The Offical Top Gear Thread
Top Gear launches live world tour The presenters of BBC Two show Top Gear have thundered across London's Tower Bridge aboard a tank to launch their new world tour. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were driven in the stretched 434 Armoured Personnel Carrier to launch Top Gear Live. Motoring fans will be able to watch the hosts take on crazy challenges during each 75-minute live show. The presenters begin their tour at Earl's Court in London on 30 October. The show will be part of the MPH Prestige and Performance Motor Show, which will be held in both London and Birmingham's NEC in November. Clarkson said the idea for a live tour was born last year when the presenters were performing in South Africa. "There was a huge demand from all over the world for us to go and perform - this is an opportunity to come and watch us three cocking about," he said. The £20m world tour will visit Dublin, Johannesburg, Sydney, Auckland and Hong Kong in its first year, with 10 shows on each leg. It will then visit Stuttgart, Moscow, and Abu Dhabi the year after. Clarkson and Hammond are confirmed to be fronting all the shows on the tour, with May so far signed up for London and Dublin. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7591702.stm

Ask the Oracle on Coldplay.com (Now in session!)
September 1, 2008 - submitted by Linnea, Sweden Q. At the blog Roadie #42, there is a picture of Chris reading, what is the title of the book? The Oracle replies: Well, Chris said on the radio this weekend that it could have been The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama but it certainly doesn't look like it! There's been a lot of interest over this particular photo as if it's the only book Chris has ever read. There's always a lot of book reading on tour so we can't be sure, though I heard that particular one might be Oscar Wilde. September 1, 2008 - submitted by Yolanda, Mexico Q. Ok is there really something or someone of Coldplay in the song by Nelly Furtado: All Good Things Come To An End? The Oracle replies: This is another collaboration that hit trouble when it came to being released. Chris was heavily involved in the writing, performance and recording of this song. Again a version was leaked onto the internet but his vocals were removed from the official release. September 1, 2008 - submitted by Krine, France Q. During Yellow, in concert, there are big balloons, like in the next tour? (thanks for the show on BBC and thanks you, Oracle). The Oracle replies: The balloons appeared during the last tour and the band don't tend to repeat any effects so you won't be seeing those again. There are other visual delights on this tour but if you loved the big yellow balloons during Yellow, you can see plenty of photos and videos of them online. September 1, 2008 - submitted by mayte, Peru Q. How much you guys know about latin american culture? and why don't you visit machu picchu in Peru? The Oracle replies: Collectively they know quite a bit. Also the Oracle has been to Machu Picchu twice. September 1, 2008 - submitted by Adam, United States of America Q. Is there any place I can obtain the version of song Dry Your Eyes with Chris and the Roots? I have not been able to find it anywhere. The Oracle replies: Chris sang the chorus on the original demo of Dry Your Eyes by The Streets not The Roots. There was an unofficial copy floating around on the internet at the time, which was also played on a U.S radio station. As it hadn't been given the green light it caused controversy when it was revealed that this version was to be ditched and wasn't intended for public delectation. September 1, 2008 - submitted by Ivka, Slovakia Q. What are those coloured streamers on Chris' fingers? (kind of material..?) The Oracle replies: This isn't relevant any longer as Chris only wore the coloured tape (electrical tape) during the Twisted Logic tour. It tied in with the X&Y Baudot code of coloured blocks on the album's cover. September 1, 2008 - submitted by karina, Australia Q. Is it true Coldplay are going to do a duet with Kylie Minogue??? The Oracle replies: This song has already been recorded months ago. It hasn't been played out anywhere yet nor has it been announced officially where you're going to get to hear it. Sit tight and all will be revealed... eventually.

Radio2 Live: Coldplay - 30th August 2008 @ 7pm BST
SET LIST: COLDPLAY CHRIS Martin has finally lopped his curly locks off. It’s a good move – the shaved head makes him look like a rock star again rather than a 1970s Geography teacher. The tunes speak for themselves, and we get some biggies, including an un-tampered Yellow – dedicated to REM for inspiring them – and No 1 Viva La Vida, which makes the mostly bald-headed audience punch the air in glee. The Scientist and Trouble are as lovely and spine-tingling as ever and almost make you forgive Martin for drinking a cup of tea throughout the show. When the gig goes off air the lads come back for a special encore of the countryfied Strawberry Swing, but not before Chris tells us of his newfound love for tattoos. “I’ve had two since reaching my thirties,” he beams. “It’s the biggest buzz ever. I’m married now, you see, and I can’t take drugs ’cos they’ll write about it in the papers.” Maybe there was something in that cuppa after all. http://www.dailystar.co.uk/playlist/view/49394/SET-LIST-Coldplay/

