Johnny's guitar effects
I reckon there's a really gentle phaser on the lead guitar bit at 0:15 in Trouble. There's a tremolo on the guitar part that kicks in at 2:20 in How To Be Dead. There's also a tremolo on live versions of Trouble (it's very obvious the first time he plays that riff on the Norweigen Live EP at 0:18), but I'm not sure if that's on the studio version.

Jonny's Tele...
I already put my cable through my strap - it's not the jack socket itself that's the problem, it's the way it's attached. The little flat nut-type-thing unscrews itself from the jack very easily. With the Electrosocket, the jack is screwed into the jack cup itself instead of held in by a nut. I've already put one in another guitar and it works a treat.

Jonny's Tele...
I haven't had to do anything to it yet (had it about a year and used very frequently). The only thing that annoys me is the horrible jack cup - it's the same one as every other Tele and it comes unscrewed very easily. I'm going to replace it with an Electrosocket soon.

Jonny's Tele...
They might not any more, but Fender definitely made Thinlines in the US in the seventies - they've got an original at my local guitar shop (link). I guess the whole thing hinges on whether Jonny's Thinlines are originals or reissues. I reckon they're originals, but I could be wrong. He was playing a black one on Jools Holland last night, which I've never seen before. I play a Mexican Thinline and it's a stunning guitar so I've certainly got nothing against MIM guitars - just don't know if Jonny feels the same way :)

Jonny's Tele...
The gear list on the official site just lists the Thinlines as "Vintage Fender Thinline Telecasters (x2)". It lists the blue Tele as "Japanese Fender Telecaster" though, so you might be thinking of that.

Jonny's Tele...
Fender didn't open factories in Japan and Mexico until the 80s, and I don't think Jonny's Thinlines are reissues so it's more than likely that they're USA-made. edit - don't know when they stopped producing Thinlines originally though, so they could be Japanese I don't think he plays '69s either - I've only ever seen him with '72s (Sunburst, brown (I think) and his new natural one)

Jonny's Tele...
It's a Jerry Donahue Telecaster (Made in Japan). It used to be Will's, he gave it to Jonny.

pedal madness
I think the signal from the Rhodes piano is being sent to Ed's pedals and Thom's mic signal is being mucked around with by Jonny. The processor Jonny's using is a Korg Kaoss pad (that link is to the KP2 website, but Jonny uses the original). I think Ed just uses his guitar pedals (lots of delaying/looping going on)
-
Is it possible to connect a guitar directly to a PC?
I doubt you can go straight from guitar output to soundcard line input because the guitar signal won't be at line level - there's nothing to amplify it. Do you have an amp with a line out or headphone output?

johnny's metal thing
If you're in the US you can order one fromMusician's Friend. I don't think the magnets themselves actually physically reverberate; IIRC it's alternating electromagnets which make the string vibrate. As well as fading in/out, it causes the string to vibrate indefinitely, which means you can emulate other instruments (with a lot of practice). I got one for Christmas, it's fairly easy to learn the basics. I was playing Coldplay stuff and My Iron Lung within a couple of hours :P

Telecasters
Yup, he has used a Jazzmaster. From Total Guitar: "I had the Tele at that point, and I added a Jag. Chris also bought a really nice old Jazzmaster around that time and I started using it, although it's still the Tele you'll hear on most of the tracks on Parachutes: Don't Panic, Everything's Not Lost, Trouble and High Speed. I played the Jag on Yellow and Shiver and the Jazzmaster on Sparks and We Never Change" Teles are lovely, Jonny Greenwood uses a couple of Tele Plus' with humbuckers in the bridge. I'm pretty sure Ed uses a standard, Thom mainly uses a Tele Custom these days. I really like the DS-1. I used to have one, but somehow I managed to lose it

The "coldplay guitar tuning"

The "coldplay guitar tuning"
If you're going to do alternate tunings you're going to need a chromatic tuner. The Boss TU-2 is one of the most popular, but that's not cheap. To be honest they're all much of a muchness, but go for one with a jack input and a built-in mic if you're going to use it with acoustic.

jonnys rig
Of course, it's *cough* *coughcough* ;) Sorry, dunno, I'll have a look around though. Oh yeah, I did a GuitarGeek-style diagram of Jonny's rig. This was compiled from stuff I found on the internet (and from common sense), but it should be pretty accurate. I've missed out the rack effects/tuners, but I guess they come after the wah and before the amps.

I'm Buying a Guitar...
Yeah, I just realised that it's the same as the one that Chris uses for One I Love as well.

I'm Buying a Guitar...
Will do :) There are a couple of Stripes covers I did up at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/kit.eason and a Don't Panic cover at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/kit.eason/Don't%20Panic.mp3 which I didn't put a link to (probably cause it's crap)

I'm Buying a Guitar...
thanks :) the recording quality isn't great cause I kept re-recording different guitar and bass parts - when i started recording it I only had one guitar melody and no bass or rhythm guitar. So I wrote them on the spot and inevitably feckered them up, so I had to go back and record them. Over and over and over and over and over again.... Which doesn't do the tape much good.

I'm Buying a Guitar...
I've only ever written one decent song, and that doesn't even have any lyrics cause I'm crap at writing them and no too hot at singing (hence the lack of vocals on GPASUYF). I need to get a better voice.
