  2. COLDPLAY concert tonight!!! I had been planning on attending the Literacy Signing at the NJ RWA Conference this past Saturday since at least May or June, but instead had the really fantastic opportunity to take the girls to see the 2008 Tour of Gymnastics Superstars show at the IZOD Center. It was a really great afternoon, and the excitement and joy on both of my daughter's faces the whole day weekend was priceless. The show is a choreographed performance of freestyle-type gymnastics routines featuring members of the men's and women's olympic teams as well as about a dozen other very talented performers. My youngest has been a fan of Nastia Liukin since before the Olympics, so we were so thrilled to see her perform. So while we were at the IZOD Center, I had an impulsive moment of inspiration and decided to find out if there were any tickets available to see the alternative Rock band Coldplay in concert either Sunday or Monday night (tonight). It turns out Sunday's show was sold out but there were a handful of tickets available for Monday night's performance, so I bought two tickets for tonight's show! Since my husband isn't crazy about the band, I'm taking my thirteen year old daughter to her first ever rock concert (Sorry, I don't count the Jonas Brothers) and we're both super super excited. My husband was surprised that I was willing to take her to a concert on a school night, but she's a straight A student in honors classes and helps out with her sister and or my father-in-law without too much complaining, so I say 'why not?'--it's a great mom and daughter night out while she still doesn't mind being with me. Besides, I really want to go!!! I told her I'd try to act and long young so she didn't feel too awkward. I asked her what she thought I should wear to look younger and she said, "A push-up bra." Niiiiiice. She said she was kidding, but I don't know. I don't think something like that would fly so fast out of her mouth if there wasn't some grain of truth to that. I told her they're the way they are because they nourished her for all those months and months when I breastfed her. And months. Embarrassment and guilt are a few of the best weapons of revenge against a teenager. Heh. Last night my husband said he thinks I'm going to regret taking her to the Coldplay concert tonight--that she's too young and will be exposed to inappropriate behavior of audience members. Maybe I'm naive, but I'm thinking it won't be so bad. And maybe it's a good thing that I'm taking her to her first real concert, so we both find out what it's like these days before she starts wanting to go on her own with friends. I don't know, I haven't been to a grown up concert in ages. I think the last concert I went to was to see Sting on his Dream of the Blue Turtles tour in 1985. Could it be that long ago? Oh wait. I went to see jazz musician Pat Metheny in 1992 maybe. Oy! I've got to get out more. So what was the last concert you've been to? And who would you want to see in concert if you had the opportunity? We have floor seats FLOOR SEATS! at tonight's Coldplay concert. Nothing like diving right back into the concert scene full force, eh? Here's a video of Coldplay performing the single "Lost" from their current best selling ablum Viva La Vida. http://theromanticlife.blogspot.com/2008/10/coldplay-concert-tonight.html
  3. Newly with Jonny & Will. Since I was 9 or 10 with Morten.
  4. I'm not sure if there will ever be a Stuff Christians Like cologne. I mean you dream, you know? You watch people like Usher and Gwen Stefani develop their own signature scents and you think to yourself, "Why not me? Couldn't I have a cologne called SH (Side Hug) that smelled like a potpourri of old hymnals and goldfish crackers?" Unfortunately the toilet water industry is all about who you know, and I don't know anyone. Chances are, I won't be able to offer you SH anytime soon, even though the commercial would feature Carmen just looking soulfully at the camera with his finger to his mouth whispering, “SHHHHH.” But if I did have a cologne and did become a Christian thousandaire, one of the first things I would do after donating to charity is found the "Sounds almost like a Christian Band hall of fame.” (Which is “SALACBHOF,” something that sounds like a salad dressing made by David Hasselhoff.) It would probably be located in Nashville and would be an organization dedicated to celebrating bands that you swear are Christian but are not. Clearly U2 would be in there. In fact, they'd probably have their own wing. But today, I want to induct another band into the Sounds almost like a Christian Band Hall of Fame. Today, I want to induct Coldplay. I've been thinking about writing about them for a while and when my friend Blake told me his friends analyzed the lyrics of the latest album for Christian undertones, I knew it was time. But what makes them worthy of the "Sounds almost like a Christian band?" hall of fame? What would it take for any band to be inducted into this fictional organization which I hope will eventually have a t-shirt? I'm glad you asked: 1. At least one Christian conspiracy. A pastor called me recently and told me a member reported to him that every song on the latest Coldplay album, Viva la Vida, was recorded in a different church. That would be awesome, if it were true. Some it was recorded in a church and some of the album was recorded in their London studio, which is an old bakery. But you have to admit that the idea of Coldplay traveling the globe to record each song in a different church is the pinnacle of “please let this band be Christian” excitement. 