Radio2 Live: Coldplay - 30th August 2008 @ 7pm BST
Roadie #42 - Blog #23 August 31, 2008 7:02 pm #42 reports from last night's BBC show Like the school summer holidays, our three weeks at home went all too fast. In many ways, starting again at the BBC is perfectly consistent with the "back to school" analogy. The BBC has that wonderful institutional feel, a similar must and polish smell and a strict adherence to regulations that is at first mildly annoying, but eventually becomes quite endearing. We're at the BBC Radio Theatre today, in the West End, which I'd guess holds around 250 people. The stage is undoubtedly the smallest space we've tried to fit the gear into on this tour so far. There's a good deal of juggling and repositioning until it all begins to make sense. The soundcheck is a relaxed affair, with Chris dropping into Gravity (as per 24th June 2003 in the Timeline) at the piano for a brief moment. Chances of this making it into the set are well below slim I'd say, as Jonny didn't even recognise it and Chris couldn't remember half the chords. I've always loved that track myself though. Easily the best song they've never released! After the soundcheck, it's a quick run around the BBC buildings to do a couple of radio interviews. It truly is a one stop shop here at the BBC! First up is Dermot O Leary, possibly the most affably chipper man in broadcasting. Dermot goes onstage to warm up the crowd and introduce the band later this evening, so it's a nice way to hook up with him prior to the event. Then it's on to Steve Lamacq. Once described by Mr. Buckland as "like the Yoda of radio", Steve gave the guys their first huge step up on British radio (as per 25th Feb 1999 in the Timeline) with a live session before they even had a proper record deal. There's laughter aplenty, then a rather out of the blue announcement of future plans. Steve has Michael Stipe on the phone for an interview, so the fellas chat with him and talk about plans for an EP, asking him to choose a name for it. It's a multiple choice question, but he's emphatic in his view, so it looks as though he's settled the matter of what the next Coldplay release will be named (no doubt Anchorman will be making that official before very long). There was also time for Will and Jonny to check the football scores... There is really very little point in me describing how the gig went, as it went out live to radio. There was a particularly amusing roadie tale doing the rounds as stage-time approached this evening, though. Apparently, the lampies loaded in and started programming the previous night. Now, when pointing beams of light, it's much easier to see them if there's a bit of "fog". Apparently, Sparky (our lovely lighting man) dutifully checked that there would be no trouble with smoke detectors. After being assured that all was well, he pumped out a rather generous amount, ready to get to work. Somewhat inevitably, the BBC's smoke detectors had a major panic attack. This led to the whole building being evacuated. Apparently the BBC chaps were most apologetic to him and took the heat (probably not the best phrase under the circumstances, I agree...). They assured all concerned that their errant fire alarm system had been recalibrated and that all would be well. The fire chief was less than sure and insisted that before he leave, the smoke machines were fired up again. Needless to say, alarm bells and flashing lights ensued and all and sundry were out on the pavement once again. Apparently, the result of all this fun and games was that Radio 3 and Radio 4 ended up being off air for some time. Now if this man's smoke machine trigger-finger can bring down two national radio stations, empty an entire building and summon half the London Fire Brigade, you really do have to wonder what it was he did that earned him the nickname Sparky... Newsreel: Oxfam volunteers wanted for Euro shows (includes Oxfam Blog from Europe)
I’m on the road again. Bonjour, Nazdar, Hallo, Hello’, Salve, Hola! After a few weeks to get some sleep, rest a bit and catch up on life at home (where I lay my hat..), i’m back out on the road again with Coldplay. The crew room has a strangely orange glow. Light fittings, chairs and floor are all a matching ’Dulux’ tangerine colour. That’s in keeping with the awkward-but-stangly-interesting-tango-tent-like structure that is the Strasbourg Zenith, home of tomorrow night’s show. It sort of looks like a pile of bright orange plates.. Nothing like the sports arenas of North America. This is yet another strange and interesting place I have seen on this Oxfam/Coldplay tour. It feels very clean. Quiet too. No voices, ringing phones, truck engines, bleeping radios, running feet, sweating or busy atmosphere that usually fills these places on show days. Not forgetting the amazing music and live shows of Coldplay and their support acts. Mind you, there are a pile of bath towels on the floor, which suggest the crew who arrived a few days ago for tech rehearsals, have been working up a sweat getting the venue ready and the stage set. Thank you to them. It was another early start this morning. Shower, mango breakfast, lift to the station, train, tube, another tube, then another airport. I stepped out onto the runway to walk towards the plane, and suddently felt what touring feels like. For some reason, the idea of rock stars throughout history stepping out of aircraft onto runways is a resounding image of life on tour. I walked up the 5 small steps into the cosy plane, took my seat, grabbed my cheese sandwich and looked out at the old-fashioned looking propellors that would whisk us away for Round 2. We flew out over a rain-drenched London, patchwork fields, the English channel and over into France. The airport was fittingly quiet for a Sunday afternoon. I went to the toilet only to come back and see the crew walking out of the hall, and my bag the only one left drifting around on the console (cue mild panic and silly run). Then we headed out (on the other side of the road) in the direction of the aforementioned ’stack of plates’ Zenith.. I’m excited about meeting Amelia from Oxfam France -agir ici with her group of volunteers tomorrow night. I hope that Europe will match the success Oxfam had around North America. I had better go and find the Oxfam hamper, and start setting up. I just wanted to say ‘Hi’ (in a few different languages). Get the ball rolling again. Coldplay will be rolling into town soon, and we need to be ready. Is that a radio I hear in the distance?? p.s. Here’s a peep inside the crew room (my ‘office’ at the moment). Please excuse silly looking blogger. http://www.oxfamblogs.org/coldplay/?p=44
