  10. Mannheim to Lyon. The sound in some of these arenas is incredible. I will never get tired of hearing the crowd spontaneously chanting that ‘Viva’ chorus. The echo and the sheer number of people singing as one, is something else. Amazing. Another thing that’s amazing, is another 982 signatures in Mannheim, the first stop for Oxfam Germany. 982 people lending their voice to Oxfam campaigns. Many thousands more learning from our volunteers, about Oxfam, Coldplay’s support of Oxfam and the ways that they can support campaigns, helping to tackle poverty and injustice. These people have power to make change happen. Imagine if EU leaders heard all those people singing along to ‘Viva La Vida’, and then the same leaders heard the same voices calling for Fair Trade policies or FOR ALL people to have access to clean water, health, education, sanitation. Every person has the power to lend their voice for positive change. Together, we are so much stronger. Today we are in Lyon. The baton is passed back to Oxfam France agir-ici. Their volunteers will again have the chance to be the start of a movement. Today’s venue, the Tony Garnier Hall. This place used to be an abatoire. It is a huge hall. An unusual setting for a Coldplay show. It’s a great use for such a huge space. I am sure the crowd will soon warm it up, when they rush through later today. The set is being tweaked all the time. Every song, light, sound, drape, cue and position, thought through. The band want this show to be truly something to remember. I had some time to look around the old town of this great city. It’s very photogenic, despite a torrential downpour, which left me sheltering under the awning at a patisserie. I really like it here. Tonight will leave me buzzing on the way to Barcelona, i’m sure. So many new places to see. So many fans to reach. The band could play well into the night, and I am sure the crowd would still want encore after encore. If it didn’t come, they would make their own, with another chorus of Viva! http://www.oxfamblogs.org/coldplay/?p=48
  11. A police firearms officer left a gun in the toilets of a coffee shop where it was found by a member of the public, the Metropolitan Police (Met) has said. The firearm was left in the toilets of a branch of Starbucks in Edgware Road in central London last Friday. The female officer concerned has now been removed from operational duties while an investigation is carried out. The pistol was eventually linked to her when police compared its serial number to those logged at a police armoury. A Met Police spokesman said: "A police-issue firearm was left unattended in a central London cafe on 29 August and was found by a member of the public. "The weapon belongs to a Metropolitan Police authorised firearms officer who was on duty at the time." An investigation is being carried out by the force's Directorate of Professional Standards. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7597381.stm
  12. The US rock band whose pyrotechnics sparked a fire that killed 100 people have agreed to pay $1m (£564,000) to survivors and victims' relatives. The settlement offer from 1980s band Great White is the latest stemming from the fire at The Station nightclub in the US state of Rhode Island in 2003. The blaze began when the band's tour manager shot off pyrotechnics at the start of the concert. More than 200 people were also injured in the blaze. One band member, guitarist Ty Longley, was killed in the fire - the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in US history. According to court papers, the band does not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement which requires the approval of the more than 300 people suing, among other conditions. Devastating Great White's insurer is covering the settlement. Though the band members were never charged, tour manager Daniel Biechele pleaded guilty in 2006 to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter and was given parole in March after serving less than half of his four-year prison sentence. The fire started after flammable packaging foam, which had been used as soundproofing, was ignited. The blaze took hold with devastating speed, licking up curtains and foam covering around the stage as many in the crowd mistook the flames for part of the stage show The victims and survivors sued several dozen defendants after the fire, including foam companies, the rock radio station that ran advertisements for the concert, the club owners and the local fire marshal who failed to cite the club for the foam on the walls and ceilings. Besides Biechele, the only other people charged as a result of the fire were the club owners, Michael and Jeffrey Derderian, who pleaded no contest to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter in 2006. Roughly $175m (£99m) has now been offered by dozens of defendants to settle lawsuits over the blaze, although no settlement money has been distributed so far. A US university law professor has been appointed to work out a formula to determine how much money each person should receive. Great White, from Southern California, rose to popularity in the 1980s and scored a Grammy nomination for its best-known song, a cover of Once Bitten, Twice Shy. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7595770.stm
  13. September 4, 2008 - submitted by Sally, United Kingdom Q. Is Chasing Butterflies a Coldplay song? It sounds like it is. The Oracle replies: Ah you mean the music on the advert for CSL. The verse sounds very like Speed Of Sound so I can see why you ask that. It's not a Coldplay song; it's by an artist named Steph. It's soon to be released as a single.

  22. September 3, 2008 - submitted by Erick, El Salvador Q. why the orecle has not answer my two questions about when Coldplay is going to come to el salvador? The Oracle replies: The most asked question is "when are Coldplay coming to my home country?? Anchorman announces tour dates in due course so it's fruitless asking here. I thought it would help save a lot of finger tapping on keyboards the world over if I got back to you on this popular Q. September 3, 2008 - submitted by pia, Argentina Q. Dear oracle, here?s the question: who was the winner of the competition for the signed and dedicated album? please, I want to know if I have to stop waiting for the postman every single day. The Oracle replies: The winner has been notified and the prize sent out. The lucky recipient resides in Croatia so it's safe to take your eye of the letterbox. September 3, 2008 - submitted by Dorian, United States of America Q. I've noticed that the band members wear ear pieces during the shows. What gets played in these ear pieces? What are their purpose? The Oracle replies: They're in-ear monitors and are pretty standard stage gear these days. They allow each band member to have a bespoke mix of what's going on in terms of music, instrumentation and vocal. They don't necessarily replace on stage monitors. September 3, 2008 - submitted by Anita, United States of America Q. Not a question, just something funny. I was watching a replay (actual fight 07/26/08) of the Cotto/Margarito fight last night (08/03/08)and during the 2nd or 3rd round a tissue butterfly came floating down from the rafters right between the fighters. It was funny...a week later and Coldplay still lingers at MGM Grand. Way to go! Y'all are super!!! The Oracle replies: Thanks for that Anita, that was great to read so I don't mind that it wasn't a question!
  23. I posted it so you lovely people can enjoy. I'm going to try to translate it myself, aber ich habe zu viel Deutsch vergessen!! If you'd like to translate it, that would be ace, but don't feel you have to :D
