that the crash was caused by a worker pulling on the cable attached to the helicopter.

This was more of a freak accident than a disaster as there were no deaths.
