This is what my French teacher said. Or what I remember of it anyway. St. Valentine was friends with this girl, like she was his daughter almost. I think he got thrown in jail and... jeez... he ended up dying, but to express his love he basically made her his Valentine. Of course the term Valentine wasn't used til later, but yeah. A Valentine is anyone you love, not just a boyfriend/girlfriend.
