Be polite, ask a shop owner if you can play in front, or maybe talk to a cop in the place where you want to play. And if someone asks you leave, leave. The trick is to look not like a beggar, but a musician who needs to make a few bucks to eat.

 

European countries are much more lenient to busking in the streets than in certain cities in the U.S. due to post 911 terror concerns believe it or not.

Futher research has revealed that in some areas you may actually apply for a permit. I've actually heard of this in Santa Monica, Calif.
