British Girl Named Diot Coke in 1379

Tue Mar 9, 2:15 PM ET

LONDON - Naming your child after a popular soft drink could be seen as a little bit faddish, but the parents of young Diot Coke might be forgiven — they gave their baby daughter the name way back in 1379.

Researchers at Britain's National Archives believe that the little girl, born in West Riding in Yorkshire, was the unfortunate victim of the corruption of the name Dionisia. One of the diminutives derived from that name on its path to the modern day Denise was Diot.

The girl's surname is believed to be a variation on the name Cook.

Archivist George Redmonds, writing in the organization's Ancestors magazine, discovered in his scrutiny of the birth archives that names now considered to be masculine, such as Philip and Thomas, were once used for girls in the 14th century.

Redmonds also found that names such as Godelena, Helwise, Idony, Avice and Dionisia were more popular than some of the names now considered traditional, such as Mary.

Wrong Number Leads to Woman's Arrest

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - An Oklahoma woman dialed a wrong number and ended up under arrest after she tried to set up a drug deal with her former parole officer, police said on Tuesday.

Patricia Michel was arrested last Thursday on suspicion of the unlawful distribution of a dangerous controlled substance at her home in Durant, Oklahoma, near the Texas border.

Michel called her former parole officer, Doug Canant, on his cell phone by mistake, thinking he could help set up a deal where she could acquire methamphetamines, police said.

"I am a bit of a joker, so I was playing along," Canant said in a telephone interview. "She thought she was talking to her local drug dealer."

She told the parole officer she did not have money to buy drugs because she was waiting for her U.S. tax refund and wanted to exchange one type of drug for another, Canant said.

Acting on Canant's tip, the local drug task force sent agents to Michel's house and set up a deal. She handed over two pills that were controlled substances and instead of getting drugs, she got arrested, police said.

Michel has been released on bond but faces between two years to life in prison if convicted. If she receives parole, she may have Canant as her parole officer again.

"It is a small town and there are only three of us (parole officers). It will be the luck of the draw," Canant said.

Desperate Afghan Makes an Ass Out of Himself

Tue Mar 16,10:18 AM ET

KABUL (Reuters) - A frustrated Afghan soldier who could not afford to get married has been released without charge after being caught having sex with a donkey, police said Tuesday.

The soldier, who was not identified, was detained for several days last week after a young boy spotted him with the animal in an abandoned house in the southeastern town of Gardez.

"The man insisted he had no other choice but the donkey because he could not afford to pay a dowry to get married," a local police officer told Reuters.

The man had since been released without charge, he said.

In many parts of Afghanistan (news - web sites) men must pay at least $3,000 to the parents of their prospective bride, making marriage difficult for many in a country where the average annual income is only a few hundred dollars.

Under the strict Islamic rule of the fundamentalist Taliban regime overthrown in 2001, sex outside of marriage or bestiality were punished by stoning to death or flogging.

The scam artist

Good-bye, Mother!

A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him.

"Pardon me," she said, "I'm sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look just like my son, who I haven't seen in a long time."

"That's a shame," replied the young man, "is there anything I can do for you?"

"Yes," she said, "as I'm leaving, can you say 'Good bye, Mother!' It would make me feel so much better."

"Sure," answered the young man. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, "Good bye, Mother!" As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50. "How can that be?" he asked, "I only purchased a few things!"

"Your mother said that you would pay for her," said the clerk.

Saudi man weds 13-year-old, plans 60 marriages

March 18, 2004 08:54 IST

A Saudi man aged 64 has wed a 13-year-old girl, celebrating his 58th marriage, and plans to take two more wives, according to a Saudi newspaper.

Saleh al-Saiari, a shepherd turned businessman, told the daily Asharq Al-Awsat that he would 'resort to the usual draw' to choose which of his current four wives he will drop before marrying again.

The young girl he married just a month ago is among the four, one of whom must go since Saiari can keep only four wives at a time under Islamic law.

"I plan to round off (my married life) with a 60th wedding," said Saiari, noting he got married for the first time at age 14.

Saiari said he was 'in very good health' after his 58 marriages, from which he has a total of 36 children.

He said his wives included both 'university graduates and illiterate women', adding that he preferred 'modern spouses because they are educated'.

Many men take more than one wife in the conservative Gulf Arab monarchies, ending up with large families.

A father of 63 in the United Arab Emirates married for the 12th time last year, choosing an 18-year-old as his bride in the hope of eventually fathering 100 and figuring in the Guinness book of records.
