Coldplay - I can 'Fix You'...
Now before you go and cut off my genitals, let me make this clear. I do not mean this as in "I hate Coldplay and here's what's fucked up about them." On the contrary, I am a huge Coldplay fan, own their three full EPs and the Live CD/DVD, have travelled 11 hours to see them...etc. etc. etc. However, no band is without it's flaws, and it's bands that look at their own weak spots and improve them that really stand the test of time. Anyways, that being said, I believe this thread should be here to discuss what Coldplay could do to be better as a band, both musically and as performers overall. The first thing I see with them is that they are caught in two minds. They want to simultaneously be U2 and Radiohead, which is impossible. On one hand they want to be the biggest band in the world with simplistic, lovely music that speaks to people, while they also want to be Radiohead, one of the biggest bands there are, which is a more complex, intriquite (sp) style of music. It's fine to have a major influence on an album, but it's not good when you have two conflicting influences. Parachutes was a fabulous album, definate shades of Radiohead while also showing the band could produce things that Radiohead never would (Yellow, Don't Panic) shine. Same for AROBTTH. Amazing album. Less of a Radiohead influence and more U2, still one of my favourite albums to date. Probably always will be. They had huge success with songs that mirror the U2 kind of sound, the simplistic riff in 'In My Place' etc., while also producing very different music, songs like Clocks that will be memorable for some time to come. However, with X&Y, they seem to be caught in two minds, on whether they want to keep it simple and anthemic like U2 or go for more musical risks like Radiohead. This lead to an album that shone brilliantly in spots and was quite dull in others. Imagine if they'd kept the class of Fix You, Square One or 'Till Kingdom Come throughout the whole album. It would've been another masterpiece. Coldplay need to go one way or the other, or a completely different way completely, but not trying to go both, it wouldn't work for the best of bands. Anyways, another problem with them is their live shows. No, I'm not saying they sound bad. They are amazing, their sound is perfect, it's just a little bit repeating. When you go to a U2 show, you never know what's going to be on the setlist. Will they reach back, play 'Bad' or 'With Or Without You', will you get to hear the pounding drums of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' or the beautiful 'Kite?' Same goes for a Radiohead performance, will they bust out old songs, like 'Anyone Can Play The Guitar' or the gritty 'Black Star.' There's an element of suprise, it makes every show that much more special, they got a setlist that nobody else, or just a few other shows got. I love Coldplay shows, but I would wish they'd incorporate more diversity. It looks like they are on this second leg of the Twisted Logic Tour, the inclusion of Dylan and Embrace, while adding old favourites like 'Trouble' and 'Shiver.' When I travel to a concert, I'd love for there to be an element of suprise. Especially older material. I'd love there to be a chance for Trouble, Shiver, Spies, We Never Change etc. from Parachutes, a Warning Sign or Amsterdam from AROBTTH etc. You get the picture. Coldplay have the potential to be the next U2. But if they are not careful, they could be overtaken by bands like Sigur Ros or Arcade Fire, or a resurgent Radiohead. All bands have problems to address, I'm just discussing this here. Please don't turn this thread into a stupid "u r wrong i <3 jonny" thread, please actually take some time and look into it and enter your own opinions.

Acoustic vs. Electric
You can watch an acoustic version of Don't Panic on Launch (music.yahoo.com) that features a lovely bit of harmonica work from Mr. Buckland.

Just Got Home From The Greatest Show EVER!!
it was forgotten during the acoustic set, as they were getting ready, Chris looked at this really buff shirtless guy at the front and said "Holy shit! That guy's got huge muscles!" and smiled and laughed. :)

Why not What If?
:) I wondered if anyone knew why Coldplay doesn't perform "What If" more often at live concerts? It's one of my favourite tracks off the new album, so I've been hoping to see it live a lot, but I never see it on any track lists, it seems they don't perform it live. I heard somewhere that they played it and Martin called it the "best fuc*ing thing i've ever written" so I don't know why they don't perform it more often at live venues. Anyone know the reasoning behind this?