2. One major magazine article that discusses faith. If you do an interview with the magazine Christianity Today, and talk about Christianity and faith, big deal. Christianity is 50% of that great magazine’s title. We expect that. But if you’re on the cover of the June 26th issue of Rolling Stone and are called an “Anxious Rock God” and inside are called “the Jesus of Uncool” and then have a pull quote that reads, “I grew up with the prospect of hell looming ever large…,” we at the induction committee take notice. Sure, you might take some shots at faith in the article, but you’re talking about it. You keep talking about it Chris Martin, and we’re giving you points for that. 3. You have at least one song that can be performed in church. A great way to get yourself into the SALACBHOF is to have at least one song that a hip worship leader can perform at church much to the confusion of some members and the wild delight of others. My cousin played the song Viva la Vida at his church months ago and he’s not alone. It’s currently tearing up the “secular songs worship leaders like to sneak into church” charts. Well done Coldplay. 4. Lyrics that sound Christian. Take your choice with Coldplay, their latest album is a smorgasbord of lyrical question marks that keep us Christians guessing. In Cemeteries of London, does “God is in the houses and God is in my head, and all the cemeteries in London, I see God come in my garden, but I don’t know what he said, for my heart, it wasn’t open” mean we all need to open up our hearts if we want to know what God says? Is the garden, the garden of Eden? In “42” does the lyric, “Time is so short and I’m sure, there must be something more” mean that there must be something more and that more is God? Ohhh you keep us guessing, but that’s what we love at the SALACBHOF. 5. A United Kingdom Accent. Chris Martin is from England. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we at the induction committee associate all British/Scottish/Irish accents with CS Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. That alone bumps your chances of getting into the SALACBHOF by about 22%. You literally sound Christian to us. Based on those criteria, Coldplay is a shoe in this year for induction. Then again, you might have a different band in mind. Some other band that deserves to be inducted in the Sounds almost like a Christian Band hall of fame. Who do you think should be nominated? http://stufffchristianslike.blogspot.com/2008/10/427-inducting-coldplay-into-sounds.html

  16. Feeder tour bus destroyed by fire The tour crew of rock band Feeder had a lucky escape when the bus they were travelling in exploded minutes after they had evacuated it. The 13 men were being driven from a gig in Glasgow to the next venue in Lincoln early on Saturday morning when their driver noticed a problem with the bus. Manager Matt Page said that, shortly after the men were evacuated, there was "a fireball" which destroyed the bus. Band members were safely sleeping at a hotel in Lincoln, he added. The incident happened at about 0400 BST on the M62 motorway, near Saddleworth Moor, in Lancashire. 'Miles away' "The driver of the crew bus saw something untoward coming out of the rear of his vehicle, pulled over to check and there was smoke and flames all over the place," said Mr Page. "There were 13 men on board asleep in their bunks - he dug them all out and a few minutes later there was a fireball. "Obviously, all possessions and laptops and all sorts of things all burnt to a cinder." He said the blaze, which led to the temporary closure of a stretch of the motorway, was put out by a fire crew but that the bus was destroyed. "They were very fortunate indeed," he added. Because all their personal possessions were destroyed in the fire, sports shop JD Sports, in Lincoln, had "kitted them all out" with clothes on Saturday. The band were "many miles away" from the incident because they had travelled on a separate bus, Mr Page added. Feeder, formed in 1992 and fronted by lead singer Grant Nicholas, have released six studio albums with five making the UK top 10. Their latest album, Silent Cry, released in June this year, went to number eight in the UK. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7693189.stm
