Most people dont see why we like them, but maybe as you said is because they have suffered. Opposite to other bands that write sad songs or happy songs or whatever, but that is thanks to a feeling not an actual experience. Not that I prefer one or the other, but it feels way more personal when you KNOW the person has gone through whatever they are expressing in their music :nice:
