The basis I work on is that. Like you said if they went back in time to detonate the bomb that would in turn mean they never went to the island than they never went to the island and in turn could never detonate the bomb, so basically a new alternate universe is created. That universe is the one in which the bomb was detonated, this is why they are sent back to their original time period and universe after the bomb has exploded, they succeed but they don't see the effects, their other selves do.
