actually fish don't all float when they die. Some float for a while, but they don't float for very long. There are plenty of fish who end up on the bottom of lakes and certainly the ocean where they decompose. And a lot of fish die on dry land, sand or mud. And I think a lot of the fossilized animals died in mud which became harder over time to form a rock. Carbon dating supposedly is to measure the amount of carbon in a lifeform and in the surrounding rock or dirt or whatever. The carbon doesn't disappear after 100,000 years. I don't really know how they do it, but I know it doesn't just disappear. There are many theories about different eras for dinosaurs as to why they became extinct all at once. A couple of them involve dust clouds covering the earth as you have talked about. The dust mainly killed animals by blocking out the necessary sun for them to live and somehow scientists think this killed a lot of animals while others somehow survived. Those events could have been triggered either by giant asteroids or by volcanic eruptions.