Your Coldplay Video Ideas
From the topic "My video for 'Talk' " and other posts in that thread (thumbs up, by the way, participants in that thread) I became curious of what kinds of thoughts people had in their heads for Coldplay videos of all sorts. Whether a video for a song that never got one, or a revampment for a song that already got a vid, I'm curious to see what you think. I personally think that the video for 'Yellow,' while nice and simple, also ended up being a bit...I don't know, boring? Soz Chris and Co., but it's such an amazing song, I wish more had been done with it. Other than that, I've been really pleased. I particularly liked "Trouble" in that it's a bit diffo from the other Coldplay vids out. I would have liked to have seen videos for "Don't Panic" and "Spies" off of Parachutes, "Warning Sign" from AROBTTH, and "What If" of X&Y. I'll do some thought and think of what would work out well for these songs. TBH, it'd be a bit hard to do "Don't Panic" without it coming off very cheesy, given the outrageously optimistic lyrics. As to "Spies" it's just such a cool song, it'd be neat to see another concept/graphics sort of video, kinda like "Trouble" only darker, as it's a sort of dark song when it comes down to it. "Warning Sign" would be difficult to produce a video for, it might be neat to see a bit of a mix between performance and storyline. I'd like to see the boys work some women into their videos every now and then, I think they could do it on this song. Finally, with "What If" it's less of wanting to see a video for this song, more of just wanting to get such an amazing song out to the public. They deserve to see what is likely the best Coldplay song, lyrically at least, to date. It would be interesting to see what kind of video they would put out without making people want to put a gun to their heads, in that it'd be that depressing.

it's to high
I think Shiver from Parachutes is one of the best examples of Martin using his excellent vocal range high to get the best balance. He hits good low notes and good high notes, really makes me enjoy the song more. By the way, personally it's not a big deal if I can sing along perfectly to the artist's voice - in a way, if I could, I should be singing with a band too, right? ;) I love the "Oooooh's" and "Aaaaaah's" in What If, much like Fix you, it goes from this slower part to a huge grandiose finale. Although it's in reverse, from bass to falsetto in What If with the opposite (sorta) in Fix You.

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
I tried searching to see if there were any topics for this festival, but having not found any immediately, I just figured I might as well start my own thread. This is the biggest music event I will have gone to, as up to now I've only made it to local gigs, and Coldplay haven't come within 200 miles of where I live, so I haven't been able to see them live yet. I'm extremely excited about this event, it's under a month from now that it starts, and it's something I've been anticipating for four or five months. Major dork. ;) Anybody else here making it to this festival? Overall the bill is absolutely amazing, in my eyes only Glastonbury can rival it. The price is right, too. $105 for all of the bands on the bill is ridiculous - I immediately picked out 30 bands that I wanted to see. About $3.50 per show. Not bad! There are still one day tickets, which you can buy three of for a total of $150 (still a steal) and if not you can always go next year - although Coldplay might not be back. This gig doesn't get a lot of coverage, so I didn't know if anyone else here was going to make it.

I am me!
My name's Isaac. I live in America. I am actually a more recent Coldplay fan, I got "AROBTTH" sometime in '04 because I was a big fan of "Yellow." To my suprise, "Yellow" wasn't on it, but I still had it so I just kept it there. Over time, it always ended up being the album I'd put on, whether on iTunes or the iPod, so over time I became curious, and also got "Parachutes." I was thoroughly impressed, and my interest grew in the band. I kept listening and looking for more material, then I heard the news about the new album coming out, and was excited. I got "Speed of Sound" and enjoyed it a lot, hoping this sound, much like Clocks, would be constant on the new album. The new album impressed me, a 4 star (out of 5) kind of release. I was hoping for a "Joshua Tree," but I still wasn't dissapointed, as it's so difficult to produce music. "What If" is my favourite from the new album, that Lennon-esque "anti-anthem" really strikes a chord for me. I like "Fix You" too, as I'm a big guitar chord, and it really shows how far the band has come, in that building sort of song, eventually crescendoing in that passionate chorus. One of the few songs that actually makes me cry sometimes. I haven't seen Coldplay live yet, but I will be able to catch them when they perform in Austin in the Austin City Limits festival 2005, something I'm excited about beyond belief. It'll be my first real music festival, and it's only a month from today. It should be mind blowing, it has such a phenomenal ticket. I play football (soccer) for fun, and enjoy banging on the guitar, which I've done for about three months. As of now, I'm working on "In My Place" and "The Scientist." :)

4th Coldplay Album "Fast, Dark And Heavy"
You guys don't read into anything correctly. First off, he didn't say heavier as in hard-rock, he explicitly says "not like Metallica." He just means a more powerful sound, as in bigger. You people show too little musical knowledge, and too little appreciation for change. Listen to "October" or "Boy" by U2, then listen to "The Joshua Tree" then "Achtung Baby." The latter two are far and away absolutely brilliant albums, much better than the original two. Thing is, they are much different, yet simultaneously both very-U2-ish. The best bands have to reinvent themselves. U2 weren't capable of producing songs like "One" or "With Or Without You" in their early stages, but with time their sound changed and they became a better band. This holds just as true in the case of Radiohead. On 'OK Computer,' taking a massive turn, they produced something so much different yet simultaneously so much more brilliant than anything they'd done before. But they took a risk. They could've still done well if they hadn't changed, but in their change, they really made something that rivals any album ever produced. Embrace change, maybe Coldplay can produce a "Joshua Tree" or "OK Computer" (which X&Y isn't)
